What’s Inside: Happy November!

Dear 4-H Members, Local Leaders, Volunteers, Teachers, and Principals:

November is a great time to look at all the things we have to be thankful and grateful for!

We have some fun Thanksgiving things coming up at our Youth Council Meeting so be sure

to join us November 6th. The 4-H Agent and the new 4-H Agent Assistant has met with

each in-school club during the month of October to present fun 4-H programming. In this

November Newsletter edition you will find all the Marion County 4-H upcoming events,

photos from our 4-H Pet Show, photos from our 4-H Horse Camp, a 4-H Club Calendar,

and some upcoming 4-H events. We have a lot coming up for Marion County 4-Her’s so

The Annual Marion County 4-H Pet Show took place Saturday, October 14th, at the Hamilton Tractor Supply Company Store. Youth from all over Marion County came out to participate in the 4-H Pet Show by either showing their pet or volunteering to help run games, face painting, gourd painting, help with set up/take down, or registration. Congratulations to all participants and winners! The Pet Show was so much fun this year and we truly appreciate all the youth, parents, and family that came out to participate. Marion County 4-H would like to thank the 4-H Youth Council for their hard work filling goodie bags for Pet Show winners, Habitat Chapter Members for helping lead games, do face painting, help set up/break down the show, and take pictures, the Winfield Bottling Company for donating the Banners for our Youth Council to decorate for the show, Marion County Extension Staff for their help getting everything ready for the show, our judges Dr. Melissa Shotts and Ms. Ellen Gregg for taking time out of their Saturday to support the youth of Marion County, and of course the Hamilton Tractor Supply Company store staff for allowing us to have our Pet Show at their store and for all their staff help. The Pet Show is always a really fun day and we hope to continue this tradition in the future.

Welcome to the 4-H Team!

You may have noticed a new face around the 4-H Office. The Marion

County 4-H Team would like to welcome Mrs. Ginger Eatman as the

new 4-H Agent Assistant that will be helping out the 4-H Agent during

the 2017-2018 4-H Club Year. Mrs. Eatman was a very active 4-Her

when she was in school. She has a heart and passion for educating

the youth of Marion County. We are so glad to welcome Ginger and

we look forward to a great 4-H Club this year!

4-H Horse Camp at Alexandria Farms

Saturday, October 21st, 2017: Twelve youth from Marion, Franklin, and

Winston County enjoyed 4-H Horse Camp at Alexandria Farms. Youth

learned barn rules, good horsemanship, horse grooming, how to saddle a

horse, proper English riding techniques, played games, enjoyed a Hallow-

een craft, rode horses, enjoyed snacks/lunch, and made new friends. A big

thank you goes out to Allie, Renate, Meghan, Abbi, and Eme for helping

make the 4-H Horse Camp such a fun event for our youth!

Farm City Poster, Essay, Multimedia Contest Congratulations to our Farm City Contest Winners! We had over 400

entries this year! The judges had a very tough decision.

2017 Theme: “Agriculture: Food for Life” All youth ages 9-18 in Marion County are welcome to enter this year’s Farm City Contests.

WHAT IS CITIZENSHIP WASHINGTON FOCUS?Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a week-long 4-H citizenship program for youth ages 14-18 that takes place at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center, just 1 mile from the Washington, DC border.

Every summer, thousands of young people participate in the program, which provides opportunities for them to:

• strengthen their communication, leadership, and citizenship skills on a national level

• understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities as they relate to the development of better citizens and leaders

• exchange ideas, practice respect, and form friendships with other youth from diverse backgrounds

• experience hands-on learning using the historical backdrop of Washington, DC

CWF PARTICIPANTS ENJOY...• a behind-the-scenes look at our nation’s capital and the chance to

meet Members of Congress• motivational speakers, educational workshops, and assemblies that

increase individual commitment to citizen involvement and build lifetime skills for success

• activities that encourage new and lasting friendships• an enthusiastic staff of young adults that work directly with them

Participants are immersed in the culture and history of Washington through onsite workshops at its most spectacular sights. Destinations include, but are not limited to:

• The Capitol• Mount Vernon• Arlington National Cemetery• Presidential and war monuments and memorials• Smithsonian museums

HOW MUCH?• $500.00 (total)

• $100.00 non-refundable deposit due with application by December 1, 2017)

• $400.00 balance due by March 1, 2018 (payments can be made between December and March).

2018 ALABAMA APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:• Applicants must be Senior Level 4-H Members (14-18 years of age).• The application for the 2018 CWF must be received in its entirety by

December 1, 2017 through 4HOnline. The following pieces are part of that application process:

• 4HOnline Application• My 4-H Story (There are two formats to choose from; please see

guidelines below)• Two reference letters; including one from Extension staff. The

piece should be saved as a PDF and uploaded into 4HOnline. (Please see guidelines below)

The decision of the Selection Committee is � nal. Delegates will be selected and announced by February 1, 2018.

MY 4-H STORY FORMAT GUIDELINES:• Written Format:

• Use Arial or Times New Roman, 12 point font and one inch margins. The story is a maximum of 2000 words. Check your spelling and grammar. Save “My 4-H Story” as a PDF and upload into 4HOnline.

• Digital Format:• “My 4-H Story” may be submitted in a video format. The “My

4-H Story” video not exceed � ve minutes and must be on a DVD that will play on a standard computer. The “My 4-H Story” DVD will need to be mailed to Mrs. Joy Scott, 205 Duncan Hall-ACES, Auburn University, AL 36849. The DVD must be postmarked by December 1, 2017- No Exceptions!

What Is National 4-H Conference?At the invitation of the Secretary of Agriculture, this event is the USDA’s premier youth development opportunity to engage youth from across America in developing recommendations for the National 4-H Youth Development Program. Delegates at this working conference will create a product that will help guide the future of the National 4-H Youth Development Program. Delegates are also ambassadors for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Alabama 4-H, representing Alabama 4-H interests with U.S. Senators and Representatives on Capitol Hill Day. The conference brings together youth, volunteer leaders, and Extension staff from across the United States and its territories as well as the Canadian provinces. learn leadership skills, help plan county events, and help plan/participate

in Community Service Activities. We will be doing a community service

activity at the November Youth Council Meeting-you don’t want to miss it!

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT Put your name, grade, school, and category on the back of your entry.

This is an individual event (no teams/help).

Photos may be color or black and white.

Photos must be 5 x 7 or smaller.

Photos should be mounted flat on plain white paper-

no larger than 8.5x11. Picture sequence boards

should be NO larger than 22”x22” total (use 5x7 or

smaller photos).

The photos must be original photos that you took.

Photos must have been taken during the current 4- H

Year.

You can enter each category one time only.

Categories are:

3. Nature and Buildings

4. Picture Sequence - consisting of three or more

pictures that tell a story.

What Judges Will Look At ?

How the photo is put together – Is the photo well arranged? Did the photographer

use the best angle or point of view?

Focus and Sharpness – Is the photo in focus? If it’s not in sharp focus, did you mean

it for an artistic effect?

Lighting – Did you use lighting to create a mood or effect?

Is the picture creative?
