DedicationThis year’s Old Settlers celebration is dedicated to Walt and Donna

Pollman as the 2010 Grand Marshalls. The Pollmans were proprietors of Ferndale Drug from 1959 to 1999. Ferndale Drug as many of you remember was the shopping hub of the city; they carried just about everything and if they didn’t have it, they could get it.

Both Walt and Donna have given, and continue to give, countless volunteer

hours and support to the Ferndale community and Pioneer Park. Upstairs in the Parker House at Pioneer Park, the Pollmans have cre-

ated a Pharmacy Museum and have donated most of the items on display. We sincerely appreciate and honor them for all they have done for this community.

Steve Leibrant, President, WCOSA

ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe dedicated Officers and Trustees of the Whatcom County Old Settlers

Association, and the Ferndale Heritage Society would like to welcome every-one to the 115th annual Old Settlers Picnic.

The theme this year is “Volunteers thru the Years” We would like to acknowledge the city of Ferndale and the city employees,

the Ferndale school district, and the many businesses and community groups that assist us in making this community event happen each year.

There are many events taking place this weekend, make sure to check the event schedule. One of the new events this year will be a Motorcycle show on Sunday.

Please purchase your Ribbon for the weekend at the Headquarters build-ing. All of the proceeds from ribbon sales go directly to support next year’s event.

It takes many volunteers and many hours to make this event happen. Our thanks to all the volunteers, we appreciate their time and effort towards this event. The OSA would like to give a special thanks to the corporate sponsors -----for their donations to this event. Please thank our volunteers if you get a chance, and support the businesses that help to support this event.

Welcome everyone to this annual Ferndale community event. We hope you enjoy your time at historic Pioneer Park this weekend and

will return to this event every last full weekend in July for many years to come.

Ferndale Heritage Society

The Ferndale Heritage Society is proud to be celebrating the 115th Old Settlers Picnic along with the Old Settlers Association. Thanks to the dedication of both volunteer organizations, Pioneer Park is well maintained, utilized year round and has something for everyone to enjoy. 2010 continues the tradition as every year previous for the dedicated members of the Heritage Society. These volun-teers spend countless hours down at Pioneer Park doing a variety of projects all to make and keep Pioneer Park the “Jewel of Ferndale”. Highlights for 2010 include a successful annual Heritage plant sale at Samuel’s Furniture parking lot in May, and the annual cabin display during Old Settlers week in July just to name a few. In May, the annual education program for second and third grad-ers took place and is where students learned to make candles, grind corn, split shakes and do other tasks that pioneers did. Many dedicated volunteers from the Heritage Society and the local community help to make this happen. It’s truly what our mission is all about, preserving and sharing the gift of local history with the next generation of pioneers. The most obvious project you will see this year is the completed addition of the Larson cabin at the south end of the park. Old Settlers and Heritage volun-teers have worked together countless hours to get everything from the founda-tion up to the roof restored. The cabin has a Hunters theme. And of course, our green thumb volunteers are constantly tending flowers, watering and winning the all out war with weeds. If you visit the cabins during the Old Settlers Picnic, you will have an oppor-tunity to meet many of our 150 members of the Ferndale Heritage Society that host the cabins during this weekend. Members wear period costumes and tell the history of the cabin they are hosting. Upcoming events for 2010 include the Mystery Dinner Theater, in September, and our Olde Fashioned Christmas (OFC) event in the park will be Decem-ber 3rd, through the 5th. The OFC event includes tours of the decorated cabins with costumed tour guides, horse drawn wagon rides, refreshments, music, and hands-on crafts for children to make in the cabins. The Ferndale Heritage Society is open to everyone and is a great place to make new friends. The Ferndale Heritage Society meetings are held the last Tuesday of the month at the Tillicum House in Pioneer Park at 7 p.m. Meetings include a program speaker and great refreshments. The Log Cabin Church and the Tillicum House located in Pioneer Park can be rented to the public for special events. Guided tours of Pioneer Park and the Gift Shop take place from May 15 to September 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. For more information call Pioneer Park at 384-6461. Check us out at our new website http:/www.ferndaleheritagesociety.com or email us at [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you.

Walt and Donna Pollman are known around Fern-dale for many things, but at this year’s Old Settler’s Picnic, they will be fea-tured as the ceremonial Grand Marshals of the event.

The Pollmans moved to Ferndale in 1959 after purchasing the Ferndale Drug Store business at Main and Second Street. They owned and operated Ferndale Drug at that location until 1980, when they relocated the store to Fourth and Vista due to a need for a bigger building and more parking.

