Nurse Kitchen, who was bred by retired trainer Peter Moody and catalogued as Lot 758, is expected to return to pre-training in the coming days with a potential Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) tilt on her agenda.

Raced by Moody’s wife Sarah, the Bhima Thoroughbreds-consigned Nurse Kitchen was purchased by China Horse Club representative Michael Wallace in a spirited bidding duel with YuLong Investments which opened at $500,000.

As well as last October’s Group Two victory, Nurse Kitchen was runner up in the Vinery Stud Stakes (registered as Storm Queen Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) on 25 March before she finished sixth in the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) on 8 April.

“She is a filly we believe has some great racing upside as we head into the next 12 months with her,” Wallace said.

“We think she is capable of winning Group One races if everything went her way. She is already a Group Two winner and Group One-placed filly by Savabeel, so she has a high level of value regardless.”

Nurse Kitchen is out of the three-time winner Flying Monty (Montjeu), herself a half-sister to the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Hades (Zabeel), dual Listed winner Everbright (Cape Cross) and the stakes-placed pair Swan Lake (Green Perfume) and Katchmekate (Bakharoff). Moody has a weanling sister to Nurse Kitchen, who could be offered at next year’s yearling sales.

“She is a filly that Sarah and I bred and Sarah raced her with David Brideoake and he did a tremendous job with her,” Moody said.

“We have mum and a weanling full sister at home, so it was time to cash in and move on and let's hope the sister can do the job for us.”

Bhima Thoroughbreds’ Mike Fleming said the result was just reward for Moody, a strong supporter of the Scone-based operation.

“I have had a good relationship with Peter over the last couple of years and we have been selling some nice race fillies off the track for him and the Wylie Dalziel partnership,” Fleming told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“With the price Nurse Kitchen made, it just shows you, particularly being a Savabeel mare and being an outcross mare, the value that they have.

“There is so much Danehill influence in Australia and those outcross mares are really well sought after and when you get a couple of people that just want them, anything can happen.”

China Horse Club also secured the Glenesk Thoroughbreds-offered supplementary entry Inspired Estelle (Manhattan Rain), a half-sister to Group One winner and former Australian Horse of the Year Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice).

Wallace went to $925,000 to buy the well-bred filly and believes she has plenty to offer as a racehorse before being retired to stud.

Catalogued as Lot 1680, the Glenesk Thoroughbreds-sold Inspired Estelle is a juvenile winner who ran fourth in the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). The three-year-old filly, who was trained by Toby Edmonds on the Gold Coast, has had 11 starts and ran third last start on 20 May at Doomben.

Wednesday 31 May 2017 Nurse Kitchen Sells For $1,700,000

Inspired Estelle is out of MVRC Champagne Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Estelle Collection (Stravinsky) who is a blood sister to stakes winner La Sizeranne (Stravinsky) and Sara Ann (Stravinsky), the dam of 2016 ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Tavago (Tavistock).

Glenesk Thoroughbreds Brett Howard told ANZ Bloodstock News a filly with her pedigree deserved to make the money that she did.

“I wouldn't have been surprised if she made more as she is a blue

chip filly and I think she is one of those fillies that anyone in Australia, New Zealand or the world would be proud to own,” Howard said.

“I am delighted for China Horse Club and I think they will look back in a year or two's time and say, ‘wow, she is cheap’.”

The sole current Group One winner still racing in the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale, the Kelly Schweida-trained Miss Cover Girl (Monashee Mountain), was bought for $500,000 after initially being passed in. She was purchased by Dermot Farrington within minutes of leaving the sales auditorium.

Catalogued as Lot 748, the Kelly Schweida-trained five-year-old won last year’s Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm and was sold as a racing and breeding proposition by her current owners.

Miss Cover Girl is out of winning Show A Heart (Brave Warrior) mare Tolart, while her second dam I Told You (Sea Road) is a three-quarter sister to stakes-placed Grouse Lane (Sea Road) and a half-sister to Huntington Girl (Black Zephyr), the dam of Listed winner Key Bar Nights (Anabaa).

YuLong Buys Champion New Zealand Filly

YuLong Investments owner Yuesheng Zhang was determined to take home dual Group One winner and former champion New Zealand middle distance mare Soriano (Savabeel) in foal to Tavistock (Montjeu).

Having missed out on Nurse Kitchen earlier in the day in a bidding duel with China Horse Club, the Dormello Stud-offered Soriano was sold to YuLong Investments for $1,150,000, the joint second top lot on Day One.

Wednesday 31 May 2017 YuLong Buys Champion New Zealand Filly

Cataloged as Lot 881, Soriano, a winner of nine races and seven at stakes level, is out of Listed winner Call Me Lily (Just A Dancer) making her a half-sister to the stakes-placed Affairoftheheart (Fusaichi Pegasus). Soriano has a weanling filly by Pins (Snippets) born last year.

Bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills, who was acting on behalf of the Yu Long Investements yesterday, said Zhang was keen to acquire elite fillies and mares to race and breed in Australia.

“Mr Zhang was underbidder earlier in the day on Nurse Kitchen and at the moment he is trying to establish a name of good quality in Australia,” Mills said.

“He has brought some high quality mares (to the Gold Coast) to sell and he wanted to buy some high quality ones as well.

