Unit 2:5- States of Matter

Prerequisite Vocabulary- Words You Should Already Know

1. hard/harder • not easily penetrated or scratched

2. shape

• the form matter takes, such as circle, oval, square, rectangle or triangle

3. firm • Resisting change in shape, solid

Unit 2:5- States of Matter

New Vocabulary- Words You Will Learn

1. states of matter • phases in which matter can exist: solids, liquids and gasses

2. gas

• lightest state of matter, because the molecule are the farthest apart, has no definite shape or volume

3. liquid • A state of matter with a definite amount of matter

characterized by fluid, free-moving particles (molecules) that take the shape of its container

4. solid • A state of matter characterized by a definite shape and takes a

definite amount of space

5. matter • any substance that has mass and can exist ordinarily as a solid,

liquid, or gas

6. freeze/freezing • the change of a substance from a liquid to a solid as a result of

losing heat energy

7. melt/melting • the change of a substance from a solid to a liquid as a result of

adding heat energy

8. invisible • Not able to be seen such as gasses

9. heat source

• adding heat energy

10. heat • to become warm or hot, to make warm or hot, or the condition

of being warm or hot

11. evaporation • the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas as a result of

adding heat energy

Unit 2:5- States of Matter

Extension Vocabulary Words

1. liter • basic unit of volume or capacity ion metric system

2. mass

• amount of matter of an object

3. volume • amount of space occupied by matter

4. condensation

• the change of a substance from a gas to a liquid as a result of adding heat energy

States of Matter

2:5

Earth is full of solids, liquids, and gases. When it rains, water drops fall from the sky. The water drops are a liquid. When the water freezes it turns into ice. The ice is a solid. When the ice melts and dries up. It goes back into the sky as water vapor. This water vapor is a gas.

Can you think of some things that we find on Earth that are water in the form of a solid, a liquid and a gas?

Solid Liquid Gas

1. What causes a solid to melt? ________________________________________________________ 2. What causes a liquid to freeze? ______________________________________________________ 3. What causes a gas to evaporate? ____________________________________________________

2:5A Assessment States of Matter

TLW identify the properties of states of matter.

Directions: Answer the following questions. 1. Give an example of water found on Earth as a: solid ________________________________________________________________ liquid _______________________________________________________________ gas _________________________________________________________________ 2. If an object has its own shape and is visible, it is most likely a:

a. cloud b. liquid c. solid d. gas

3. Give an example of when these changes of matter happen:

melting____________________________________________________________________ freezing ___________________________________________________________________ evaporation ________________________________________________________________

2:5B Assessment States of Matter

B. TLW identify differences/similarities in state of matter. Directions: Fill in the chart below. For solid, liquid and gas, describe its shape and visibility:

a. For shape, write: stays the same or changes shape b. For visibility, write: visible (can be seen) or invisible (can not be seen)
