On Friday 1st June, the college hosted a Leavers’ Lunch for all 2012 leavers. It was a wonderful event with much laughter and a few tears as both staff and students reminisced about the previous two year.

We would like to thank our leavers for the contribution they have made to the college. We wish them every success in the summer and in their future careers.

To celebrate the last day of the academic year we held an Olympic-themed sports day at the college. Students who had taken part in the 100m events collected their bronze, silver and gold medals on an Olympic-style podium, and there were also plenty of events for non-sports students to get involved with. Feedback on the event was extremely positive and there seemed to be a great vibe around college - everyone wanted to be involved in something and there was a real competitive edge to some of the events. We’re grateful to the Sports department staff and students for all of their hard work to make the event worthwhile. Here’s to the next Olympics!

Former Huddersfield New College student Scott Kay visited the college to see members of staff and to let us know how he’s getting on over in America.

After completing his A Levels in Maths and Performing Arts, Scott, 21, attended the New York Conservatory For Dramatic Arts and graduated with a 3.8 Grade Point Average - an A grade in this country.

He is currently awaiting the outcome of his application for a three year visa to work as an actor in New York.

In the UK, Scott has appeared in Waterloo Road and Heartbeat, as well as having one of the main roles in the BBC adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Johnny And The Bomb.

Scott’s sister Terrelle is a current AS Level student at the college.

Students have been honoured for their plan to enhance public transport.

Members of the Kirklees Youth Council College Network Group were recognised at the Diana Active Campaigner Awards - in memory of Princess Diana.

The 12 strong group from Kirklees colleges tested out public transport standards across West Yorkshire, and fed back ideas and information to Metro and local councils.

They also surveyed 700 young people to gain valuable information about their transport concerns.

They came up with solutions to some of the problems, produced

online material for young people and developed a training package for all Year 6 pupils in West Yorkshire.

The group was represented at the London awards by Chloe Lumb, from Dewsbury and Dominic Phillips, from Huddersfield New College.

Dominic said: “The Metro work has been challenging but rewarding. We feel we have benefited other young people by connecting services with the voices of young people.”

Chloe said: “We feel Metro have listened to us and taken some of our points on board. Hopefully speaking with transport providers will help young people to get the best deal.”

A hospital has received a cash boost thanks to the hard work of students at Huddersfield New College who have raised £412 for the Special Care Baby Unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital.

The students on the Diploma in Vocational Studies course did this by holding a fundraising day.

They organised a homemade cake sale and tombola stand after voting to raise money for the hospital.

The event was part of their course aimed at building confidence through teamwork and developing skills such as customer communications.

Students Yasser Khan, Modestas Sinkevicius and Marium Fatima are pictured presenting the cash they raised to unit staff Amanda Rhodes and Gillian Mitchell.

Sister Kath Barnes said “We are very grateful for the students efforts and it was a real pleasure to invite them into the unit. We thank them for their generosity and for thinking of us, our young patients and their families.”

Another academic year is drawing to a close and it’s almost time to implement our updated and improved equality and diversity plan, but first let’s celebrate the activities we have undertaken since March 2012.

In early March we held a football and flapjack event to promote Fair-trade Fortnight, in conjunction with Royds Hall High School. Pupils from the school and college students were invited to participate in a football ‘keepy uppy’ competition, using fair-trade footballs. The participants’ skills were impressive, particularly amongst the school pupils, two of whom were eventually pronounced the winners of the competition. Well done to everyone who took part.

College staff and students were also encouraged to ‘take a step’ to support fair-trade and in exchange for making a fair-trade pledge they were able to sample a piece of fair-trade flapjack, made especially for the event by Innovate, the College’s on-site catering company.

To reflect feedback obtained through the Investors in Diversity accreditation process and impending summer examinations series, in May we held a stress-buster event which was intended to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of stress and promote positive steps people can take to prevent and minimise those symptoms. Staff and students had the opportunity to join in with a rowing machine challenge, to highlight the positive physical and mental health benefits of exercise.

To coincide with the stress-buster event, the College’s virtual ‘stress button’ was launched. The stress button is a resource located on the College’s VLE, for staff and students who may want to find out more about stress, whether as a preventative measure, for tips on self-help or just out of curiosity. The experience of stress is becoming increasingly prevalent amongst young people and in employment and it is something that as a College we recognise and take seriously. Hopefully our event and

online resources have already been helpful to a number of people. Special thanks go to Kate Birch, Erika Montgomery, Joe Norton and Ashleigh Carr for the work they put into organising the stress-buster event and the launch of the virtual stress button.

June was Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month and to raise awareness of this we encouraged students to undertake a short, research-based quiz as part of their tutorial sessions and we to inform people about aspects of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller culture and traditions through displays and our promotional screens across college.

At the time of writing, we’re heavily into preparations for our Cultural Olympics event, which will take place on 5th July 2012. The Olympic torch travelled through Brighouse and Huddersfield on Sunday 24th June but didn’t quite make it to the College so we fully intend to add our own spark to the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Let’s hope the weather favours us that day!

Finally, we will shortly be saying goodbye to our two current student diversity champions, Dilara Changis and Dominic Phillips, both of whom have been members of our diversity group since September 2011. Dominic and Dilara are both leaving the College to take up places at university. We wish them well for the future and would like to thank them for their contribution to the diversity group this year.

Our students successfully participated in Enrichment Week where there were a variety of activities on offer. Staff organised trips to Alton Towers, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Xscape, Go Ape as well as Magna and Doncaster Wildlife Park. Students could also engage with activities in college and learn new skills such as bag making, knitting, felt making and baking. Fun and interesting opportunities were given to our students to build their life skills with projects such as ‘Ice and Fire’ and ‘Cooking for Friends’ at Royds Hall Cooperative Trust. Other activities on offer included Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, Creative Writing, Flamenco Dancing, Treasure Hunt, Film and Pop quizzes.

myLeonardoexperience

I am studying Children’s Care Learning and Development at Huddersfield New College.

While I was in Sweden I lived with Eva and her husband Jan Svanberg in Kungshamn. While I was in Sweden, I worked at Asenskolan School Kungshamn which was a school with a day care centre attached to the high school. I worked at the school Monday to Friday, half past 8 to 4pm. When I started working at this placement, I was nervous, but everyone was so welcoming and kind. The staff and even the children helped me to understand their language so there was no communication barrier between us. I loved working at this school because it was so different to the schools back at home. For example the children don’t have to wear a school uniform, they can wear what they want to every day, but they still have to wear separate clothes for P.E, such as shorts and a t-shirt. In the school, the children and staff would all eat their dinner together and everyone would have school meals that were made for them. This is because the children can have free school meals while in education up until the age of 16. My best memory will be meeting lots of different people from different cultures and backgrounds and seeing how they live. I loved working with the children and staff at the school because they were so helpful in making us feel welcome and helping us to fit in.

Huddersfield New College Boys Football Academy have won the English Colleges Football League for the first time in their history, beating their title rivals Durham College 2-0 in the final match of the season. The match was tight, eventually settled by two late strikes.

The win follows on from the recent success by the Huddersfield New College Football Academy, after they were crowned British Colleges league winners last month, and has proved a fitting finale to what has been a challenging but rewarding season.

In the last issue of What’s New we reported that Paul Hagreen had been chosen to be a torch bearer in the Olympic Torch Relay.

Paul ran his leg of the relay on Monday 25th June, just outside Barnsley.

He was kind enough to bring the torch into college on the 2nd July so we could hold our own Olympic Torch Relay here at college.

Here are some photos of that event...
