March 2011OFFICINE GRANDI RIPARAzIONIThe Officine Grandi Riparazioni (Major Repair Workshops) are a masterpiece of industrial architecture in the heart of the city. Created at the end of the nineteenth century as an avant-garde centre for the repair and servicing of locomotives and railway carriages, they represent a sort of immense cathedral of the work with aisles up to 200 metres in length. Operational until the 1970s. they were completely dismantled at the beginning of the 1990s and, from 2007 onwards, handed over to the Città di Torino which designed the upgrading, transforming the spaces into venues for temporary exhibitions and cultural events. The project comes to a conclusion in March 2011, when the Officine Grandi Riparazioni will become one of the symbolic places of Esperienza Italia: indeed the exhibitions Fare gli Italiani, Stazione Futuro, Il Futuro nelle mani and the Spazio scuole will be housed here. Between one exhibition and another visitors will also be able to use educational workshops equipped with materials and multimedia supports capable of involving and thrilling younger generations, meeting areas that will host debates, conferences and shows. Representations of foreign cities boasting a relationship of friendship or affinity with Torino will be housed in purpose-built spaces. A bookshop will also be set up with publications, objects and merchandising dedicated to Italy and Italians and a coffee shop that will also include an ice-cream parlour, and a focacceria and a250-seater restaurant in which it will be possible to sample the most characteristic tastes of Italian regions, a journey through food with menus inspired by the protagonists of the Risorgimento (Cavour, Mazzini, Garibaldi, Bixio).www.officinegrandriparazioni.it

I Mille di Cioccolatòl’Italia del CioccolatoThe “Thousand” of CioccolatòThe Chocolate Italy Piazza Vittorio Veneto17 March - 3 April This special edition of the Cioccolatò festival is celebrating 150 years of unification by making a model Italy entirely from chocolate. The finished product will be 13 metres long and weigh around 14 tonnes. A surprising work that sees the active participation of an artistic staff of sculptors and first-rate master chocolate manufacturers and the technical cooperation of Italia in miniatura. Twenty of our principal monuments will also be reproduced, including the Mole Antonelliana, the Cathedral in Milan, the bell tower of St. Mark’s in Venice, the Faro in Genoa, the Colosseum in Rome, the Maschio Angioino in Naples. The event is completed by an exhibition itinerary “Gli italiani e il Cioccolato” (Italians and Chocolate) and by the section Choco shop with 1,000 varieties of Italian chocolates.www.cioccola-to.it

Tra il dire e il fare. Unity of Italy and European Unification: open sitesArchivio di Statountil 16 AprilThe exhibition retraces the principal problems of Italian unification, in parallel with the process of construction of the European Union. An exciting “intellectual” journey through seven rooms, in each of which a theme is dealt with (for example cultural roots, economy, civil rights, territory and communications). The part on the Unity of Italy is illustrated starting with original historical documents, the one relating to European unification however is based on lively graphical reconstructions, reproductions of thematic cartography, enlargements of photographs. The exhibition is curated by Maria Gattullo and Maria Paola Niccoli. www.archiviodistatotorino.it

Four new themes for the collections of the GAMGAM Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporaneafrom 4 MarchThe thematic setup of the collections of the GAM is repeated: four university lecturers and researchers of disciplines different from the history of art have chosen as many new themes represented in some of the works already exhibited and in more than 160 new works. The soul is the theme chosen by the theologian Vito Mancuso. In this section Einschüsse, the masterpiece by Anselm Kiefer recently purchased by the Gallery stands out.Information is the theme chosen by the physicist Mario Rasetti and presents works by Giuseppe Penone, Carla Accardi, Dadamaino, Depero, Mario Nigro and Carsten Höller. The psychiatrist Eugenio Borgna presents the theme of melancholy, which pervades works such as Asfissia! (Asphyxia) by Angelo Morbelli, still lifes by Giorgio de Chirico and Filippo De Pisis, hanging landscapes by Carlo Carrà and the same art in Giulio Paolini. The final theme, language was chosen by the philosopher Sebastiano Maffettone. It ranges from nineteenth-century painting and sculpture of historical fiction (Antonio Canova, Massimo d’Azeglio) to the iridescent permeations by Giacomo Balla, to the expressive figures of Renato Guttuso.www.gamtorino.it

A project on memory, myth, identity and stereotypesFondazione Merz25 March - 3 JulyThe African-American artist from New York who has shaken up the art world in the last fifteen years, presents in the spaces of the Fondazione cut papers in free expressions on the walls, a video-installation, drawings, collages and tempera paintings. Her exhibition project draws inspiration from the history of the birth of the African-American community in the United States, from slavery to the subsequent difficult racial integration and comes together into a figurative account played out against the shadow and outline of her famous black silhouettes. The event will be enriched by other moments: an international conference on the political and psychological dimension of racial stereotypes (25 and 26 March) and, at Cinema Massimo, a film festival which strongly inspired the work of the artist.www.fondazionemerz.org

Making Italians. 150 years of italian history17 March - 20 November A major exhibition on the history of our first 150 years, organised by Walter Barberis and Giovanni De luna. The itinerary unfolds along two parallel guiding principles: the chronological thread, the dates of the most important events in Italian history, and the thematic thread related in thirteen islands dedicated to the phenomena that have most influenced the profile of Italians: from the peasant world to school, migrations to the World Wars, political participation to factories, consumption, means of mass communication. The exhibition thus analyses the process through which “the Italians were made”, while highlighting the moments of inclusion and those of exclusion on the long journey of formation of the feeling of identity.Artistic direction by Paolo Rosa.Multimedia project Studio Azzurro.

March 2011Cavour, genius, seducer, gourmet Palazzo Cavour26 March - 26 JuneThe Palazzo witnessed the birth of Camillo Benso di Cavour, in its rooms the destinies of the new Italy were discussed and important round-table agreements were often concluded. The nucleus of the exhibition consists of an important selection of reception menus that celebrated the unity of Italy. Pass from the ballroom where an elaborate buffet is set up, to Cavour’s study to discover the less known aspects of the statesman, the women in his life, the secret cipher books to communicate with the sovereign.Visit the parlour games’ room and arrive in the courtly dining room where a banquet recalls a gastronomic challenge between Italian and French cuisine. The itinerary concludes with the boudoir of the countess of Castiglione, fleeting and fascinating protagonist of subalpine diplomacy. A second section reveals the “behind the scenes” of the reception: the work places of the head chefs, the recipe books of the most sophisticated chefs of the period and the workshops of suppliers, from the pastry chef to the seamstress to the photographer. www.mostrapalazzocavour.it

The biggest Potager garden in Italy rises up where in the 1800s the extensive cultivations of the farm of the Royal House were concentrated and is inspired by the ancient design of the vegetable gardens at one time present in the courtly Gardens of the Venaria. Cultural and botanical visits – designed by the Università degli Studi di Scienze Gastronomiche in collaboration with Slow Food – and many different workshops dedicated to food, an essential feature of the Italian identity, will put the public in direct contact with the variety and the richness of tradition and the Italian gourmet production. To complete the visit it will be possible to sample the regal dinners prepared each month, by great chefs.
