This June, Guelph Dance celebrates its 21st Festival! Over the last 20

years, we have worked with arts groups, community organizations and countless individuals in order to bring to Guelph the very best contemporary dance performances as well as meaningful arts education and community engagement opportunities.

Our community, as any other, is ever changing and evolving; therefore, staying connected with all our partners, audiences and participants is crucial when programming. The Guelph of 20 years ago was quite different from the Guelph of 2019. We never stop having conversations, developing partnerships, implementing new ideas and occasionally leaving behind programs that no longer resonate with the community. Being connected to our community has informed this year’s programming in many ways: really thinking about the ways in which we engage with people of different abilities, providing

Two queens from a different time go on an absurd camping trip, far away from court. Without servants, they will have to use their creativity to survive in the wild. Their castle is reduced to basic tents, royal dances have to be executed on grass, one needs to fish for lunch and cope with the unpredictable whims of mother nature… A charming and interactive adventure for all ages.

This piece began with the offering to be a jingle dress dancer and evolved into the creation of a contemporary healing dance, allowing gifts and ancestral experiences to guide the choreographer in it creation and manifestation. In this signature solo, the dancer-choreographer travels with us through dimensional realms of existence — spirit, dream and present — performing a journey of her life.

Hypnos stimulates the experience of collective hypnosis on the live music of Charles Bicari. Paradoxically to the view of practice as a lethargic state, Hypnos proposes a group of individuals full of energy and enthusiasm reacting to constraints through movement and music. Through their journeys, the dancers are connecting with each other on a psychic and physical aspects. Through that link that keeps strengthening during the whole piece, they let go of their doubts in order to fully benefit from the experience.

There she was is a solo performance, choreographed by Jane-Alison McKinney. The piece is defined by two visual chapters: an androgynous, grounded, and embodied figure contrasted with an exaggerated, feminine, towering monster. It’s a reflection on chaos and escape, carried by a charged physicality with strength at its core. McKinney’s performance is driven by risk, rigour, and heart: “If the impossibility of dancing in six-inch stilettos doesn’t grab you, her closing words will.” (The Buzz Mag)

disparu explores the complicated emotions that accompany the disentangling of human relationships without explanation. The dancers find new ways of parting through various forms of disconnecting, resembling both the social media concept “ghosting” and the harsh reality of death. By delving into the idea of someone unexpectedly vanishing from your life, the dancers embark on a journey of memory and acceptance.

Eunoia is Christian Bök’s award-winning and bestselling book of conceptual poetry. It is built on the notion of constraining language to one vowel per chapter and tells stories in ways that are as pleasurable as they are ingenious.

Denise Fujiwara’s adaptation of the book is a multimedia experience of dance, video, music and costume that employs similar constraints in such inventive ways that it has resulted in a ground-breaking performance lauded by audiences and critics alike.

EUNOIA takes the audience on a verbal, visual and visceral journey. The concept of the poem is introduced through games and then builds in complexity with fanciful narratives and semiotic play. Initially, the audience grapples with the rich play of words and images, and then, as the performance unfolds, they surrender to the surprises and wit that are revealed through layers of meaning in the moment.

Dasein Dance TORONTOFour Seasons Project 2017–19Choreographer: Lacey Smith

The Four Seasons Project brings together 70 youth age 11–21 in a reimagining of Vivaldi’s masterpiece. Four dance companies and one string ensemble from four cities will come together in a multi-disciplinary production that brings a youthful twist to the celebrated Four Seasons.

Collectively with the youth, we have developed a movement score inspired by the rich imagery Vivaldi brings to life through these timeless concertos. The young musicians are making a first exploration of baroque performance practice, a style of music-making that is deeply informed by dance and gesture. Woven together are the results of this collaboration that unite music, movement and text in a beautiful celebration of nature, youth and the transcendent music of Vivaldi.