“He's very much focused his business in two areas, he buys a large volume of horses because he's very keen to get racing going in China and establish a stud book up there, and he really wants to make China a legitimate racing nation.”

Mills said no mating plans had been arranged for Soriano“No matings are confirmed yet but most of his breeding stock is at

Widden and although he has a farm in Victoria, it is full of horses in work and spellers and so on. I guess a mare of her sort of quality will be mated in the Hunter Valley.”

New Zealand trainer Graeme Rogerson, the proprietor of Dormello Stud, said he has a three-quarter sister to Soriano and wanted to support Magic Millions owner Gerry Harvey, a long-time owner with his stable.

“I thought she would make more money, but they were good enough to bid, so I put her on the market,” Rogerson said.

“I think (Tavistock) is the next Savabeel and she is a great mare. I have got her three-quarter sister to train, so I am sad to see her go, but Gerry Harvey is very good to us and he has a lot of horses with me.”

Yu Long Investments meanwhile spent $1,480,000 on three lots yesterday.

Harron Grabs Elite FilliesPetits Filous (Street Boss), a Ciaron Maher-trained mare who won

her first four starts in comprehensive fashion, has also been added to the broodmare band of Belinda Bateman after selling for $1,150,000 yesterday.

The Glastonbury Farms-consigned four-year-old, who was catalogued as Lot 1687 as a supplementary, will be retired immediately and sent to stud.

Petits Filous is out of the Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Excellent Lady, who is a half-sister to Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner La Bella Dama (Desert Sun) who is the dam of St George Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) winner La Rocket (Rock Of Gibraltar).

She is also a half-sister to the stakes-placed pair Macau Causeway (Giant’s Causeway) and Voile Rouge (Encosta De Lago).

“We spent a lot of time going through the catalogue and looking for those really good, fast mares that we think will make good broodmares,” Harron said.

Wednesday 31 May 2017 Harron Grabs Elite Fillies

“Speed and precocity is a big thing for us and how we select. After that we then look for good looks and she was a beauty. I think we will do well with her so I’m delighted to get her.”

Duncan Grimley of Glastonbury Farms said Petits Filous was a quality mare who deserved to feature in the top lots sold yesterday.

“Given the market, we had just under a $1,000,000 reserve on her and there were three people on her at $1,000,000,” Grimley told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She sold fantastically well and she is a beautiful mare with a great temperament and I am sure they will be happy with her.

“She is free of Danehill, so that appeals to a lot of people obviously because most of the obvious stallions in the country have Danehill somewhere in their pedigree. She was one of those jewels that come along every now and then.”

Ciaron Maher Racing purchased Petits Filous for $65,000 from the draft of her breeder Emirates Park at the 2014 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. She went on to win five her her ten starts and $365,850 in prize money with her biggest victory coming in the Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m).

Scarlet Rain Makes $950,000

Harron also purchased Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner

Scarlet Rain (Manhattan Rain), who won four of her eight starts for co-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, for $950,000 on behalf of Belinda Bateman.

Catalogued as Lot 1660, the Widden Stud-consigned Scarlet Rain was a supplementary entry for the sale and is by the same sire as this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner She Will Reign and is the only foal to race out of city-winning mare Double Ranga (Exceed And Excel).

Double Ranga is a half-sister to Macau stakes winner Happy Forever (Commands) and Gold Coast Bracelet (Listed, 1800m) winner Super Lacuna (Grand Lodge). Scarlet Rain’s sister was sold by Arrowfield Stud for $360,000 to RIFA Mustang Pty Ltd at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Harron said Scarlet Rain fitted the breeding model being employed by Bateman being a well-performed sprinting juvenile.

“The Darby team picked her out and have done a great job with her,” Harron said.

“She is absolutely beautiful and can be bred to any stallion. She had really good speed and was really precocious, so she fits in really well. She has been purchased for Belinda Bateman and she fits in really well to her broodmare band.”

McEvoy echoed Harron’s comments, believing Scarlet Rain had all the qualities to be a top-class broodmare.

“She was a speed machine who was a brilliant two-year-old, which is what Australian racing is all about,” McEvoy told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We are thrilled for Darby Racing, who bought and syndicated the mare, to achieve the result that they did in the sales ring.”

James Harron Bloodstock purchased two lots yesterday for a total spend of $2,100,000, finishing the day as the third leading purchaser behind China Horse Club and Newstar Bloodstock.

Stonestreet Farm Adds To Broodmare BandUS breeder Stonestreet Farm also made a strong play to increase its

Australian breeding arm by securing two high-priced lots on Day One of the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

Owner Barbara Banke’s agent John Moynihan secured the joint fourth-top lot, four-year-old mare Catch A Fire (Sebring), for $950,000 and also paid $800,000 for Group Three winner Thyme For Roses (Redoute’s Choice), who formed part of US investor Jon Kelly’s dispersal.

Catch A Fire is a sister to VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner and Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Seaburge (Sebring), and she won three of her 19 starts, including the 2016 Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), for prize money of $248,560.

Catch A Fire, who was consigned by Bhima Thoroughbreds as agent for her owners headed by syndicator Wylie Dalziel Racing, was catalogued as Lot 674. She was a $40,000 purchase by Higgins and Dalziel Racing at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is expected to remain in Australia and go to stud this season, but a stallion is yet to be determined.

