Starting a scoreGetting going is quicker than ever withSibelius 3. There’s a list of the most commontasks to choose from – create a new score, open a recent file, scan, etc. You can start ascore entirely from a single, easy-to-usedialog – select instruments, key & time signa-tures, title, composer, tempo, etc. You canchoose the text fonts and house style (e.g.handwritten), and even create a title page –all from the same dialog.

InstrumentsWhen you create instruments, there aredifferent standard instrument ordersdepending on the type of music (e.g. band, orchestra, jazz). And you can now reorganizestaves into any order later.

There are over 60 new instruments – every-thing from anvils to Hawaiian steel guitar.Plus various new manuscript papers andextensively revised bands & orchestras, including a film orchestra designed by The Simpsons composer Alf Clausen.

Live Flexi-timeFlexi-time now records two voices on eachstaff at once, making it much quicker to writepolyphonic music.

Flexi-time also records the exact dynamic andtiming of each note (rather like a sequencer),to capture every nuance of your perform-ance. The music still appears as clean, quan-tized notation. You can then play your originalperformance with complete fidelity using LivePlayback (see overleaf), or make fine adjust-ments to the timing & dynamic of every note.

Shadow notesInputting pitches with the mouse sometimesused to be a bit of a hit-and-miss affair, par-ticularly if they were on leger lines. ButSibelius 3 shows you a ghostly ‘shadow’ notebefore you click, so you can see exactlywhere the note will go. What’s more, you cannow put notes anywhere in the bar just bypointing and clicking – you don’t need to cre-ate rests at the start of the bar first.

The screenDrag a rectangle with your mouse to zoominto that area. Or zoom in & out – and evennavigate around the whole score – using yourmouse’s scroll wheel (on Windows). We’vealso improved how the screenmoves when you’re editing andpaging through a score.

There’s a new display smoothingsetting that makes music evenclearer on the screen.

Plus there are new voice buttons on thekeypad, so you can leave the Properties

window switched off most of the time.

School featuresStudents find Sibelius so much fun to use inthe classroom that they sometimes playaround with it instead of getting on with theirwork! So now you can switch off all of theadvanced features, leaving only the mainthings students need for coursework.

You can also turn features on/off individually, and create your own feature sets for differentclasses – e.g. if you’re teaching how to trans-pose music by hand, you can stop studentstransposing it automatically!

Focus on stavesWhen writing for orchestra, band or other large ensemble, there are so many staves that it’s easyto get lost. So we’ve added two useful new features to help.

Focus on Staves shows just the staves you specify and hides all the rest, so you can work on just(say) the brass, or instruments which are far apart in the score. The hidden staves still play back,so you can also use this feature to hide realizations – such as a lead sheet that plays with a fullaccompaniment, even though only the melody is visible.

Also, you can ask Sibelius to number every bar and label every staff, so you can easily see whereyou are even when the instrument names are off the screen.

PlaybackCreate audio CDsThe revolutionary Save asAudio Track feature creates ahigh-quality sound recording ofyour score, ready to burn straight onto CD.So now you can produce high-quality CDs ofyour music to demo to performers & pub-lishers, for people to rehearse to, and forfriends to enjoy.

Save as Audio Track uses the exceptionalsounds from Kontakt Player Silver/Gold (seebelow) to create standard .wav and .aiff files, which you can burn to CD using any CDwriter. You can also turn them into MP3 filesto post on the Internet or send by email.

Due to the processing requirements of high-quality audio, you needa high-specification computer for best results from Save as AudioTrack and Kontakt Player Silver/Gold – see back page for details.

The Mac version of Kontakt Player Silver will be available as a freedownload in Nov 2003.

Kontakt Player SilverSibelius 3 includes Kontakt Player Silver, which performs your music using high-quality instrumental samples.

From Native Instruments, the world’s leadingsoftware synthesis company, Kontakt PlayerSilver includes 20 instrumental sounds – auseful selection of brass, woodwind, strings, percussion, voices and a Bösendorfer piano.

You can expand this to 64 or more sounds, including a wide range of useful orchestraland band instruments, by buying KontaktPlayer Gold with your upgrade (see box).

The quality of Kontakt Player Silver/Gold issimilar to sound modules costing hundredsof dollars or pounds – but don’t take ourword for it; hear them for yourself atwww.sibelius.com/3.

If you already have a good MIDI sound mod-ule or sampler, you can play scores on it inconjunction with the Kontakt Player.

