What is it?

One Definition:

“The flipped classroom is an environment where students can take learning onto a whole new level. Teachers can now utilize their classroom time for students to complete projects and other activities that develop within them a deeper understanding of the concepts being taught and really addresses different learning styles. Students learn through hands-on and conversations not only with their peers but also with their teacher.”

Why should I care?

• Flipping the classroom allows the teacher more time to really delve into activities with deeper thinking.

• Allows students time to develop a better understanding and an environment built for them to seek help.

• Allows more “real-world” experiences.

• It’s more interesting and more fun!

How is it Different?

• Teacher teaches lesson in class

• Students take notes.

• Students receive some guided practice in class.

• Students go home and complete problems independently for homework

• Teacher provides a lesson at home

• Students come to class ready to apply, discuss, and make connections with the content.

• Students receive support, help, and clarification from the teacher as needed.

• Being absent (sick, extra-curriculars) and missing content – can access anywhere, anytime

• Lesson being taught too fast to comprehend

• Getting stuck on homework problems with no support

• Being bored because content is too easy

• Forgetting old material and having no way to re-access it

• Being an active, responsible learner

• Working and collaborating with classmates to deepen understanding

• Being in charge of their learning and their success in the class.

• Working with concepts they need more support in understanding

• Managing their time to meet given learning objectives

Don’t struggle with… Can focus on…

Sounds pretty hard.• It’s not about redoing all your hard work – baby steps.

• Focus on something easy, something you are familiar with.

• Video tools are everywhere – just be yourself and have fun.

• Be sure to shorten lessons to under ten minutes if using video.

• Only need to focus on what’s important – cover one objective at a time.

• Be sure to keep students engaged and accountable with google forms, quizzes, etc.

With everything always changing, what made me “buy in”?

My Classroom Needs Were Changing