“She has a great pedigree and is a beautiful filly. She was a really, really good racehorse and we are happy to get her,” Moynihan said.

“We have to talk to Barbara but there is a good chance she will probably stay here to be bred in Australia.

“With the level these horses have won at and the fact they're really good looking individuals, means they are the kind of horses we have had success with at home producing nice horses. So we hope that trend will continue here.”

Wednesday 31 May 2017 Stonestreet Farm Adds To Broodmare Band

Bhima Thoroughbred’s Mike Fleming said the strength of the 2017 yearling market was flowing through to the broodmare sales.

“There has been a lot of good strong completion on those good well performed mares,” Fleming said.

“It just shows how well the market is holding up off the back of good yearlings sales and everyone reinvesting in mares and it's great for the industry.”

Bhima Thoroughbreds were the second leading vendor by aggregate having sold 12 of the 14 lots they offered for $4,120,500 at an average of $348,375.

Catch A Fires’s dam, the Widden Stud-consigned Polska (Encosta De Lago), who is catalogued as Lot 1504, will be offered in foal to Sebring (More Than Ready) on Thursday. She is a daughter of the Group One winner La Volta who produced four winners from nine foals to race.

Thyme For Roses Tops Kelly DispersalThyme For Roses, who was trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian

Bott, is a daugher of Group Three winner and Magic MIllions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Augusta Proud (More Than Ready) and is another filly bound for Stonestreet Farm’s breeding operation.

Consigned by Arrowfield Stud as Lot 633, she was bought by Moynihan for $800,000.

She was originally purchased for $460,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Broadwater Thoroughbreds draft. She raced six times for two wins including the VRC Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and earned $139,275 in prize money. of the dual Grade One winner Mercedes Won (Air Forbes Won). “She is a beautiful mare and she is by Redoute's Choice, who needs

no introduction,” Moynihan said. “He's a tremendous broodmare sire both here and abroad. She looks

like a great young mare who can produce really pretty horses.“We bought her as a breeding prospect and I would say that's what

we will stick with. We will probably keep her here but we will decide.”Daughters of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) have to date produced 58

stakes winners headed by the Group One winners Sacred Falls, Zoustar, Pasadena Girl, The Mission, Stay With Me and Inference.

Another daughter of Redoute’s Choice sold on behalf of Kelly yesterday was the Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained three-year-old Extra Olives, who was runner up in the Vanity Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on 18 February. She has to date raced 14 times for four wins and three placings with prize money of $128,095.

Catalogued as Lot 700 as a racing and breeding proposition, she was bought by Newstar Bloodstock for $460,000.

Extra Olives was originally purchased by Lee Freedman and Kelly for $500,000 from the draft of Arrowfield Stud at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is out of the dual winner Line Honours (Hussonet), a daughter of the multiple Group One winner Alinghi (Encosta De Lago).

Slumber Party Set For Capitalist

Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Capitalist (Written Tycoon), who will stand his first season at Newgate Farm in 2017, will cover the stakes-placed filly Slumber Party (Snitzel) later this year after she was purchased for $800,000 yesterday.

Runner up in the B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), Slumber Party was purchased by Paul Moroney Bloodstock on behalf of Sir Owen Glenn‘s Go Bloodstock from Kelly’s dispersal consignment.

Catalogued as Lot 621 the former Waterhouse and Bott-trained Slumber Party will board at Newgate Farm with the remainder of Go Bloodstock’s broodmare band, which numbers about 30.

Moroney said his and Sir Owen’s team had scoured the catalogue looking for a suitable mare to send to Capitalist.

“She was a filly we really had our hearts set on buying. We were right at the high end of the budget, but we played it right and pinned it on the tail,” Moroney said.

“Sir Owen's bloodstock manager Geoff Roan secured a nomination to Capitalist and we came here specifically to find a mare for him.

“Being by who she is by, there aren't many stallions she can go to, but with Capitalist being a son of Written Tycoon, she can go to him. She is a Group performer at two, he was a Golden Slipper and a Magic Millions winner, so it will be speed over speed.

“That's what Sir Owen wants to do, breed for the Australian market and she will fit into his broodmare band.”

Newgate Farm’s Henry Field told ANZ Bloodstock News that Capitalist would cover an elite book of mares this year, with Slumber Party a high-quality addition to the list.

“Capitalist has got an extraordinary book of high-class mares and Slumber Party will fit right in with the pointy end,” Field said.

“She will board at Newgate, which we are really excited about, and she

will be a great mare for Capitalist. We stand Criterion for Sir Owen Glenn and his high-class mares. (Go Bloodstock) deals in very high quality and they are partners with us in Russian Revolution.”

The fourth of Kelly’s fillies sold yesterday was Lot 685, winning and city-placed three-year-old filly by Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Dancing Hare. Trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, Dancing Hare has not raced since finishing unplaced in the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Randwick on 1 April.

She was bought by James Bester Bloodstock for $90,000.

Samara Dancer Destined For SebringWidden Stud and agent David Lucas purchased the Phillip Stokes-

trained Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Samara Dancer, a daughter of Yarraman Park’s Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), for $825,000.