Live playback If you create a score with Flexi-timeor from a MIDI file, just click the newLive Playback button to hear it with all thesubtle nuances of the original performance.

You can also fine-tune playback to perfection, like in a sequencer: view the dynamics as col-ored bars (see picture), and re-shape phraseswith the mouse.

The new Transform Live Playback dialog alsolets you adjust timings & dynamics en masse, such as making notes more staccato/legato,scaling dynamics, and making rhythms‘tighter’ or ‘looser’.

RepeatsSibelius 3 can play every kind of repeat youcan imagine – not just D.S., D.C., Coda,Segno and Fine, but complex repeat struc-tures with up to 8 repetitions. You can evenmake Sibelius jump between arbitrary pointsin the score during playback, e.g. to skipguitar fill boxes or simulate aleatoryperformances.

You can make individual notes, dynamics etc.apply only to certain verses or repeats, soyou could have the brass play just thesecond time round, or make verse 3 p andverse 4 f . What’s more, timecode nowshows separate timings for each repeat.

New Propertiesoptions for playingnotes, dynamics, etc. on differentrepeats, and forediting playback ofindividual notes

Check and adjust Kontakt Player sounds on the screen

Further improvementsSibelius 3 automatically plays dynamicsapplying to two keyboard staves, metricmodulations (e.g. q = e), and glissandi fromtied notes and over barlines.

You can set a metronome mark just by click-ing the mouse in the desired tempo.

The Keypad & Properties windows now dis-appear during playback, so you can see asmuch of the music as possible.

Sibelius 3 also includes a sophisticatedsound set editor to help you use any MIDIequipment.

Kontakt Player GoldKontakt Player Gold is the advanced version of Kontakt Player Silver, with many more high-quality sounds forplayback and for creating CDs with Save as Audio Track. Kontakt Player Silver is included with Sibelius 3, but youcan buy Kontakt Player Gold as an optional extra, at a special discount with your upgrade.

Kontakt Player Gold includes 64 pitched and 100 percussion sounds, covering orchestral, band, vocal, jazz, etc.– such as Piccolo, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Horn, solo & sectional brass and strings, string techniques (e.g. sulponticello), male & female voices and choirs, guitars, handbells, etc. Additional sound libraries are coming soon.

Power tools

Plug-insSibelius 3 includes no fewer than 30 extraplug-ins, now in a new main menu, plusmany improvements to existing ones.

The new Scales & Arpeggios plug-in willkeep instrumental students busy for months! It creates a complete set of scales and arpeg-gios from a huge range of possibilities – youcan specify any key or progression of keys(e.g. circle of fifths), double in octaves orthirds, use different clefs, write for single-staffor keyboard instruments, etc. As well asmajor and minor it includes diminished/dominant/minor 7th arpeggios, modal scales(e.g. dorian), jazz scales (e.g. lydian flat 7),numerous exotic scales such as octatonic &Japanese pentatonic, and more.

Other new plug-ins include:• Lyrics: apply traditional lyrics beaming, add

slurs to melismas, align lyrics

• Realize Figured Bass

• Realize Chord Symbols – create accompa-niments from lead sheets etc.

• Add Drum Pattern: writes for drum kit ina wide range of styles… and many more!

ScorchScorch now has an optional ‘split view’ soyou can see the next system before the pageturns. This lets you use your screen as amusic stand and play along.

Scorch includes most of the new Sibeliusfeatures, such as live playback and coloredobjects. You can even make lead sheets andjazz scores play back with hidden accompa-niments and realizations. Plus there’s a newplug-in which turns a folder of scores into acomplete indexed Scorch web site.

FilesBy popular request, we’ve made Sibelius 3able to save in Sibelius 2 format, so you’llremain compatible with other users even ifthey don’t upgrade.

When you open a MIDI file, the music isnow notated using 2 voices, just like Flexi-time. The original velocities and timings arepreserved, which you can play back and editjust as if you’d inputted using Flexi-time.Saving a MIDI file also saves these velocitiesand timings, and other new playbackenhancements such as complex repeats allwork equally well with MIDI files.

Save as Graphics can now export TIFF files, and there are new options to specify dpi res-olutions directly, adjust the staff size toimprove the quality, and output in mono-chrome to reduce file size.

Sibelius 3 can save all the lyrics from yourscore into a single text file, and now also

opens Finale 2004 ETF files.

We’ve replaced Transfer Saving with a newsystem which makes it easy to use your copyof Sibelius on two different computers with-out typing in long numbers.

