Really Good Idea•Think in terms of accomplishments that all lead you to be the teacher you are today.

Writing Tips• A good way to organize each accomplishment is as follows:• Nature: What is this accomplishment?• Significance: Why is this important to me as a teacher and to my students or families?• Student Impact: How did this impact your students or other teachers’ students?

Please don’t forget!• There are a few things you MUST do: 1. Parent/family communication must be ongoing 2. Professional development must be ongoing 3. Each accomplishment must demonstrate impact on student learning

Reflection•A reflection is not a summary!

So What IS It?• A reflection should address why the body of your accomplishments together have made you a better teacher.• You should reflect basically on the student

impact because of what you learned in the chosen accomplishments.

Documentation

Documentation Hints• Don’t panic!!!• Three basic types: verification forms, artifacts and communication logs• One person can only sign one verification form.• Communication log is not required.• Documentation is not required for every aspect of your accomplishments.

Documentation Hints (cont.)• It is wise to have at least one piece of documentation for each accomplishment.• Follow the directions closely about where to place your documentation in submitting your portfolio.• Do not worry about creating “works of art” for your docs. They should be, however, legible.

four-point scale: 1-4……however……

The scoring scales looks more like….

-1 1 +1; -2 2 +2; -3 3 +3; -4

TO FURTHER ELABORATE… The values of +’s and –’s are .25

points. So….the scores could be: A minimum of .75 (score of 1-) to a maximum of 4.25 (score of 4+) and

anywhere in between those numbers. Thus scores could be:

.75; 1.0; 1.25; 1.75; 2.0; 2.25; 2.75; 3.0; 3.25;

3.75; 4.0; 4.25

PROPOSITIONS

While it is NOT necessary to quote standards language in your write-up, it is important to demonstrate that you have incorporated the National Board philosophy into your teaching regimen.

READ AND RE-READ THE ENTRY‘S GUIDING

QUESTIONS• Each section of each entry has guiding

questions that need to be answered in the body of your writing. It is not necessary to repeat an answer if it satisfies more than one guiding question.

• It is not necessary to answer the questions in order as they are presented. As a master teacher, you may choose how to organize your writing to best highlight your teaching process.

• There are many pathways (styles) to success in National Board certification .

ORGANIZE YOUR “ABSOLUTES”

• After careful consideration of your Standards, Core Propositions, and the entry description, decide how you would like to demonstrate that from your teaching

• Decide what activities you want to include to best highlight your teaching strategies (outline or list)

• Include goals and objectives (for most entries)

Find a trusted friend – not necessarily in your teaching area – and have them read your entry for you. If they don’t understand something, don’t argue – CHANGE IT!

TAKE A SECOND LOOK………..at your Scoring Guide and

Evaluation of Evidence Guide.** Read each part with careful attention to the arrows. If you can’t HONESTLY say that all those items in your entry are clearly stated, GO BACK and REVISE.

AND THEN THERE’S ASSESSMENT CENTER…….

• You must get an appointment to take the assessment center exercises.

• You will take this part at a testing center located at several different sites locally, and if available, you can choose your time and /or place.

• You will have 6 questions in your area of expertise to answer. You will have 30 minutes to answer each question. Each question will likely have more than one part.

• Your CMS National Board facilitator will help guide you through the process before your appointment time.

FOCUS

Your video entry instructions will let you know whether the focus of the entry is students or teacher. Be sure to discuss this with your videographer before the session.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW??

While perfect video is not required, it is crucial for your assessor to be able to hear what you and your students are saying.

Dissect your video to ensure that it demonstrates the goals you have set for your entry.

PERFECTION…..Instead of perfection, look for:Quotes you might use as examples of lesson strategiesExamples of positive use of NB teaching standardsAre your goals and objectives visible in the video?Who is talking most? (Make sure both you and students are visible at some time in the video.)Are your questions higher level thinking questions?

Every teacher has moments when students are not fully engaged. Instead of starting over when you see these in your video, make sure that you acknowledge the situation and how you would rectify like situations in future lessons. This demonstrates that as a master teacher, you know when and how to make spur-of-the-moment corrections.

THE FINISH LINE

The way you present your video and lesson in the written section is critical to your score. It will tell NB assessors whether you are an accomplished teacher.

Tips to save your sanity!

*Learn to say “no.” This is not the year to take on new personal or professional responsibilities unrelated to your pursuit of National Board.

*Ask important people in your life for help. Can someone else do a few loads of laundry or act as chauffeur for your children?

*Plan specific times for relaxation. You will work more effectively and minimize stress.

*Get plenty of rest and consider getting a flu shot.

*Allow for the unexpected.
