about fremantle arts centreFremantle Arts Centre (FAC), one of Western Australia’s major arts organisations and best-loved local facilities, offers a rich program of exhibitions, residencies, courses, music and events.

FAC is an ambitious organisation with high quality programming recognised on a local, national and international level. Housed in a convict built neo-Gothic style building from 1860, and set in beautiful gardens, FAC is also a fascinating heritage site. FAC’s shop, FOUND at Fremantle Arts Centre, specialises in WA hand-made gifts and books and FAC’s café is licensed.

Whether looking at an exhibition, selecting a gift in FOUND, enrolling in a course, listening to music or simply relaxing in the grounds (with free wifi), there are numerous ways visitors can enjoy FAC.

We are proud to be presenting Soft Soft Loud: The Americas (page 19) with the 2012 Perth Festival. This year SSL is a single outdoor concert of exhilarating recent music from The Americas, with WA’s finest musicians in ensemble. Tickets are strictly limited.

Also in the 2012 Perth Festival, FAC is Major Presenting Partner in IASKA’s spaced: art out of place (page 4), a brilliant exhibition of 16 regional projects from 24 Australian and international artists.

FotoFreo, the City of Fremantle Photography Festival returns in March with FAC again the Festival’s flagship gallery. WASO will be a spectacular highlight of Courtyard Music, our free Sunday afternoon summer music program.

spaced: art out of place iaska’s inaugural biennial event of socially engaged art

Explore the relationship between globalisation and local identity with imaginative and stimulating works in sculpture, photography, painting, installation and multi-media. The culmination of a two-year cycle of residencies, this ground-breaking project involved 22 Australian and international artists spending time in 16 regional Western Australian communities to consider their social and physical environments. The results are surprising and provocative.

Portrait of India Group Exhibition

There is an intimacy about portraits that speaks of individuals but yet they can encompass a larger view of India and Indians.CurAtor deVIKA dAulet-SInGh

Portrait of India examines the nature of current Indian photography through the eyes of six contemporary portrait photographers. Curated by Devika Daulet-Singh (India).

The exhibition includes the work of established Indian photographers Anup Mathew Thomas, Dileep Prakash, Gauri Gill, Ketaki Sheth, Vidura Jang Bahadur and Bharat Sikka.

Devika, and photographers Ketaki Sheth and Bharat Sikka will be at the Festival.

This exhibition compliments My India: Raghu Rai, showing at the WA Maritime Museum. The audio visual projection of young and emerging Indian photographers curated by Sohrab Hura will be shown at the Festival opening at FAC.

Salt | Murray Fredericks (NSW)

Salt is an ongoing series of photographs that encompass the vast and seemingly empty space of Lake Eyre in South Australia. Lake Eyre is a landscape devoid of features – extending out in every direction with its perfectly flat surface and razor sharp horizon. The series commenced in 2003. This exhibition challenges the idea of an Australian landscape.

Taking the Mickey Eric Bridgeman (QLD)

Eric Bridgeman’s photography invariably involves a degree of satire, usually political and fun, with a sense of humour. This exhibition is a selection from recent photographic projects.

FotoFreo is a month long biennial festival of photography that showcases the work of Australian photographers alongside leading photographers from Asia, Europe and North America.

Side x Side presents new artworks by students from Fremantle’s John Curtin College of the Arts, alongside those works from the City’s Collection that inspired them.

John Curtin’s senior students have responded to a previous exhibition Not Dead, a selection of still lives from the City’s Collection.

Side x Side marks a milestone in a successful six year partnership between the City of Fremantle Art Collection and John Curtin , through a program of tutorials, exhibitions on campus and class visits to FAC.

Through this project students are exposed to examples of artworks by Western Australian artists, making the experience and enjoyment of visual arts all the more engaging and relevant.

MHF20 | Mark Howlett Foundation

2011 marks the 20th anniversary and final year of the Mark Howlett Foundation (MHF), a subscriber-based philanthropic group which each year has selected a mid-career artist to support.

MHF20, the group’s final exhibition, will showcase twelve of its participant artists with new work specially commissioned for this celebration. Curated by Andrew Gaynor, MHF20 includes painting, sculpture and ceramics.

MHF20 participant artists: Penny Bovell, Mary Dudin, Susan Flavell, George Haynes, Giles Hohnen, Bevan Honey, Jeremy Kirwan-Ward, Theo Koning, Eveline Kotai, Jane Martin, Trevor Richards and Trevor Vickers.

Farewell Party and Book Launch

MHF hosts a party to mark the official end of the Foundation and celebrate the launch of the MHF book. Written by curator Andrew Gaynor and journalist Victoria Laurie, the publication will be a lavishly presented, fully illustrated account of the Foundation’s history, artists, projects, members and supporters.

Public Art – Six Concept Designs Celebrating Women in Fremantle Invitation for community comment

Visitors are encouraged to comment on six design concepts for a proposed new Fremantle public artwork on the theme of celebrating women in Fremantle.

An informal community group is advocating for a work that redresses the public underrepresentation of women and women artists, as nearly all Fremantle’s monuments and public artworks only celebrate men and men’s achievements.

