WHAT IS FAMILY?

• The word family can mean

many different things

depending on who you

talk to.

• Group of people who share

common ancestry

• People related by birth,

marriage, adoption, etc.

• Individuals who are close with

one-another and share

common values

• Friends

• Children in foster care

TYPES OF FAMILIES

• Nuclear Family – consists of two generations• Parents and children

• Extended Family (Multigenerational) –includes relatives other than parents• Grandparents, cousins,

aunts/uncles, etc.

• Single-Parent Family –headed by one parent• Typically through divorce,

death, or someone who was never married

• Step-Family – when at least

one spouse has children from

a previous relationship

• Non-biological parents =

stepparents

• Non-biological children =

stepchildren

• Blended Family – a form of a

stepfamily where both

spouses have children from

previous relationships

• Childless Couple – composed of a married couple

with nor children

• Communal Family – a group of people sharing a

common concern (religious, political) for each

other and living together

• Single Family – a person living alone who is

unmarried

under certain conditions

• Adoptive Family – family

including a child who is

adopted into a family

legally

• Cooperative Family – two

single parent families living

together

same sex who may or may not

have children

• Trans-Racial Adoptive Family –

an adopted child who

identifies with a different racial

group than the adoptive

parents

• Bi-Racial or Interracial Family –

parents that identify with

different racial groups