Love found at the Old Settler’s Picnic2010 Grand Marshals:

Their connection to the Whatcom Old Settlers Association dates back much further. Donna’s grandparents, HK and Georgia Russell, owned a farm out on Barrett Lake. A small cabin on this farm now stands at Pioneer Park, known as the Bar-rett Log Cabin. The Poll-mans became connected with the Old Settlers Pic-nic celebrations after the Barrett Cabin was moved to Pioneer Park.

In 1993, Donna joined with Louise Sager, Shir-ley Durham and Diana Weden to form the Fern-

SS

dale Heritage Society. The society curates the artifacts in the cabins at Pioneer Park, which are owned by the Whatcom Old Settlers’ Association.

In 1999, Walt and Donna retired from the drug store business after 40 years. In 2007, they chose to re-store the upper floor of the Parker House at Pioneer Park into a drug store mu-seum.

“We wanted to honor the

Mom and Pop stores of our era that are rapidly disappearing in the United States,” Donna said.

One of these artifacts, she said, is the original brass cash register from Fern-dale drug, dated all the way back to 1923.

“We feel honored and proud to have been able to serve and be part of this wonderful community for these many years,” Donna said.

The Whatcom Old Settlers Association features a cabin every year at the annual Old Settlers Picnic. This year, how-ever, will be a little different. One could call it a featured “outhouse” instead. That fact does not detract from its historical relevance. Back in 1935, on the order of President Franklin Roosevelt, the Works Progress Administration, later renamed the Works Projects Adminis-tration, was created to bring large numbers of unemployed citizens back to work during the Great Depression. Their job: to build and oversee different public works projects, from parks, bridges to schools. In this case, the task was to build outhouses. Whatcom Old Settlers museum curator Fred Sutc-liffe said these outhouses were built for two primary reasons. “One, to provide employ-ment for the people during the

Depression,” Sutcliffe said. “Two, to improve the sanita-tion in the rural areas in the United States.” He said the projects cost between $25 and $35 each to build. They were constructed with a concrete base and throat, with a lid that raised up when the user opened the door. Each outhouse featured a ventilation system. “It was a vast improvement over the crude ones that were just built over a hole,” Sutcliffe said. Many farmers and his-tory buffs keep the out-houses around as historical keepsakes. This particular outhouse came from Lummi Shore Road, and was donated by Bob & Shirley Bezona. The outhouse was brought to Ferndale from that location three or four years ago, Sutc-liffe said. The Whatcom Old Settlers needed to feature a cabin for this year’s Old Settler’s Picnic and, that this one was one of their last options at this point. “It’s one of the last of the houses down there, so either we get more houses or we think of something else,” Sutc-liffe said. That “something else” was the outhouse. He said last year the featured cabin was Larson House, which will also be open to the public this year.

FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK,WE SALUTE YOU!World famous and ready to rock, HELL’S BELLES is the premier all female AC/DC tribute act, blowing allcomers away. Playing ALL AC/DC, ALL the time, ALL over the globe, spanning all the pure rock brillianceof AC/DC’s career (From “High Voltage” to “Back and Black” and beyond), HELL’S BELLES do justice to theAussie legends with patented HELL’S BELLES devotion, precision, and fury. Endorsed by Angus Younghimself (Blender Magazine; 2003), HELL’S BELLES are the closest one can get without actually moving toAustralia and joining AC/DC’s road crew.

HELL’S BELLES formed in 2000, the brainchild of former member Amy Stolzenbach (Guitar), alongsideformer member, Om Johari (Vocals). The current 2005 line up features original member Mandy Reed, rockready and solid as Cliff Williams (Bass Guitar), Adrian Conner, dreadlock slinger and wicked player as AngusYoung (Lead Guitar), Lisa Brisbois, sly and subtly intense as Malcolm Young (Rhythm Guitar), Melodie Zapata, heavy hitter as Phil Rudd (Drums), and finally, grabbing both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson by the balls, confident and exuberant, the “New, Hot Belle”, Jamie Nova (Lead Vocals).

HELL’S BELLES is about AC/DC, they’re about the finest rock they’ve got to offer, and they’re also aboutempowering women to get “Up Front” in rock. HELL’S BELLES go to great lengths to encourage women toplay music, to get involved, to grab and hold a piece of the action. Representing for a whole new generationof women that won’t be intimidated, HELL’S BELLES actively support women-populated bands, by makingsure to include them in shows and interviews whenever possible. Not some down-your-throat feminism, but a proactive support and action spirit towards the continued balancing of the gender scales.

