Basically, a passive EQ applies amplification after the circuits that
attenuate and boost frequencies, rather than in the feedback loop of the
circuit itself.
With an active EQ, you can target specific frequencies with adjustable
bandwidth equalization, making it easy to surgically alter your sounds.

The other cool thing about passive EQ is adding gain. If you push the
upper limits of the gain on a passive EQ, you
can get some really cool saturation. Cranking the gain on the EQ
made a massive, thick sound for the vocals.

The most famous passive EQ is the Pultec, an item so expensive that
most people pay just to look at them. What makes the Pultec and it’s ilk,
passive EQs, so desirable is their transparency.
Currently, I’m using the Sonimus SonEQ on just about every track. It’s a
free plug-in emulation of classic, passive EQs and it just sounds sweet
and natural anywhere you put it.
