What is the SIMD?
• The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation identifies small area concentrations of multiple deprivation across all of Scotland
• Relative measure ranking the 6,505 datazones in Scotland from 1 being most deprived to 6,505 being the least deprived
What should a Housing Domain measure?
• suitability of housing ?
• inadequacy of housing ?
• physical housing condition ?
SIMD 2004, 2006 and 2009 Housing Domain
• Persons in households without central heating (2001 Census)
• Persons in households that are overcrowded (2001 Census)
Housing domain low weighting – only 2% in 2009
Requirements of data sources• A significant count within each data zone
(ruling out most survey data e.g. SHCS)• A figure for each data zone which can be
ranked 1 to 6,505 e.g. DZ ranked 1 has the highest percentage of ‘bad’ housing
• This ranking accurately reflects the standard of housing in each data zone i.e. those in DZ1 are actually the most ‘housing deprived’