Offered by Sledmere Stud, the three-year-old filly is likely to be covered by Widden Stud stallion Sebring (More Than Ready) later this year. Catalogued as Lot 1659, she won twice from nine starts and won $185,000 in prize money.

Out of Ennerdale (Singspiel), a half-sister to Listed winner Copeland (Generous), Samara Dancer is one of four winners for her dam, including Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Eclair Big Bang (Savabeel). Later racing in Hong Kong as Almababy, Eclair Big Bang was also trained by Stokes.

Ryan McEvoy, of Widden Stud, said Samara Dancer had the precocity and race performance as a two-year-old who would breed a highly commercial yearling.

“She was a very talented filly who has done her job on the racetrack,” McEvoy said.

“We bought her with Sebring in mind and that is likely where she will head this season. He is doing a great job and is an excellent match for Samara Dancer.”

Burke Bloodstock Fillies Make Impact

The Burke Bloodstock-consigned Group Two winner Miss Gunpowder (Pendragon) and Mousai (Fastnet Rock), a three-year-old half-sister to Group One winner and Coolmore Stud stallion Starspangledbanner (Choisir), were sold for $700,000 and $870,000 respectively.

Vinery Stud purchased Miss Gunpowder, who was catalogued as Lot 750, and she could remain in training with Lindsay Park for another season instead of heading to stud.

A Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 2, 1400m) winner, the rising five-year-old mare was runner-up at her last start in the SAJC Proud Miss Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Morphettville on 20 May.

“She is still in good form, so we will weigh up where we go from here,” Vinery Stud’s Adam White told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She is just a gorgeous mare, a great mover, and probably the best mover on the complex really, and she's got the race track performance on the board.

“Anything from now is just more of an upside. We will let the dust settle first of all and speak with the trainer and get their feedback. She is still only a young mare, so we will make that call whether to race her on in the next few days.”

White said Miss Gunpowder’s pedigree allowed her to be mated with a number of Australia’s premier stallions.

She is out winning US-bred mare Forever Rafter (Delineator), herself a half-sister to Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Absolute Glam (Snowland) and Listed winner and Group One-placed Nobby Snip (Snippetson).

“She has a pedigree where she opens up a few options for us,” he said. “We will worry about (what stallion to send her to) if she goes to stud

this season. We do send out a few as well as supporting our own stallions, and she matches up with quite a few.”

Burke said the price realised by Miss Gunpowder was well above the reserve set.

“We were pretty confident going into the sale that there was going to be plenty of competition on her,” Burke told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She probably exceeded our expectations by a little bit and I am very happy to see that Vinery bought her. I believe she is going to train on and I wish them all the best for her.“

Catalogued as Lot 755, the Burke Bloodstock-consigned Mousai made a winning debut for Lindsay Park at Seymour on 27 April. Out of the stakes-placed mare Gold Anthem (Made Of Gold), she was purchased by Coolmore Stud for $700,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and raced in a Coolmore partnership with Seymour Bloodstock.

Yesterday, Seymour Bloodstock acquired the filly outright for $870,000.Burke said Mousai had the potential to progress through her grades and would

appreciate stepping up in distance having won over 1200 metres on debut.“Mousai, with her pedigree, wouldn't be out of place in any broodmare

paddock in the world and the person who bought her was very keen to buy her and again there was strong competition on her,” Burke said.

“There is every expectation that if she can get over a bit of ground she can get black type.”

Bester Snaps Up Take PrideThe former Murray Johnson-trained Group Two winner of three races

Take Pride (Reward For Effort) was yesterday secured by agent James Bester for $550,000 and is set to be covered by Yarraman Park’s I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) this year,

Catalogued as Lot 629, Take Pride was consigned by Yarraman Park on behalf of her owners and the price surpassed connections’ expectations.

Take Pride is by Chatswood Stud’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) stallion Reward For Effort and she is out of winning mare Shabtis (Elusive Quality), a half-sister to Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Mummify (Jeune) and stake-placed Medusa Miss (Henny Hughes) and Byzantine (Elusive Quality), the dam of Group Three winner Ottoman (Exceed And Excel).

Bester told ANZ Bloodstock News that his clients were looking for a suitable mare to send to I Am Invincible.

“Obviously she had two-year-old performance, she had speed, I liked her pedigree and, most of all, I liked her physique,” Bester told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She has been bought for a partnership to be married to I Am Invincible. She is just the sort of mare that could do well with I Am Invincible and go back through the ring one day for a lovely price. My client was particularly keen on a mare that could go back to him.”

Yarraman Park’s Harry Mitchell said the price tag was a terrific return for Take Pride’s owner Peter Murray.

“She is a lovely Group-winning mare who was nice and fast. She sold very well and he will be happy with that and it all worked out very well,” Mitchell told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She is by an Exceed And Excel line stallion in Reward For Effort who won a Blue Diamond. He's a stallion who has done a good job. I think the mare was entitled to sell well and she did.”

Record Trade On Day One

Day One of the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale set a new benchmark for any auction held by the company, with 255 lots sold for an aggregate of $44,916,500 at an average of $176,143.

The median price was $95,000, while the clearance rate was 85 per cent. As well as three horses selling for more than $1,000,000, there were 23 fillies and mares who sold for $500,000 or more.