CORPUS Dance Projects TORONTOCo-founded by Sylvie Bouchard and artistic director David Danzon, CORPUS is known for its precise and surrealist humour that combines movement with theatrical imagery. Choreogra-pher, Carolin Lindner graduated from Theakademie Berlin with a degree in Theatre Pedagogics. She works for theatre, visual and social arts projects. She has led theatre educational projects for youth and has worked as an artistic director and programmer for interna-tional theatre festivals in Germany, initi-ated an annual European youth camp in Germany and led theatre workshops in schools and retirement homes.

Friday Creeations OTTAWA—TEMAGAMI FIRST NATIONIncorporated in 2018, Friday Creeations is a film and stage production company that blends traditional and contem-porary dance elements, led by award-winning choreographer-performer Christine Friday. Part of the vision for Friday Creeations is the establishment of a community-supported Cultural Creation Centre for artistic learning, creation, and performance in Chris-tine’s home community of Temagami First Nation/Bear Island, and on her family’s traditional land at Friday’s Point. The vision of the Cultural Cre-ation Centre (CCC) is to link artistic creation with land-based activity. The CCC will be connected with an outfit-ters’ company. Artists will be able to immerse themselves in an authentic cultural experience, including options such as guided day canoe trips, hikes, and camping excursions that allow for remote or semi-remote connection with the traditional lands of the Algon-quin Anishnaabe people. Artists and

institutions are seeking a more com-munity engaged relationship and the CCC will provide this connection and inspiration. Programming will include artistic creation, education, residencies, school outreach involving both on- and off-reserve school boards, touring, and performances. Choreographer Christine Friday is a proficient resilient Indigenous storyteller. She began her career with In the Land of Spirits in 1992 and has maintained a professional dance career for over 25 years, choreographing, solo work, commissioned work, youth creations and full scale productions. She is deeply connected to the cultural wellness of her people and works hard to maintain cultural traditions and gifts of her Anishnaabe people. She recently won the 2018 KM Hunter Award for dance through the Ontario Arts Council, this award is given to those who dem-onstrate an original artistic voice while encouraging the artist to propel to the next level. Her intention is to awaken people within themselves, creating a shift change in the world by reflecting reality and the human experience.

Lazylegz MONTREALLuca “Lazylegz” Patuelli born in Mon-treal, raised in Bethesda, Maryland. Graduated with a Bachelor in Business and Major in Marketing at Concordia University. Luca has been dancing from the age of 15. He has created a unique dance style using the strength of his arms and his crutches as an extension of his arms which has garnered him international recognition. Competing and performing in over 30-countries around the world. Luca is the founder of ILL-Abilities™ Crew an international dance crew comprised of differently-abled bboys (breakdancers) recently nominated for an Olivier Award for outstanding achievement in dance.

Luca is also recognized as the Canadian Ambassador for Dance and received a Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada for his dance outreach programs for differ-ently-abled youth. Luca is husband to Melissa Emblin and father to 3-year-old Aura Isabella.

Pauline Berndsen Danse MONTREALPauline Berndsen Danse was created in 2018 by Pauline Gervais. Based in Mon-treal, the company presented its works “Kreatur”, “Hypnos” and “Temps Avenir” at Festival Quartiers Danses ( Montreal), Festival Vue sur la relève ( Montreal) and Festival Plateforme Danse (Bastia). This emerging company presents its own signature of movement, which is characterized by the eclectic marriage of fluidity, articulation and sharpness. Through contemporary dance, Pau-line Berndsen Dance creates journeys through new worlds and atmospheres. As a graduate of Quebec’s École supéri-eure de ballet du Québec, Pauline Ger-vais is a dancer and choreographer from Montreal. She has been dancing with Ballet Ouest de Montréal for many years on the productions « The Nutcracker » and « Ella ». She also starred in multiple videoclips produced by Romeo et Fils , such as Maxyme by Caravane and Iris by J.U.D. She is currently working on a new project with Johanne Madore.

