It’s the top issue of the 2012 presidential campaign. It’s the number one source of stress and worry for college students, older adults and
everyone in between. the poor economy.
Hospitals, often viewed as pillars of their community’s economic base, are certainly not immune to the effects of a recession. To help gain some perspective on how PAH is fairing in the current economic climate, What’s New sat down with PAH Chief Financial Officer Frank Anastasi FHFMA, MBA.

WN: How does PAH stand in regards to its current renovations and construction projects?
FA: We’re currently in the second year of our four-year, $61 million Master Facilities Plan. It’s all systems go as we continue to progress on schedule with construction of our new outpatient facility, Penn Medicine Washington Square — slated to open by the fall of 2013 — and the Private Room Initiative to convert Pennsylvania Hospital to all single occupancy patient rooms by 2015.
WN: So how’s the hospital doing financially?
FA: In FY ’12 we did remarkably well, particularly considering that we were down in surgery admissions. Despite this, we still hit our overall targets due mostly to efficiencies generated by our excellent management team. We flexed our labor force to best accommodate fluctuations in patient volume. Our main objective is to manage our resources efficiently so to ensure that we have the staff we need to take care of our patients.

PAH staff, employees and volunteers alike gathered together September 19 and 20, to usher in the fall season at the 2012 Harvest fest Employee Barbeque. the annual event, held at both PAH during all three shifts and the tuttleman Center, is sponsored by administration to show employees how much they are valued and appreciated.

WN: Which departments or services are showing particular strength?
FA: Obstetrics continues to grow steadily, even as overall national birth rates are on the decline. We were also right on target with the projected Emergency Department volume. And while over all inpatient volume was down, both CyberKnife and Gamma Knife patient volumes have exceeded target.
WN: What lies ahead for the hospital in the coming year?
FA: While overall patient activity is down for the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2013, I fully expect us to meet this challenge head on. It’s an exciting time for the hospital, one of change and growth. We’re currently striving for a more balanced portfolio. While we’re working to stabilize current physician practices, we’ve also recruited new physicians – 39 in all – into departments all throughout the hospital including major services lines such as Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Radiation Oncology and Urology.

As you know, Penn Medicine has joined leading health care organizations across the country in requiring seasonal flu immunization for all faculty, staff, students, volunteers and contracted personnel in order to protect patients, employees, family members and the community from influenza infection through annual immunization.
over past recent years, 99 percent of PAH and uPHS employees have been vaccinated for seasonal influenza. Getting the flu vaccine reduces the risk of illness for our staff and helps keep our patients, colleagues, and families safe and healthy. uPHS has been recognized by the State of Pennsylvania for this key patient safety initiative.
Provided at PAH free of charge, seasonal influenza vaccines are needed annually for maximum protection. the 2012-13 seasonal influenza vaccine protects against the three most likely influenza strains expected to
circulate this year, all of which are different from those in the prior year’s vaccine.

the Center for Bloodless Medicine & Surgery (CBMS) at PAH recognizes that blood is a precious and scarce resource. the CBMS strives to effectively coordinate and attain the blood management needs of a patient by using the latest drugs, technology and techniques to decrease blood loss and enhance the patient’s own blood supply.
Blood Management Awareness Week, being held from october 15 to 19, is designed to highlight the collaborative team approach employed at PAH to assess the blood management needs of our patients.
You can come and meet members from the CBMS during their special week of activities. Members will be available to answer questions, clear up misconceptions and discuss how blood management benefits everyone.
ConGrAtuLAtIonS to Thanh Pham, mBA, BS, rPh, who was promoted to the Pharmacy team Leader-Clinical operations position at PAH. thanh first joined Pennsylvania Hospital in 2004 as a clinical pharmacist. His prior and diverse experience includes working as a clinical pharmacist at a large commercial health plan, a national retail drug chain, as well as a local university-based health system.
“During his time with us, thanh has been an integral team member participating in many initiatives including the BooSt program to reduce congestive heart failure readmissions and pharmacist-managed Core Measure compliance,” said Suzanne Y. Brown, mS, rPh, director of Pharmacy Services. thanh has demonstrated a record of leadership both interdepartmentally as well as across disciplines, as he was instrumental in the development of the hospital’s Alaris pump library and most recently was selected as one of the Educational Leads for the Knowledge Based Charting enterprise-wide implementation. “thanh’s firm understanding of inpatient and outpatient operations, coupled with his depth of knowledge in clinical, technical and operational initiatives, enhance the Pharmacy leadership team as the department continues to offer expanded services to our patients and the hospital,” added Brown.
thanh’s responsibilities will include coordinating clinical and operational support for the department; ensuring daily operational services meet expectations; facilitating communication and education within the department; and participating in performance improvement initiatives related to medication management.
thanh received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from temple university and his MBA from rosemont College.
Becker’s Hospital review recently announced their list of “100 Hospitals with Great Women’s Health Programs,” which recognizes some of the most outstanding hospitals for their women’s health programs in the uS. PAH and HuP are both recognized on the list as hospitals that offer outstanding programs within women’s health, including gynecology, obstetrics, reproductive medicine and other gender-specific conditions and health needs.
to compile this list, the Becker’s Hospital review editorial team utilized several resources, including clinical accolades, quality care and women’s health proficiencies and awards. the hospitals were recognized for their excellence in women’s health by several sources, including the uS Department of Health and Human Services and its national Centers of Excellence in Women’s Health model; U.S.News & World Report, HealthGrades, the World Health organization’s and unICEf’s Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative, Delta Group CareChex and the American nurses Credentialing Center.