Magic Millions managing director Vin Cox was ecstatic with the Day One results, but suggested opportunities for buyers remained plentiful with three days of selling remaining.

"We're sitting on a gross just under $45,000,000, which I think is a record day's gross for Magic Millions at any sale," Cox said.

"That is a staggering figure is anyone's language. We are just delighted, obviously with the quality of horses we offered today and the competition was here from all parts of the globe.

"It's been a very rewarding day all round. I think what really stood out was the competition right throughout the day.

"We are sitting on a clearance rate of 85 per cent which is just fantastic particularly when you are offering 300 mares."

Day Two will start at 10am today, with Lots 908 to 1217 to be offered.

Australia

O’Shea To Return To RandwickFormer Godolphin Australia head trainer John O’Shea is set to rejoin the trainers ranks at Randwick. The Australian Turf Club (ATC) announced yesterday that O’Shea, who was recently replaced at Godolphin by James Cummings, has been allocated stables at Randwick, while the ATC also confirmed discussions with Anthony and Edward Cummings over the future of Leilani Lodge stable were ongoing. “John O’Shea is a proven Group One trainer and we believe he will be a strong addition to the training ranks at Royal Randwick,” ATC executive general manager of racing services and membership James Heddo said. “We are also talking with Anthony and Edward Cummings to see if it is practical for them to move into Leilani Lodge or remain in their current stables.’’ Swap To Suit KenednaDarren Weir believes the switch of venue from Eagle Farm to Doomben has boosted Kenedna’s (Not A Single Doubt) chance of winning the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) on Saturday. The filly took out The Magic Millions Roses (registered as The Roses) (Gr 2, 2000m) at Doomben on 20 May and Weir feels the reduced 2200 metre trip is in her favour, though he has some reservations over the track conditions which are currently rated a Soft 5. "It probably helps her I would say because she's won there and instead of it being 2400 metres, it's 2200 metres which is not a massive step (up)," Weir told Racing.com. "The only little concern I would have is that (jockey) Johnny (Allen) said that she never really handled the track at all the other day (in The Roses), even though she won.” Cummings Considers Derby For IconJames Cummings in considering a tilt at the

Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m) with Prized Icon (More Than Ready) on 10 June. The dual Group One-winning colt’s last victory came in the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington in the spring and he was last seen dropping out to finish 11th in the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2200m) at Eagle Farm on a Heavy 8 track last Saturday. The three-year-old is reported to be fine after that run, and Cummings could turn him out again with the $600,000 race now set to be run at Doomben. Derby Aim For Flying FredThe Evan and JJ Rayner-trained Flying Fred (Fully Fledged) will bid to secure a start in the Queensland Derby with victory over 2200 metres at Ipswich today. The gelding was narrowly beaten into second over 1600 metres at the Sunshine Coast at his last start, and JJ Rayner said he will need to win today to earn a tilt at the Group One on Saturday week. "He's still in the Queensland Derby, but he would have to win to have any chance of making it," Rayner, who trains with her father Evan, said. "He's stepping up to 2200 metres and Larry Cassidy will be riding him. He's still green and he had no luck in the running (last time) he should have won really.” Connections Happy With Melody Belle Melody Belle (Commands) has reportedly pulled up well following her convincing victory in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at the weekend. The Jamie Richards and Stephen Autridge-trained filly beat Taking Aim (Choisir) by four and three quarter lengths in the Group Two at Eagle Farm and is on course for a tilt at the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on 10 June. “We couldn't be happier with her," John Galvin, director of owners Fortuna Syndications, said. "She will have a quiet couple of days through to the end of the week and then the training team will start to prepare her for the J J Atkins Saturday week."

Morning Brief

No J J Atkins For Easy Go Easy WinLightly raced two-year-old Easy Go Easy Win (Savabeel) will now head to Hong Kong and not contest the J J Atkins Stakes at Doomben on Saturday week. The gelding, who had been prepared by Randwick-based John Sargent to finish placed on each of his three career starts, will instead continue his career in Hong Kong with trainer John Moore. Easy Go Easy Win had been rated a $13 chance for the J J Atkins Stakes in the pre-post betting with CrownBet. He was a $380,000 purchase by George Moore Bloodstock from the draft of Waikato Stud at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Danish Twist To CoughlanNewcastle trainer Kris Lees has confirmed that Danish Twist (Dane Shadow) is set to take her chance in the Helen Coughlan Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben on Saturday. The Group Three-winning five-year-old mare, who finished 13th in the Coolmore Legacy (registered as Queen Of The Turf Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick at her last start in April, will tackle the $100,000 Listed race ahead of a tilt at the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) on 24 June. Preferment Uncertain StarterA decision on the soon-to-be retired Preferment’s (Zabeel) participation in the P J O’Shea Stakes (Gr 2, 2200m) at Doomben will be made today. The multiple Group One winner heads eight nominations for Saturday’s $200,000 race and pleased trainer Chris Waller in a workout at the Gold Coast yesterday. "We're going to make a decision on him on Wednesday morning," Waller told Racing.com. "He'll either be retired before the race or after the race. Things just haven't gone right for him in the past 12 months. He's still working well, I was happy with his gallop this morning, but I've got to speak to the owners to see if they do want to run him once more before being retired."