The hundreds and hundreds of shows HELL’S BELLES have played around the world, including Japan, Canada, and the good ‘ol U.S.A. (including Alaska), have become legendary nights of epic proportions. Sold Out,Sexed Up, and Starving for a little dynamite — there's not a HELL’S BELLES audience that hasn’t beenblown away by the raw power and undeniable appeal of that these Bad Ass Belles serve hot. From “LiveWire” to “The Jack” to “TNT”, it’s an all out rock-n-roll assault that leaves you begging for more. And, moreyou’ll get as HELL’S BELLES keep conquering new cities, new states, and new countries. They’ll be in yourback yard spreading the AC/DC New Testament any day now.

If there’s one thing that Ferndale is known for is volunteering. Volunteers spend time at the food bank, working in the parks, clean-ing up the city and just about everywhere you look someone is donating time and energy to a person, place or event. In recognition of all the volunteers at Pioneer Park and events, this year’s Old Settler’s Days festivities is honoring volunteers throughout the years. The list of volunteers is long- so long it is nearly impossible to list everyone and not leave out someone’s name. According to Steve Leibrant, current presi-dent of the Whatcom Old Settlers Associa-tion, there are members of the Old Settlers Association, the Heritage Society and countless members of the community who volunteer in many capacities to maintain the park as well as organize and work at the Old Settlers Days events.“The celebration itself is all due to the hard work of the volunteers each year,” he said. According to Leibrant, two of the hard work-ing volunteers, Walt and Donna Pollman were nominated as Grand Marshals this year. They were both man and woman of the year and are go-getters, he added.Member Nancy Riley nominated the Poll-mans and they were enthusiastically given this year’s honor by the trustees with a unanimous decision.Leibrant accepted his two-year term as president of the Whatcom Old Settlers As-sociation in November 2009 following Don Imhof’s term and said that he has already relied heavily on the ideas, time and energy of the volunteers.Everything boils down to the volunteers he said. With his own involvement volunteering at Pioneer Park doing needed work and help-ing with events throughout the past 10 to 15 years, Leibrant said it is the energy, enthu-siasm and camaraderie of all the volunteers that should be applauded. Now as president it is those people who make his job easier.“I work on getting the permits and arrange-ments needed for contracts, the liquor license and things like that,” Leibrant said, “But it’s the volunteers who make it all hap-pen.”There are a lot of behind the scenes work that needs to be done before kicking off the event. Obtaining a city permit and a liquor license, renting the high school cafeteria for the bathroom use where the parade lines up, making garbage contract arrangements and meeting with the mayor to secure and hire adequate law enforcement for the parade

and dance are just a few things Leibrant’s role dictates as his responsibility. The cost of the event is a concern, he said.“It’s getting expensive, and there’s not a lot of money coming in,” Leibrant said.Along with the expense of permits and con-tracted services, Leibrant said the entertain-ment takes a big portion of the money. The event is free and Leibrant said it should remain that way. Money is raised by visi-tors buying a ribbon and signing up to get their name in next year’s book for $3. This helps to cover the cost of the current event, the permits, the books and entertainment as well as hopefully starting a cushion for next year. There are also corporate sponsors who help with a larger amount of the money needed.“If there is any extra money it goes into the park to re-do cabins,” Leibrant said. The Larsen Barn, dedicated to Fred Sutcliff who works tirelessly on the structure, cur-rently needs supplies and they are hoping to get some extra money to put aside for that. “Kim Fox is in charge of finding the enter-tainment and that is a tough job because that is something that changes every year,” Leibrant said. Along with musical performances by the Pop-Offs, Reminisce, Hells Bells, Summer Night Pops in the Park, the Bellingham Alumni Band, Double Wide and the Rocky Vasalino show, there are some new things to draw the crowds this year including an impressive number of 39 vendors and a motorcycle show. The annual car show will be set up in the Central Elementary School playground on Saturday followed by the first-time bike show on Sunday. “The car show started out with a few cars and now they fill the whole field, and we’re hoping the motorcycle show will grow over the years also,” Leibrant said.Leibrant, who has spent 34 years as a fabri-cator at Reinke’s in Ferndale said he would like to thank all of the people that have helped all year long and on this event. The Heritage Society, the Old Settler’s As-sociation, city hall, the public works and police departments have made my first year easy and of them next year will be a breeze, he said.

Old Settler’s Days celebrates-Volunteers throughout the years

“To all the volunteers throughout the-

years, thank you,” Leibrant said.
