What is World Green Building Week? Taking place from 23-29 September 2019, World Green Building Week (WGBW) is a global awareness campaign to promote and educate how green buildings are part of the climate solution and can help us build a better future.

Now in its tenth year, the campaign is led by the World Green Building Council and our 70 national Green Building Councils and their 37,000 members and WorldGBC partners.

In 2018 World Green Building Week reached over 151 million people worldwide through social media, press coverage and events

Buildings and construction are responsible for 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions.

We need a world of green buildings. A ‘green’ building is a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts, and can create positive impacts, on our climate and natural environment. Green buildings preserve precious natural resources and improve our quality of life.

What’s the problem with buildings?

WGBW 2019 theme: Building LifeThis year’s campaign aims to raise greater awareness of the carbon emissions from all stages of a building’s lifecycle, and therefore encourage new practices and new ways of thinking to work towards reducing carbon emissions from buildings.

Of the 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions that buildings and construction account for, 28% of these emissions come from the operational "in-use" phase – to heat, cool and power buildings. Meanwhile, 11% of these emissions are attributed to embodied carbon emissions, which refers to carbon that is released during the “before-use” phase in the construction process and material manufacturing.

To date, the building and construction industry’s focus has been on operational emissions and how buildings actually perform in-use.

However, in order to fully decarbonise by 2050 to keep global warming to below 1.5 degrees, the building and construction sector must also tackle embodied emissions from the entire building lifecycle. Join your local Green Building Council and help us build a better future!

In 2018, the campaign Ambassador for the MENA region was his Excellency Nayef H Al-fayez, the Minister of the Environment Jordan who recorded a video talking about his support for the green building movement.The campaign ambassador for the Europe region was Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment Maritime Affairs & Fisheries who provided a quote for a social media card.

WorldGBC’s embodied carbon reportOn Monday 23 September WorldGBC will publish a report, Bringing embodied carbon upfront - Coordinated action for the building and construction sector to tackle embodied carbon.

The report focuses on addressing embodied carbon emissions, and outlines the systemic changes needed to achieve full decarbonisation across the global buildings sector.