Derryn To Stradbroke

Derryn (Hinchinbrook) will be trained towards a tilt at the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m) at Doomben on Saturday week. The Lindsay Park-trained three-year-old, who took out the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (registered as the Royal Sovereign Stakes) (Gr 2, 1200m) earlier this preparation, ran sixth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday. With the $1,500,000 feature now switched to Doomben, connections will run the colt again with Craig Williams booked to take the ride. Impending To DoombenThe Godolphin-raced Impending (Lonhro) could also take his chance in the Stradbroke Handicap on 10 June. The Group Two-winning colt finished fourth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup at his last start, and provided the weather stays fine in Brisbane and the track at Doomben continues to dry, the Darren Beadman-trained three-year-old is likely to tackle the Group One. With Black Heart Bart’s (Blackfriars) withdrawal from the race expected, Impending is likely to carry 52.5 kilograms for jockey Corey Brown. Spell For Secret AgendaMick Price has decided to spell Secret Agenda

(Not A Single Doubt) rather than tackle the Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben on Saturday week. The four-year-old mare won the UBET Classic (registered as the Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville on 6 May before running fourth in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) a fortnight later at her next start. Caulfield trainer Price confirmed yesterday that Secret Agenda will be given a break ahead of a spring campaign. Junglized To Back Up At RosehillLast start Canberra winner Junglized (Snitzel) is set to back up over 1200 metres at Rosehill on Saturday. The two-year-old colt, who was switched from Gerald Ryan to the Hawkesbury yard of Brad Widdup earlier this month, made all the running to win over 1080 metres on Friday and will be turned out again this weekend. "It's a big jump to Saturday company," Widdup said. "But he's come through the race at Canberra really well and if he doesn't run on Saturday there isn't another suitable race for him until 24 June. We'll claim with him and we've got Sydney's leading apprentice (Andrew Adkins) so that will help." Acatour Entered To TrialThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Acatour (Sebring) has been entered to barrier trial at Randwick on Friday. The three-year-old, who took out ATC Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Randwick on 1 April, is set to step out against seven rivals over 1050 metres in heat three. The colt will face stablemate and dual Group Three winner Gold Symphony (Reward For Effort), Godolphin-raced stakes placegetter Grunderzeit (Street Cry) and Coolmore-owned

filly Peaceful Sea (Fastnet Rock). Click here to view the Randwick barrier trial fields for Friday. Ugo Foscolo Nears Return To WorkGroup One-winning three-year-old Ugo Foscolo (Zacinto) will soon return to work in preparation for a spring campaign. The gelding won the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) for trainer Stephen Marsh in November but finished last of eight runners in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at his first start for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in March. "He's enjoyed a slow build-up with four weeks at Bell View Park Stud and he'll be back in the stables this week," part-owner Kevin Hickman's racing manager Jonathan Scully said. "Obviously, we will be looking at the Melbourne spring with him and we'll wait and see whether he has a run or two in Sydney first." King’s Troop To Taunton Vale Stud The Chris Gangemi-trained King’s Troop (Redoute’s Choice) has been retired to stand at Taunton Vale Stud in Western Australia. The four-year-old, whose dam is a half-sister to leading stallions Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), finished second in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill last season. “We are so excited and grateful to be given the opportunity to stand a three-quarter brother to Snitzel in King’s Troop,” Taunton Vale manager Ken Johnston said. “He will sire precocious two year-olds that will train on. He’s an athletic type with a very strong stallion pedigree and Hinchinbrook ensures the family is going from strength to strength.” King’s Troop will stand for a fee of $2,750 (inc GST).

Melbourne Cup Tour AnnouncedThe Victorian Racing Club (VRC) announced 31 destinations for the annual Melbourne Cup Tour at an event at Macedon Lodge yesterday. The trophy will visit towns and cities in each state in Australia, as well as Christchurch, Stratford and Auckland in New Zealand, before returning to Flemington ahead of the race on 7 November. “The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour celebrates the stories intrinsically linked to the Cup and its contribution to Australia’s cultural and historical heritage,” VRC chairman Amanda Elliott said. “Since the Tour began in 2003, we have delighted in bringing communities together in the shared history and magic of this extraordinary phenomenon.” New Acton Surface A SuccessJockeys and trainers were full of praise for Canberra’s new Acton synthetic racing surface. After its first meeting on the track on Friday Canberra Racing Club CEO Peter Stubbs said the feedback had been ‘outstanding.’ “We were always confident that we would produce a quality surface,” Stubbs says. “We undertook considerable research and while completing the project took a little longer than we anticipated the results have been well worth it.” The synthetic surface will be used for racing throughout the winter months providing better track ratings than the course proper and allowing time for it to be renovated in readiness for spring racing.

Addictive Habit RetiredAddictive Habit (Colombia) has been retired from racing after he suffered a tendon injury in the Prime Minister’s Cup (Listed, 1400m) at the Gold Coast on 6 May. Cambridge trainer Lee Somervell said the seven-year-old, who won the 2015 Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) at Te Rapa, had suffered two previous tendon injuries and the decision had been taken to bring his racing career to an end. Addictive Habit won 11 of his 40 career starts, including a Group One and three Group Two successes, for prize money earnings of $702,270.

