Announcing!ONLINE PROGRAM REGISTRATION

We are pleased to announce the launch of online registration for all Pickering Public LIbrary programs that require registration. You no longer need to phone or come into a branch to register for your favourite library events. Simply go to the website at www.picnet.org, choose ‘What’s On’ from the menu, then choose ‘Calendar’. Once on the Calendar page, click on the event of your choice and register. Easy peasy.(Please note, registered programs are marked with an R in the online calendar.)

Kindergarten and Beyond! (3 to 5 years) This hands-on, six week program is designed for parents/caregivers and their children to learn important early literacy skills that will help children to succeed in school. Parents/caregivers will learn fun activities they can do at home with their child to continue the early literacy learning. Parent/caregiver participation is required. Previous attendance at Storytime is recommended. Children must be between the ages of 3 and 5 when registering. Younger siblings of participants cannot be accommodated. Registration is required and begins Monday, January 6 for Session One and Monday, March 17 for Session Two.

March Break Short Story Contest: Mystery (JK to grade 12) “The old woman turned and smiled…” Do you enjoy writing? If so, submit a story for the Library’s March Break Short Story Contest!

Criteria:

• A fully completed entry form must accompany each story

• The theme of the story is mystery and must begin with the line, “The old woman turned and smiled…”

• The story can be no longer than two pages with a font size, if typed, of at least 12 points

• Writers must have their own valid Pickering Public Library card

• Entries will be divided into the following age categories: JK- SK, grades 1 - 3, 4 - 6, 7 - 8, 9 - 12

• Writers are encouraged to submit their story by email to [email protected], or they can drop off their story at any Pickering Public Library branch by March 15

All winning entries will be published on the Library’s website & Facebook page. Winners will be announced on the website, www.picnet.org, on April 4.

Birds Storytime Plus (2 to 5 years)

For Children

Use and Support of the Library is Record-Breaking!

In 2012, the Pickering Public Library experienced record-level use. Over the last year, residents used the Library to: improve their child’s literacy and school success; find a job; research family histories; connect online with family; learn how to blog and tweet; and discover new knowledge and skills through innovative library programs. The Library has helped build valuable skills, social capital, and knowledge in the community – all at a very reasonable cost.

There is a downside to this increased use and efficiency. Increased use has resulted in insufficient space to deliver library programs and services. The need for increased space was identified by a recent study which recommended an increase of 17,000 sq feet to the Central Library. While City Council supports the expansion in principle, this project will have to compete with other City priorities to obtain needed funding.

In addition to space pressures, there are budget pressures. Increased efficiencies, strategic partnerships and tough decisions have allowed the Library to provide excellent,

responsive service to the community within a budget that has not increased in proportion to increased use. At this time, increased use represents a challenge to the Library system.

On behalf of all residents of Pickering, the Library Board faces these challenges and makes decisions that impact the community’s Library services. We encourage all residents to help us make these decisions by letting us know what is important to you and your family. Please take time to attend a Board meeting, send an email, talk to Board members at Library events, or participate in Library focus groups. Pickering residents deserve the excellent library system that they have – help us to keep our library service strong and innovative and one of the best in the province.

Raising Responsible Children Our children live in a world of constantly changing technology and cyber-bullying. Their “heroes” are from the entertainment industry, not the space program. Entitlement seems to have replaced hard work as a road to success. Given all these issues and pressures, parents keep searching for effective ways to help their children learn respect and responsibility, values and character.

Join us for a seminar by Ronald Morrish, educator, international speaker and author of the books, Secrets of Discipline and With All Due Respect. He will challenge you to adopt a positive view of discipline and provide you with a host of practical, common-sense strategies for raising responsible children. You will go home with many great ideas that you can start using the very next day. Registration is required.

Still Life Drawing Do you want to try your hand at drawing and painting? Or are you an experienced artist looking to hone your skills? Still life provides an excellent way to develop skills in drawing from observation. Helal Uddin, a Pickering resident with Bachelor and Masters degrees in Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China, will lead a class that teaches participants about proportion, shading and composition. Using the trademark style of his popular and educational segments on “Consumer Alert”, Pat will discuss consumer protection subjects such as how to protect yourself from scams and how to save money and improve your financial literacy. Building an Ageless MindThe brain, our ability to think and our self-concept are so very important to our individual lives. Dr. William Tippett, from the Psychology Department at Trent University and author of ‘Building and Ageless Mind: preventing and fighting brain aging and disease’, will highlight the best lifestyle strategies to promote brain health. In addition, Dr. Tippett will discuss Alzheimer’s disease, and provide information about how it affects individuals,

ways to protect against it, and alter its course even if it has been diagnosed. Registration is required.
