That’s Spring on Our Peninsula.

3

Spring is a great time to get out and enjoy all there is to see and do in and around San Pedro, Los Angeles Harbor and Palos Verdes Peninsula communities, and Catalina Island.

The usual rainy season on the Peninsula brought very little rain. But we’ve had a late season push and there’s still a great chance that it will bring out the beautiful wildflowers to bloom. Experts say there are usually many examples of poppies, Santa Catalina mariposa lily (considered by some to be the most beautiful native flower), California buckwheat, arroyo lupine, California bush sunflower, and a range of other flowers.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy has three preserves that protect and show off plants, flowers, and animals of the area. The Conservancy offers a range of opportunities to get out on nature walks. This month, try the Forrestal Reserve walk on April 14. The third Wednesday offers Bird Walks beginning at 8:30 a.m. and on the third Saturday you can walk with a naturalist beginning at 8:30 a.m. And there are many more events all month and year long.

Terranea Resort, located right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean at the very point of the Palos Verdes Peninsula is a luxury hotel that care about nature. It even grows some of the food for its own kitchens.

The trails along the water are open to the public and there are many opportunities to explore the history and nature of the location.

You can take a nature walk every day that includes the resort’s sea salt conservatory and marine life. Meet in the main lobby.

And that’s Terranea Resort you see on this month’s cover

Head down to the foot of Gaffey Street and you’ll find Pt. Fermin Park. And in that park is the 1874 Pt. Fermin Lighthouse, surrounded by heirloom plants and flowers, carefully tended by volunteers. Drop around any morning and you’ll find the gardeners tending to the plantings. And the lighthouse is open for free tours between 1 and 4 every afternoon.

Experience Spring …

Not far from Pt. Fermin Park—just across Paseo del Mar—is Angels Gate Park, and there you’ll find the Marina Mammal Care Center. The center rescues and rehabilitates pinnipeds, the group of animals that includes seals and sea lions.

This time of year the center is packed with patients and the volunteers are glad to provide details on how the animals are cared for. The objective is to get them well enough to release them back into the natural environment. Sometimes that’s not possible. (For example, one was blind and would not be able to survive in nature, so the center finally found an aquarium that would be able to accommodate him.)

If you’re looking for authentic nature, largely unspoiled, get over to Catalina Island. The Catalina back country tours (get info via the Catalina Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau) are a good choice, especially when time is limited.

Naturalists lead these tours, which are suitable for all ages.

If you have a bit more time, you may want to explore the comfort camping option. It’s perfect for people who don’t like camping.

And there are many other opportunities to get into Catalina Island’s springtime nature, including the very popular Jeep ecotours.

Catalina Island has many opportunities to get out and enjoy a great spring. Get there on Catalina Express, right from San Pedro. www.CatalinaExpress.com

A big feature of the Peninsula is the Pacific Ocean that surrounds it. And if you like to fish, there’s probably no better way to experience it than on the Alexes. It offers overnight trips and 3/4-day trips to Catalina, San Clemente, or Santa Barbara Islands. But you can also get a custom trip and it’s also available for whale watching, harbor cruises, and photo expeditions. Oh, and fish cleaning is included in all the trips.

There are plenty of activities ashore, so it’s a good idea to plan on a few extra days before or after. (And if you’re traveling to join a cruise, planning to arrive a day or more early just makes good sense—you don’t have to worry about travel delays and you can begin your voyage rested.)

For those driving in, the local hotels offer economical park and cruise packages that allow you to leave your car at the hotel for the duration of your cruise and stay a night or more before and/or after your cruise.