Scales & Arpeggios plug-in: melodic minor scales in thirds

Auto page breaksThis remarkable time-saving feature putspage turns at convenient places for you inextracted parts. There are various usefuloptions such as how many bar rests to allowfor a turn – and if there isn’t a convenientplace, Sibelius can warn the player by writing‘V.S.’ or drawing spectacles in the margin!

Sibelius also instantly updates the page turnswhenever you change the music or layout. Auto page break after multirest No convenient page turn, so Sibelius draws

warning specs instead (optional)

ScanningSibelius 3 includesPhotoScore Lite 3, whichfeatures improved accuracy,e.g. it automatically cleans up dust, holes etc. on lower-quality originals. It nowscans 6-string guitar tab. Editing is quickerthanks to dragging of objects, zoom, andnumber keys to add intervals. PhotoScoreLite 3 also plays back multiple pages, includ-ing guitar tab, to help you spot mistakes.

PhotoScore Professional 3 has all theseimprovements too, plus it now works out thelength of pick-up (upbeat) and irregular bars, reads guitar frames and 4-string tab (includ-ing crosses), reads PDF files (on Windows, requires GhostScript), and has improvedrecognition of text, chord symbols, tupletsand other rhythms.

If you don’t have PhotoScore Professional, you can buy it with your Sibelius upgrade ata special discount. It reads text, slurs, ties, hairpins, articulations, tuplets, up to 32staves, 8 types of clef, up to 5 beams, and upto 200 pages.

If you already have PhotoScore Professional, upgrade it to version 3 separately fromSibelius, from www.neuratron.com.

Notation & EngravingOptical™ spacing Assisted by several of the world’s leadingmusic engravers, we have devised an entirelynew note spacing algorithm for Sibelius 3 –Optical spacing.

It’s designed to ensure that when notes arewidely spread, their spacing is unaffected byobstacles such as accidentals; but whenspace is tight, notes, accidentals, leger lines, lyrics, etc. all pack together as closely aspossible without touching. Space is onlyadded when required, and is removed againwhen no longer needed, e.g. if you deletean accidental.

This revolutionary algorithm also greatlyenhances the spacing of tuplets and cross-rhythms between staves, with furtherimprovements to lyrics. Advanced usershave precise control over all the intricacies, thanks to numerous adjustable options.

BeamingSibelius 3 has completely revised rules forbeaming notes into groups, based on thetime signature and context. But should youwant to adjust the beaming rules, a sophisti-cated new dialog lets you set beam groupsand subgroups of any length (e.g. 4, 6), orchoose to beam from, over and to rests.

There are also new options for breakingbeams around tuplets, and for using horizon-

tal beams throughout particular staves (e.g.percussion or guitar tab).

TextYou can now change the text font of all textstyles at once, with the new Edit All Fontsdialog. There are new plug-ins to find andreplace text, to reposition text (e.g. finger-ings) away from notes, and to revisedynamics en masse.

GuitarYou can now add your favorite guitar framesto libraries, for re-use in other scores. Theyalso now automatically transpose, and a newmenu option lets you step through alternativefingerings for any chord.

Tab input is now even easier: the arrow keysmove up/down the strings and left/rightthrough the bar, and you just type plainnumbers to specify frets.

When inputting from MIDI or copying fromnotation, you can specify your maximumstretch and preferred fingering range for tab,

e.g. between the 3rd and 10th fret; you canalso refinger existing tab using these settings. There are many new tab style options, such asshowing the tuning for each string at the startof the score.

Sibelius now loads and saves the popularASCII tab file format, making it easy to sharemusic with other guitarists via the Internet.

Among other guitar enhancements, you cannow scan in tab and guitar frames. Stringindicator lines are now included, as are 50 new fretted instruments and tunings –everything from 12 lute tunings to dulcimerand sitar. Sibelius 3 is also compatible withour new guitar software G7.

Further improvementsAmong other notation enhancements, youcan drag the right-hand side of systems toindent them; create ‘system’ symbols whichare extracted into all parts (e.g. for codas, segnos or pauses above barlines); and posi-tion system text with the arrow keys or usingAlign in a Row/Column.

Interference causedby tuplets andcross-rhythms

Unusually tight situation – accidentals could collide, legerlines run together, not enough space for tail at end of bar

Optical spacing redistributes free spaceto avoid these collisions

ColorYou can now change the color of

almost anything in the score – notes, text, lines, symbols, etc. This is particularlyuseful for educational music, annotatingsketches, and for making important markings(e.g. repeats and rehearsal marks) stand out. They print in color, too.
