First Responders Salute, June 16, 2018 Speaker, John Kinzinger, US Veterans Organizer, introduced by Dale Leslie. John Kinzinger is president of Warriors and Caregivers Unit-ed; a board member of Michigan State American Legion Wilwin Re-treat; Chaplain of VFW Post 423, and VVA 2007 National Member of the Year. He was 2003 Michigan "Veteran of the Year", 2007 Vietnam Veterans of America's "National Vietnam Veteran of the Year, 2009 Ann Arbor News' (last) "Citizen of the Year", and 2001 VA National "Male Volunteer of the Year".
How did he receive all those awards? By raising his hand and volun-teering to help whenever needed. His latest project is the First Re-sponders Salute for all of Washtenaw County (public not invited), Honored by Military Veterans, to be held at the VFW Post 423 at 3230 S. Wagner Rd. on Saturday, June 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This event will celebrate all the first responders and retirees of Washtenaw County, police, fire, and EMS workers. The event is spon-sored by the Ann Arbor VFW and Ann Arbor American Legion. John
realized that this had not been done before in Ann Arbor and the project grew to include the whole county.
John is asking for Kiwanis members and volunteers to help on June 16 with promoting safety while children and visitors cross Wagner Rd. from the parking area to the VFW Post. All inter-ested in helping should contact John at 734-645-8647 or [email protected]. They will pro-vide a pulled pork meal, live music, bounce houses for children, and at 1:00 p.m. there will be a Remembrance Ceremony. Special dog tags will be given to the first 300 Responders.
MEMORIAL DAY REMBRANCE...
Dick Smit gave us an emotional reading of "In Flanders Fields", the most famous war memo-rial poem in the English language. It was composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915 during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian from Guelph, Ontario.
"In Flanders Fields" In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead, short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

GUESTS AT OUR CLUB...
Music Scholarship Recipient to be presented later. Jim Dries, potential new member and guest of Dan Burroughs. Rachel Mattson, guest of Jim and Ann Mattson. Melissa Zhou, Circle K. Jill Davidson, Circle K.
HOSPITALITY… Dr. Homer A. Neal, world-renowned physicist and former Interim President Emeritus of the University of Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, May 23rd. He was the first and only African American to preside over the University of Michigan.
Since we last met, Bob Snider was hospitalized at St. Joe's Hospital with some internal bleeding. His wife Luz, was quite concerned and initially thought surgery might be neces-sary. She says Bob is doing much better and that there was no evidence of cancer and he has been released from hospital.
Several members of our Kiwanis family attended the Celebration of Life ceremony of Club member Lynne's husband, Lars Lande. It was a joyous occasion mixed with moments of sadness. The pastor's remarks were compelling. Lars has been cremated and was to have taken his last trip to Fruitport as a passenger in his beloved emerald green 1938 DeSoto, but it was not to be, as the car had mechanical problems. Nevertheless, the car won a prize for best color.

Susan Smith is happy to be able to plant flowering plants donated by Carla Sum-mers.
Jill Davidson is very happy to be able to attend another Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor meeting and is especially happy because she was awarded a Circle K Past Presi-dents' Scholarship that will help pay for graduate studies!
Nick Dever is happy to ask all members to consider joining a committee that will decide where all the awards that were on the wall downtown should be placed in the Kiwanis Center. Contact Nick if you are interested in helping make these important decisions.
