What is Energy? • Energy is the ability to do work. There are different types of energy forms that are either potential or kinetic energy.
Potential Energy:• Potential Energy comes in forms that are stored.
ie. Chemical & Mechanical EnergyKinetic Energy:• Kinetic Energy forms are doing work.
ie. Electrical, Heat, Light and Sound Energy.
What are some different forms of Energy?
• Mechanical Energy- is the sum of both kinetic and potential energy.I.e. running, lifting weights, pushing a car e.t.c
• Light Energy- is a form of energy that travels in waves.
I.e. lit candle, light bulb, the sun e.t.c
• Sound Energy- is created when a wavelength travels through solid, liquid or gas and creates various frequencies.
I.e. beating a drum, playing a flute, e.t.c
• Heat Energy- is the flow of energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
I.e. heater, sun rays, fire e.t.c
Heat Transfer
Radiation Convection Conduction
Heat energy emitted from the sun.
Heat emitted from a light bulb.
Ice-cream melting on a hot day.
Ice melting in hot liquids.
The handle of a spoon heating up when placed inside hot soup.
Getting burned from touching a hot stove.
How are shadows created?• A shadow is created when light is blocked by an object. If an object is opaque or translucent, light is unable to pass through and a shadow is created.
Why is the size of your shadow affected by a lights distance?• The closer an object is to light, the taller the shadow, and the further away an object is to light, the shorter the shadow.
The length of my shadow throughout the day.

Height of Shadow
This graph shows the shadow of a student who measures 48 inches in height throughout the day.
Does Light Have Color?
White light is made of color. It is made up of a mixture of the seven colors of the rainbow.
A prism can separate white light into a group of colors called the spectrum.
WHAT MAKES A RAINBOW• A rainbow is an arched light that is separated into bands
of color stripes. It appears when the sun’s rays are bent and reflected by drops of rain.
• Immediately after a rain shower, thousands of water droplets are left floating in the air. As sunlight passes through these spherical droplets, light is bent and scattered into a continuous band of colors.
• This light is reflected off the back of the raindrop and refracted again as it leaves the drop.
• The light coming from several of the raindrops creates a rainbow.
Does color matter?
• Have you ever thought about why people wear dark colors in winter and light colors in the summer?
• Dark colors absorb light. Absorbing light makes dark colors warmer.
• Light colors reflect light so they are cooler.
