What is an animatic?

And how can I make one?

Part 3

Page 2: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• We are back to iMovie again today.• Just like yesterday, we will need to click Later on this dialogue box.

Page 3: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• Chances are that another student has also been using this laptop to work on his or her animatic.

• Go into the Project Library and select YOUR PROJECT.

Page 4: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• You can see that I retimed all my pictures. My film, so far, is a whopping 39 seconds!

• I have also turned off the Ken Burns Effect, and put one of the film effects (negative) on the close-up in the fifth slide.

Page 5: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• There are some features in iMovie about which you should know.• The first is the Microphone Icon. By clicking it, I can use either the

laptop’s microphone or an external microphone to insert dialogue.

Page 6: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• I want my news reporter to report the news. I click the mircrophone and I get the message: “To record, click a clip where you want the voiceover to begin.”

• So I clicked the last clip.

Page 7: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• I selected where I wanted the spoken text to go.• It gave me a 3 second warning, and I was expected to

speak!• It is helpful if you have a script in front of you.• You will probably do this step many times, since the

dialogue may be longer or shorter than the time you have allotted for the clip.

Page 8: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• The dialogue is shown by small purple tabs underneath of the visual clip.

• If you have headphones, you will want to plug them into the laptop.

• You will want to select the clip, move the playhead to its beginning and press the space bar (play).

• So, to review, there’s a lot to be done before moving on:• Your dialogue has to be scripted.• It has to be recorded.• The run time of the clip has to coincide with the time it takes to speak

the dialogue.

• Film making is painstaking and sometimes tedious. Take your time with this process and get it right.

• There are at least two other types of sound you need to consider:• Sound effects.• Music.

Page 11: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• iMovie comes with a Sound Effects Library preloaded.• Mr. Klein also put a sound effects library up on ProfessorKlein.com

Page 12: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• You have already created a folder for your pictures. • Within that folder, create another one, entitled Sound Effects.

Page 13: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• When you click on the sounds, they will play.• They will also tell you how much time they play for!• Make sure you take good notes.• Each of these titles is a folder. There are several sounds within

each folder.

Page 14: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• My movie is about a woman going through some stress in the middle of an alien invasion.

• I am checking out the Sci Fi sounds.

Page 15: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• My space gun sound didn’t take but a second.

Page 16: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• I am going to need that sound, so I right click on the blue bar.• I select Save As.

Page 17: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• I save the sound into the folder I created within MYANIMATIC folder for the .wav files (sound effects).

Page 18: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• I want to show that there are aliens shooting it out as she runs for cover in the building. I drag and drop the alien gun sound right onto the clip.

Page 19: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• You can see the three Ray Gun Shots as indicated by the green tabs.

Page 20: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• There are also plenty of sounds in the iMovie Sound Effects Library.• You can access it by clicking the musical note and selecting iLife

Sound Effects.

Page 21: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• All you have to do is drag and drop the sounds from the iLife Library you want.

Page 22: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• You can adjust its position by grabbing the green bar and moving it to the desired location.

Page 23: What is an animatic? And how can I make one? Part 3

• Tomorrow we will talk about Garage Band and iTunes.• You should begin to think about where you want this project to go. • Is this something that you’re only going to show Aunt Bess, mom,

dad, and Spock-the-Laborador Retriever? • Or are you going to use this in your college admission portfolio, on

YouTube, and as a pitch for a pilot?• How you answer influences the type of music you choose for this

project….