Gypsy Fair To Back UpTrainer Allan Sharrock has said that Group Three winner Gypsy Fair (Falkirk) will likely back-up her recent win over 1400 metres at Trentham last Saturday when she lines up in Saturday’s A G Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1590m) at Wanganui. The mare landed her first stakes race this season when she won the Marton Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) and also ran fourth in the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on 21 May. “There’s not many options for a mare like her at this time of year, apart from the Tauranga Classic at weight-for-age at the end of this month,” Sharrock told www.theinformant.co.nz. “She’s likely to be sold as a broodmare at the end of the season, so this is a nice chance to pick up a little bit more black type before that.” First Group One To Be Renamed The first Group One race of the season, which has been known for the last six years as the Makfi Challenge Stakes, will be re-named the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) next term, with the race due to take place at Hawke’s Bay on 2 September. Dual Group One winner Tarzino (Tavistock) will join the Westbury Stud roster this season, which is good addition for the stud with Makfi (Dubawi) not shuttling this year, following his sale to Japan last October. “We are thrilled with the opportunity to have one of Westbury’s newest stallions affiliated with the much anticipated race day in Hawke’s Bay,” Westbury Stud’s general manager Russell Warwick told www.theinformant.co.nz. Allan To Return To Race RidingJockey Tony Allen will make his return to race riding at Woodville tomorrow in a bid to reach the milestone of 1000 winners with his tally currently on 996. Allan worked with horses in Japan for a decade after leaving New Zealand in 2005. More recently, the 50-year-old spent 18 months working for leading Sydney trainers Peter and Paul Snowden. He will be based at Levin and he has been booked to ride one horse tomorrow, Miss Moneypenny (Per Incanto) for trainer Sylvia Kay. Rider Horse Group Finalist For Export AwardInner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry (NZ) has been announced as a finalist in the 2017

ExportNZ Awards. The horse racing business founded by Lang Lin, commonly known as Mr Wolf, joins five other export companies in the NZ$1,000,0000 - NZ$5,000,000 export revenue category. Rider Horse NZ has exported more than 1100 horses to China since its inception in 2012. The company currently has thirty racehorses in work in New Zealand and breeds from 100 mares and it’s most successful horses has been Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor), who won the 2015 Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and the 2015 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). The awards will be presented at Sky City Convention Centre on 29 June.

Nash Rawiller Out For SeasonIn a bid to fully recover from dislocating his shoulder in a fall at Sha Tin on 17 April, jockey Nash Rawiller has said he will not ride again until next season. Rawiller, who also fractured his vertebra and ankle in the fall from Mr Oriole (Nadeem) in race over 1200 metres, had hoped to return in June but shelved those plans after feeling he had not fully recovered. “I’ve decided it’s better not to risk it for the sake of coming back for a few weeks when it isn’t quite right and then find that I’m in trouble with it down the track,” Rawiller told the South China Morning Post. “I have to think about the rest of my career – the next eight years, not just the next eight weeks.” Nunes On Well DoneJockey Manoel Nunes is looking forward to being reunited with the David Kok-trained Well Done (Falkirk) in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (SGP Gr 1, 1800m) at Kranji on Sunday, having not ridden the five-year-old gelding since April last year. Nunes has ridden the Singapore Derby (SGP Gr 1, 2000m) four times, winning once and finishing third on the other three occasions. “I galloped him last Saturday and last Wednesday and will gallop him tomorrow. He is as usual very professional, he’s a very smart horse and does whatever you ask him to do,” said Nunes. “I am very happy with the way he is going. David does not rush his horses, and he’s done a great job to bring him back to this level of fitness.”

War Affair Set For QEIITrainer Bruce Marsh is quietly confident that War Affair (O’Reilly) can run well in this weekend’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kranji. The 2014 Singapore Horse Of The Year will be racing second up having dead-heated with Storm Troops (Orpen) in the Saas Fee Stakes (SGP Gr 3, 1400m) first up this season. “He’s pulled up great after the Saas Fee. I’m very happy with him going into the Queen Elizabeth II Cup,” said Marsh. “I would say he has maintained his condition, though. It’s a quality field, but the fact he has only 58 kilograms on his back and is on level terms with the rest is a huge advantage.” Glyn Schofield & Browne To Ride At QEII MeetingJockeys Glyn Schofield and Damian Browne have been granted permission to ride at Singapore’s meeting at Kranji on Sunday, a meeting which features the Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Schofield will ride Newlands (Mugharreb)

for trainer Stephen Gray while Browne will be on board the Cliff Brown-trained Laughing Gravy (Primus) in the local Group One. Click here to view the weight for the QEII Cup.

