What is cloud computing? The term "cloud" is analogical to "Internet". The term"Cloud Computing" is based on cloud drawings used inthe past to represent telephone networks and later todepict Internet.

Cloud computing is Internet based computing where virtualshared servers provide software, infrastructure, platform, devices and other resources and hosting to customers ona pay-as-you-use basis. All information that a digitizedsystem has to offer is provided as a service in the cloudcomputing model. Users can access these services availableon the "Internet cloud" without having any previous know-how on managing the resources involved. Thus, users canconcentrate more on their core business processes ratherthan spending time and gaining knowledge on resourcesneeded to manage their business processes.

Cloud computing customers do not own the physicalinfrastructure; rather they rent the usage from a third-party provider. This helps them to avoid huge capitalinvestments. They consume resources as a service andpay only for resources that they use. Most cloud computinginfrastructures consist of services delivered through sharedresources. This increases efficiency as servers are notunnecessarily left idle, which can reduce costs significantlywhile increasing the speed of application development.

Cloud ArchitectureCloud computing architecture consists of twocomponents "the front end" and "the back end".The front end of the cloud computing systemcomprises the client's device (or it may becomputer network) and some applications areneeded for accessing the cloud computing system.Back end refers to the cloud itself which mayencompass various computer machines, datastorage systems and servers. Group of these cloudsmake a whole cloud computing system. The wholesystem is administered via a central server that isalso used for monitoring clientís demand andtraffic ensuring smooth functioning of the system.A special type of software called "Middleware" isused to allow computers that are connected onthe network to communicate with each other.Cloud computing systems also must have a copyof all its clientsí data to restore the service whichmay arise due to a device breakdown. Makingcopy of data is called redundancy and cloudcomputing service providers provide dataredundancy.

Deployment Models

There are four different deployment models of cloud computing:

Public Cloud: Public or external cloud is traditional cloudcomputing where resources are dynamically provisioned on afine-grained, self-service basis over the Internet or VPN and orfrom an off-site third-party provider who bills on a fine-grainedbasis

Community Cloud: If several organizations have similarrequirements and seek to share infrastructure to realize thebenefits of cloud computing, then a community cloud can beestablished. This is a more expensive option as compared topublic cloud as the costs are spread over fewer users as comparedto a public cloud. However, this option may offer a higher levelof privacy, security and/or policy compliance.

Hybrid Cloud: Hybrid Cloud means either two separate cloudsjoined together (public, private, internal or external) or acombination of virtualized cloud server instances used togetherwith real physical hardware. The most correct definition of theterm "Hybrid Cloud" is probably the use of physical hardwareand virtualized cloud server instances together to provide asingle common service. Two clouds that have been joinedtogether are more correctly called a "combined cloud".

Private Clouds: Private clouds describe offerings that deploycloud computing on private networks. It consists of applicationsor virtual machines in a company's own set of hosts. Theyprovide the benefits of utility computing -shared hardwarecosts, the ability to recover from failure, and the ability to scaleup or down depending upon demand.

Benefits Of Cloud ComputingThe benefits of cloud computing for an enterpriseinclude:

* Reduction in upfront capital expenditure onhardware & software deployment. Consumptionis usually billed on a utility (like phone bills) orsubscription (like magazines) model. Users canterminate the contract at any time & are oftencovered by Service Level Agreements (SLAs)with financial penalties. This reduces risk anduncertainty and ensures ROI.

* Location independence, so long as there isaccess to the Internet

* Increased flexibility and market agility - quickdeployment model of cloud computing increasesthe ability to re-provision rapidly as required

* Allows enterprise to focus on its core business

* Increased compet i t ive advantage

* Increased security at a much lesser cost ascompared to traditional standalone applicationsdue to centralization of data & increasedsecurity-focused resources

* Easy to maintain as they don't have to beinstalled on each user's computer

Cloud Computing Market Size

According to a study conducted by Forbes, the globalmarket for enterprise cloud-based services will growfrom $12.1 billion in 2010 to $35.6 billion in 2015.The year-on-year growth rate will be 43% in 2011,but will decrease to 13% over the next five years.Software-as-a-service (SaaS) will account for 70%of revenue in 2010, while 30% will be related toinfrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). Another reportby IDC states worldwide revenue from public ITcloud services exceeded $16 billion in 2009 and isforecasted to reach $55.5 billion in 2014,representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR)of 27.4 percent.

Worldwide spending on public cloud services willgrow at 19.4% Compound Annual Growth Rate(CAGR) from nearly $70 billion in 2015 to more than$141 billion in 2019. Worldwide Public IT CloudService Revenue in 2018 is predicted to be $127B.SaaS and PaaS portion of cloud hardware andinfrastructure software spending are projected toreach $55 billion in 2026.