Wild Rabbit Dance Projects TORONTOWild Rabbit Dance Projects is an umbrella that supports the creation and performance of collaborative works under the artistic direction of Jane-Alison McKinney. The works have been presented nationally at platforms such as Chinook Series, The Saint John Contemporary Dance Festival, Summer-works Performance Festival, and Citadel + Compagnie. Wild Rabbit is interested in bold work that makes it possible

to reflect on what is happening in the everyday, while playing with altered time and reality, as a means to generate change. wildrabbitdance.com.

Originally from New Brunswick, Jane-Alison McKinney is a dancer, choreog-rapher, teacher, and artistic director. A graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, she has performed the works of a variety of contemporary dance artists in Canada and Internation-ally. In 2016, she was awarded a Metcalf Foundation Internship Grant in Artistic Direction with adelheid under the men-torship of Heidi Strauss, where she has also worked as a dancer, emerging cho-reographer, and producer. Jane-Alison’s choreography has been supported nationally by a variety of festivals and residencies. She is also co-director of the performance collectives Bare Nerve and Temporary Collective. Upcoming is a tour of her solo work “There she was” in Canada, and a new creation with collaborator Emma Kerson launching at Shawbrook Residency in Ireland in June, 2019.

Rowen McBride-Pilon GUELPH/TORONTOCanadian dancer Rowen McBride-Pilon is a passionate contemporary and ballet trained dancer. At the age of 21, Rowen is completing her second year in the dance program at York University in Toronto, Ontario. She has trained in RAD ballet and various forms of modern technique. From 2012-2017, Rowen performed with the Guelph Youth Dance Company in which she had the opportunity to work with a variety of renowned choreographers. Through the GYDC Rowen performed nationally and internationally, including a China tour in 2016. Upon graduation Rowen hopes to continue to work and train as a per-former, choreographer and teacher.

Catherine Bellefleure and Marie-Maxime Ross MONTREALCatherine Bellefleure and Marie-Maxime Ross met in the first year of their pro-gram at École de danse Contemporaine de Montréal. They danced together in many creations by guest choreogra-phers at their school. They share the same interests and approach of the movement and after the withdrawal of one of the dancers, they decided to work together. From there on they created Foolish Fish for the Breaking Ground Mentorship Program. It’s the first time that they had to create a fifteen minutes piece in view to present it to the Guelph Dance Festival.

Lynette Segal GUELPHHonoured and thrilled to once again create and perform for the Guelph Dance Festival, Lynette Segal continues to explore expression through the artic-ulation and precision of the agile, strong body. Solo improvisation, Contact Improvisation and yoga are instrumental in informing this physical play in her choreographic creations and teaching. This summer Lynette will be a resident dancer at Leviathan, an enchanting studio on rustic Lasqueti Island, BC, working with Benno Voorham and Mark Young.

Fujiwara Dance Inventions TORONTOFujiwara Dance Inventions is a reper-tory dance company devoted to the creation, production, and touring of dance works and concerts. It conducts activities for the professional develop-ment of the Company and the dance community, and promotes an apprecia-tion for the art of dance to the general public. Choreographer Denise Fujiwara began a series of careers starting in childhood as a gymnast. She became a

Canadian Champion in Rhythmic Gym-nastics and competed internationally for Canada. Upon completing an Honours B.F.A. in Dance at York University, she co founded T.I.D.E. (Toronto Independent Dance Enterprise), a now-defunct but still notorious company that danced across Canada for 10 years. Her six solo dance concerts garnered praise and toured to festivals across Canada, and to the U.S.A., South America, Europe and Asia. In 2015 she was a soloist in the Luminato Festival’s Apocalypsis under Lemi Ponifasio. She is a recipient of the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Muriel Sherrin Award for international achievement in dance. She is thrilled that EUNOIA, based on Christian Bök’s masterpiece, a work that delighted and bewildered us over five years of creation, continues its adventure touring the country.

Now a co-directorship shared by Lacey Smith and Miko Sobreira we have expanded our vision and reach, removing ‘The-atre’ from our name to include all of our activities under one identity. Lacey has also been producing full-evening dance pro-ductions since 2007 and is a passionate teacher and mentor for young dancers.