Capri Well Supported In DerbyAfter a band of rain hit Epsom at the weekend, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Capri (Galileo) has been supported in the betting for the Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) on Saturday, with the Group Two winner’s odds slashed from around 25/1 to as short as 9/1 after the five-day confirmation stage yesterday. The three-year-old colt won last season’s Beresford Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at the Curragh on soft ground and that form seems to have attracted the attention of the punters. Leon Blanche of BoyleSports, whose firm have him as a current 14/1 shot told the Racing Post: "With a horse like Capri, whose form is

solid without being spectacular, we feel here that if there is any 'soft' in the description come Saturday it would certainly aid his chances.” Almanzor Set For York StakesLast season’s European Champion three-year-old Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) looks set to make his seasonal reappearance in the York Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f) on 29 July before being aimed for a tilt at the Juddmonte International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2.5f) at York three weeks later. The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained four-year-old was struck down with a virus last month and was intended to make his comeback in the Prix La Coupe (Gr 3, 2000m) in June but the race will come too soon according to Rouget. “He could possibly go to York. The plan is to prepare him for July. If he runs well, then hopefully he’ll go back there for the International,” Rouget said. “The horse is OK now, but we have two months’ work to have him very well.”

It has also, just last week, opened an uphill sand training track which has been designed more to replicate working in the sand dunes rather than providing a galloping track.

The on-course stables, leased from the club, are home to Robbie Griffiths, Robbie Laing and Greg Eurell along with training combination of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young. A new block, which will be occupied by Enver Jusufovic, will be opened within a fortnight and that will take the number of horses trained on-site to 257.

“We have the room and desire to continue expanding the on-course stabling facilities and will eventually cater for a further 500 horses,” Bainbridge said.

The training centre already hosts 162 trainers who work as many as 850 horses each morning and, aside from those on course, has 150 odd horses walked on from the independent stables of Mick Kent, Cindy Alderson, Shea Eden and Nikki Burke which are adjacent to the training complex.

It was Kent who, unbeknown to Bainbridge, took upon himself to adorn the new uphill sand track with a banner marking it as Mt. Bainbridge.

Around 1400 metres of sand trails lead to the heavy sand, rise which allows horses to work in either direction uphill for either 140 or 250 metres.

“The feedback’s been very good from trainers and their assistance led by local Robbie Griffiths has been instrumental in the outcome achieved.’ said Bainbridge of the track which has been 12 months in the making and which required tonnes of clean fill which was provided free of charge by a local land developer. It’s replaced the sand hills between the training centre and racecourse which could no longer be used because of public access issues.

“Thoroughbred racing is the biggest individual industry here - in the biggest municipality in Victoria,” Bainbridge said.

Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge is committed to developing Cranbourne as the pre-eminent training and racing

centre in the state. Progress has been swift over the past three years and there’s more to come with a 300 room hotel; seven theatre cinema complex; state of the art veterinary hospital; 1000 seat convention centre; equestrian centre

with a 3000 seat indoor arena; industry training centre; horse pool upgrades and drainage works on the grass training track all on the schedule.

In October 2014, the club opened it’s $4,000,0000 grandstand which Bainbridge says rivals any ‘city’ track facility. Last August, stage one of the $6,500,000 on-course stables complex was unveiled.

That municipality is the City of Casey with a population of c. 250,000 which is two to three times greater than it’s inner city or nearer suburban counterparts. It’s 54 kilometres from the Melbourne GPO and can hardly be subscribed as ‘country’ or ‘provincial’ as was certainly the case when the first race meeting was conducted in 1867 or even in 1978 when the great Manikato (Manihi) won on his debut at the track.

That status may well change. The track, of course, also hosts harness and greyhound racing and with 118 meetings per annum it is the busiest racing centre in the country. Next season, the harness racing will have metropolitan status and the hope is that might - one day - also be the case with thoroughbred racing.

Bainbridge said: “Like Mornington, given our proximity to the CBD, we are essentially a city club and we’d hope that would eventually be recognised in terms of our racing status.

“We would hope that we would be favourably assessed in terms of prize money increases just as Moonee Valley has been funded to offer increased night prize money above basic midweek levels. Cranbourne has been an integral part of the success of night racing with our turnover up 9.5 per cent, for the night racing season just concluded.

Bainbridge foresees a $1,000,000 dollar race at the track which might be a $1,000,000 dollar Cranbourne Cup, under lights, with the winner ballot exempt from the Caulfield Cup.

“Alternatively we could look to develop a different race which might be billed as a Cranbourne Millions. I’d hope this could happen within three years with the support of RVL and CRV. It might be specific to Cranbourne or could at least begin with a $1,000,000 dollar race which might rotate among outer metropolitan or major country clubs,’ he said.

The club is debt free and well poised to begin the major developments, outlined above, in conjunction with state and local government and private investors.

“We have plans, and zoning approval, for the hotel which would surround our existing entertainment facility Trios. We’ve worked on this with Major Projects Victoria which is now known as Development Victoria.

“Other initiatives including the cinema complex, convention centre and veterinary hospital would be driven by $110,000,000 of private investment. Much of this would benefit the community at large and more specific developments like the veterinary hospital would be very valuable for the racing industry in the south east of the state,” Bainbridge said.

At the same time, the club will not lose sight of it’s core training facility with drainage and pool upgrades planned along with the creation of a chute to allow 1000 metres reverse direction,

grass trials. “We’d envisage having 1000 horses on track eventually,’ Bainbridge said.

The club also has land adjacent to the racecourse car-park which might well suit a major trainer wanting to re-locate from another facility and there’s little doubt a place at Cranbourne will be much sought after if any of the inner-city training facilities are closed.

While there is no specific time frame on the various developments outlined for the track, the process has extended well beyond board-room discussion and are considered ‘very real’
