Australian residential  architectural styles guide

QUEENSLANDER

V A N T A G E P O I N T R O O F I N G

Technically a 'type' and not a 'style' of architecture found in Queensland and

northern New South Wales that was designed with the subtropical climate in

mind. Queenslanders are typically of timber construction, on stumps and can be

low or hight-set. They have one or more verandah spaces and a pitched,

corrugated metal roof. Queenslanders can incorporate many of the following

different styles.

WORKER'S COTTAGE

There's so much history and character in the humble Worker's cottage.

Gabled with typically a square configuration, it shares characteristics with

the traditional Queenslander, such as being made of timber, on

stumps, and often with a verandah.

VICTORIAN

V A N T A G E P O I N T R O O F I N G

Named after the period during which Queen Victoria reigned, Victorian homes

cover a range of styles typically found in Australia’s older areas. They are

characterised by symmetrical layouts, rendered or stucco facades, verandahs or

balastrades made of cast-iron lacework, and corrugated iron roofs. During this

time bullnose verandahs were introduced and often this style was found on

terraced houses.

FEDERATION

V A N T A G E P O I N T R O O F I N G

Federation homes are Australia’s version of the English Edwardian home.

They are freestanding, with gardens, and made of red brick with

asymmetrical, multifaceted roofs (made of terracotta). Characterised by

painted decorative timber features, tall chimneys and fretwork. They often

depicted a Tudor type look and featured Australian motifs such as the Rising

Sun or kangaroos.

CALIFORNIAN BUNGALOW

The Californian Bungalow (yes, from California) are characterised by the

columns holding up the front verandah. They are freestanding and

solid (generally built with brick and to a lesser extent weatherboard) with

a low pitched tiled roof and overhanging eaves. Stone, brick and timber

were used, originally in dark colours.

ART DECO

The Art Deco style is a distinctive one. Characterised by straight

lines, geometric patterns and curves. The style potrayed a heavy and

solid aesthetic, integrating brickwork with elements of wood, chrome

and steel.

POST WAR

V A N T A G E P O I N T R O O F I N G

The post-war era led to a variety of more austere homes such as the

double brick cottage, the fibro home, the waterfall style with curved

brickwork, and in the later years the triple fronted brick home. These

simple styles allowed for standardised construction and developers

quickly set about populating the suburbs with these homes.

MODERNIST

V A N T A G E P O I N T R O O F I N G

Modernist homes stripped back all the decorative elements of

preceding architectural styles. Streamlined and sleek they are often

characterised by skillion roofs, the use of concrete, large glass panels

and open plan living.