The Young Artists Pre-College Academy LONDON, ONTARIOYAPCA is a diverse collaborative music school led by founding director, Irene Tandberg. Its programming empha-sizes chamber music in a setting that motivates and inspires students to explore a high level of technical finesse and artistry. The school’s collegial, non-competitive environment cre-ates an ideal space for committed and growing players to thrive. Students are engaged in mastering their skills and expanding their musical knowledge through weekly performance, chamber and master classes. Under the tutelage of a dynamic faculty and guest artists, students are exposed to a wide range of concepts in technique and interpre-tation. Likewise, through experiential learning and interaction with like-minded peers, inspiration flourishes. Students meet weekly to perform for each other, igniting discussion, encour-agement, and discovery. YAPCA is actively engaged in collaborative proj-ects both within the local community and beyond. The Carousel Dance Company WATERLOOThe Carousel Dance Company is a children’s dance group, which is affili-ated with the Carousel Dance Centre in Waterloo. There are 100 company members ranging in age from 7 to 18 years. The company maintains an educational focus with an emphasis

on artistic and creative expression and dancers are provided with the opportunity to work with guest and faculty choreographers. Members of the company are also encouraged to engage in the creative process and to choreograph dance works for other company members. The company cre-ates various styles of dance pieces as well as full-length children’s productions and has performed at Arts Festivals, The Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival and numerous other local events. In addition to local performances, the Company has also performed nation-ally and internationally at Dance and the Child International conferences in Taiwan, Holland, Finland, Utah, Denmark and Canada.

The Ryerson School of Performance TORONTORyerson’s four-year BFA Dance Program is the most intensive and comprehen-sive program of its kind in Canada and has earned widespread respect throughout the Canadian and interna-tional dance communities. Our one-of-a-kind, conservatory style environment offers rigorous daily professional training in four dance disciplines (ballet, modern, contemporary and jazz) along-side direct collaboration with visiting guest artists and major arts organiza-tions. This core training is combined with related studies in improvisation, composition, partnering, urban dance styles, music, acting, film and exten-sive creative work. The RHSA Dance Company TORONTOThe RHSA Dance Company is a group of auditioned dancers, from Rosedale Heights School of the Arts. The com-pany has been led by Ms Maryanne Marsh for over 20 years and each year the dancers work throughout the school year on a number of projects and com-positions working with professional cho-reographers and their own RHSA staff. They perform for school outreach tours, Dance Night concerts as well as other performances in the community. Perfor-mances include; Sound Off, The Guelph Dance Festival, TED Talks, Amethyst Awards Gala, YWCA Girl Jam, Riverdale Shares Christmas-Danforth Music Hall, Breakfast Television, The Season of Peace-Metro Hall, Teachers Matter TVO, White Ribbon VOX, Planet Parent, The CODE Conference, The Transforma-

Lina CruzMontreal choreographer Lina Cruz founded her company, Fila 13 Produc-tions, in 2003 and has presented her work in festivals and events at local, national and international levels. Cruz has a background in ballet as much as modern/contemporary styles and takes interest in martial arts and various forms of stage expression. She has created works for independent artists as well as companies, institutions and various schools of professional dance training. Cruz is also often involved in theatre and opera projects. She is a two-time Dora Mavor Moore Award recipient for Outstanding Original Choreography (2012 and 2017) and received a second place award in the 1998 international choreographic competition of the St-Sauveur Arts Festival (Quebec).

Suzette ShermanBorn in Chicago, Suzette trained with Stone-Camryn School of Ballet, and later in New York City. She apprenticed with Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers and performed with Saskatchewan Dance Theatre before joining Toronto Dance Theatre where she toured worldwide for nineteen years. A principal dancer with Dancetheatre David Earle and a teacher throughout her career, Suzette con-tinues to work closely with David Earle, teaching his technique and repertoire. In 2017 she was artist in residence for the Guelph Dance Festival. From the collaboration begun at the Festival, Suzette and Michele Green created Pas-sionate Heart, Women’s Stories through Dance, currently being performed throughout Southern Ontario.
