Characterisitics
of Living Things!
What makes something living and nonliving?
Characteristics of Living Things Notes (002).notebook January 13, 2017
All living things no matter how different from each other they may be share a set of common
characteristics.
Characteristics of Living Things Notes (002).notebook January 13, 2017
All Living organisms have the same 5 characteristics and 3 needs.
This helps scientists classify things as living or nonliving.
Does it eat? Does it grow?
Does it move?
Does it interact?
Does it
reproduce?

1. Characteristics of Living Things
• Living things are organized and made of cells
– cells: smallest unit of living matter
> can be singlecelled (1 very simple and selfsufficient cell)
> can be multicelled (many different cells have different functions)
– example: blood cells, brain cells, skin cells, muscle cells, etc.

2. Characteristics of Living Things
• Living things respond to stimuli
> Stimulus: any change in an organism's surroundings that will cause the organism to react.
– Ex: change in light, background, temperature, space, water, food, or other organism
> Response: an organism's reaction to stimulus.
– Ex: running away, color change, hiding in shell, growing thicker fur
Stimulus comes first and response comes second

What's the stimulus and what is the response?

3. Characteristics of Living Things
• Living things obtain and use energy
> Energy comes from food, oxygen, and water
> Helps living things grow and develop
– Autotrophs: (plants) make their own food
– Heterotrops: (animals) get food from other plants and animals
« Respiration: process where energy is released from food in most organisms

4. Characteristics of Living Things
• Living things grow and develop
> Growth: process where organism becomes larger
– Ex: Getting taller
> Development: organisms become more complex
– Ex: Getting smarter
**Organism must have energy to grow and develop

5. Characteristics of Living Things • Living things reproduce
> Reproduce: make offspring that have similar characteristics as the parents.
• 2 types: Sexual vs. Asexual
• Sexual: 2 parents (sperm and egg) combination of both parents traits
• Asexual: 1 parent identical offspring to parent

WHAT DO LIVING THINGS NEED?
1. Shelter
2. Water
3. Food

Scientists have categorized all living things into 5 kingdoms based on these characteristics.
Plants
Animals
Fungi
Protists 1 cell Bacteria/Monera 1 cell

Is it a living organism?
1. Is it made of cells?
2. Does it respond to stimuli?
4. Does it grow and develop?
5. Does it reproduce?
3. Does it use energy?