The City of Fremantle funded and coordinated this design concept phase. The six designs short-listed for exhibition are by artists: Sharyn Egan and Fiona Gavino, Louise Elscot, Judith Forrest, Anne Neil and Olga Cironis, Bridget Norton, and Arif and Audrey Satar.

During the exhibition visitors can record comments and nominate their preferred design.

Artists in residence The Museum of Natural Mystery, directed by David Egan and Patrick Miller, have invited Thomas Jeppe to hold a brief workshop on horse jumping and the nature of obstacles.

Also meet Ola Johannson and Amanda Newall, artists from Stockholm who are working toward a show at FAC in May, and the new Artist Run Initiative recipients Rhinoceros who will have their studio open.

artists to engage in research and development. FAC is committed to supporting local and visiting

artists execute ideas and projects while bringing their work into

public dialogue. The AIR program has nine studios at FAC and two at

the rear of the Moores Building.

Andrew Daly (WA/China) will be producing paintings influenced by the experience of living in China for the last few years. artiSt Studio 8

Anneke de Rooij (WA) is producing a series of avian portraits, working with inlayed pigments on ceramic forms, inspired by observations of FAC’s bird life. artiSt Studio 8

Jackson Eaton (WA) will explore ways of physically representing the passage of time and the role of identity through photographic processes. MooreS Studio 2

Verena Friedrich (Germany) manipulates time-lapse video recordings of living cells to form legible texts sourced from the advertising industry. Produced in conjunction with SymbioticA, Friedrich’s project Cellular Performance deals with notions of the human body being perpetually redefined by science, technology and commercial objectives. Brendan Hutchens (WA) will research and begin to develop a number of documentary series about creative sustainable housing design, and interview based behind-the-scenes video snapshots of artists at work. artiSt Studio 4

Ola Johansson and Amanda Newall (Sweden) will conduct lab-based research in a joint residency with SymbioticA. Their project Projektet looks at social conflict and resolution as it translates from the immune system. The artists will work through performative strategies and types of theatre application shaped and informed by observing viral cellular activity. Loren Kronemyer (USA), inspired by the natural forces of preservation and decay, will transform the studio space into an archaeology lab for the creation of objects that exist outside of traditional time scales. artiSt Studio 1

Richard Lewer (AU/NZ) produces drawing, painting and animation marked by a sceptical humour and a focus on the darker sides of human behaviour, place and social identity. artiSt Studio 6

Jade Markham (WA/NSW) and Lisa Carrie Goldberg (WA/Canada) use sleep as an artistic medium to develop and design a new performance work entitled The Sleep Social. The artists focus on the notion of collective sleep to find ways of materially crossing over to the other world. artiSt Studio 7

Natural Mystery (WA) is directed by artists David Egan and Patrick Miller. Working across exhibitions and residencies as both curators and artists in cooperation with FAC, they will research and develop alternative channels of distribution and communication for the exhibition of contemporary art. artiSt Studio 3

Janet Parker-Smith, Karen Ball, Elizabeth Pozega (NSW) draw on themes of isolation and the human need for communication. The collaborators, in residence at different times with paths crossing briefly, will pursue a daily ritual of making and writing a postcard and then posting it to the members of the collaboration who are absent. artiSt Studio 6

Clare Peake (WA) continues development of mixed media works that extend her current interests in the ways by which knowledge is accumulated and made sense of, in particular through ideas of discovery and exploration. MooreS Studio 1

Tanya Schultz (WA) is developing a new body of mixed-media work first there is a mountain, that investigates the parallels between the illusory nature of imagined worlds, and the promise and allure of material culture. MooreS Studio 1

Artist Run Initiative

Every year FAC invites applications for an Artist Run Initiative. The successful applicant is given studio space, mentorship, access to FAC resources and support.

The inaugural recipients of FAC’s ARI residency are Rhinoceros (AU). Rhinoceros, a group of ten artists, will collectively negotiate projects that will exist within the architectural spaces of FAC, on the Internet and in off-site exhibitions over the next 12 months. artiSt Studio 5

Soft Soft Loud: The Americas features numerous Australian premieres in a program of deeply personal reflections on loss and life, from Steve Reich’s harrowing WTC 9/11 to Andy Akiho’s joyous Hadairo, Osvaldo Golijov’s beautiful setting of Christian, Arab and Jewish folk song, culminating with Reich’s uplifting and Pulitzer Prize winning Double Sextet.

The program reflects on a continent’s broad impact, from works which celebrate the hustle and bustle of Mexico City to a sombre and powerful commemoration of 9/11 and New York.

The concert is enhanced by the unique setting of the inner courtyard which contributes to the sense of occasion for both audience and performers.

Academy Award winner and favourite local son Shaun Tan comes to FAC with a collection of never before seen paintings, drawings and sketched video work. Shaun Tan: Suburban Odyssey highlights the relationship between Shaun’s suburban observations, as they began in Perth, and the place they create for his internationally popular illustrated books, short stories and animations.

We don’t need a map: A Martu Experience of the Western Desert is a major project that will explore the distinct visual language of the Martu and their connection to Country. We don’t need a map will include recent paintings, Martu objects, a Pilbara garden, a collaborative animation, other commissioned works and Martu workshops. The project is a partnership of Fremantle Arts Centre, Martumili Artists (Newman) and Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa with support from BHP Billiton.
