Letter From The PublisherLetter From The PublisherLetter From The PublisherLetter From The Publisher: Here we are … the beginning of another great year! It’s a time for resolutions—whether losing weight, getting healthy, spending more time with the family… whatever it is, we have you covered! We have some great articles in this issue—a tasty Quinoa recipe from Chef Phoebe, exercise tips from JJ, getting your medical records in order from Ann, planning a family trip from guest writer Kerri, and even creating family resolutions from Kari! Lots of great stuff! PLUS our Birthday Party Central is included! And we’ll be spotlighting birthday party ideas all month on our website! Check it out at www.WhatsUpForKids.com Do you know a parent in another city or state who would benefit from What’s Up For Kids? We will be interviewing new

Editors to start their own online What’s Up For Kids in their community! You can get more details on our website—but this is a great opportunity for a mom or dad look-ing to make a little extra money doing something centered around their kids! Check it out or give me a call! I’d love to discuss it with them! Lastly, it can’t go without acknowledgment. I am completing this magazine the day after the horrific incident in Connecticut. As a mother of 3, I can’t begin to imag-ine the loss of a child, especially in such a horrible way. We have such dreams for our children, we tell them they are safe and secure and yet, people do horrible things. Life is short and in the grand scheme of things and we have very little con-trol—it serves as a reminder to appreciate every day, tell our loved ones how much they mean to us, hug our children a little tighter and be grateful everyday we see the sun rise and set in our wonderful South Bay community! Sending love to all of you!

By Ann Gambrell The new year is a great time for updating information records and health insurance paperwork in shape. Here are the main areas of record keeping.

Personal Medical Records and Medical Insurance Information. Articles on health & medical problems or treatments, clipped from magazines, picked up at your local pharmacy or downloaded from a health web site can be filed under Health Information. Try not to “save” too much here as information is con-stantly updated.

The Medical section should contain medical, dental and vision insurance infor-mation. Active claims should be filed in a separate folder until settled. When updated information comes from your insurance company be sure to discard the outdated booklets.

Keep a separate file folder for each insurance company. Personalize Medical Records with individual folders by labeling with the first name of family mem-bers. Include immunizations, physical exams, labs, pap smears, mammograms, dental records, allergies, etc.

For those family members taking a number of medications, list meds to bring to medical visits as well as to your dentist, gynecologist, etc. Keep a small print version in your wallet for emergency use. Include this medical information in your cell phone as ICE: “In Case of Emergency”, to be accessed by paramedics or emergency hospital personnel.

Birth, death and adoption certificates should be kept in a separate folder labeled Special Records.

Oh, and don't forget a file for your household pets, including immunizations, licensing and boarding information.

Having these files handy will save time, energy and stress. Ann Gambrell is an organizational consultant and speaker available to inform and entertain audiences. Courteous & CoolCourteous & CoolCourteous & Cool A Family Resolution for the New Year!

By Kari Doody

Do you make New Year's resolutions with your kids? Each New Year’s eve my fam-ily and I have a tradition, we sit down and share what each of our resolutions are going to be. This also gives us an opportunity to revisit our list of resolutions that we saved from the previous year, to see what we accomplished and what we didn’t. No matter what your resolutions are, making family new years resolutions is an impor-tant part of family bonding. It’s a time to listen to your kids about what they want to achieve and see how you can support them in their endeavors.

Explain to your children that a resolution is a promise that you make to yourself! Let them know that there are different kinds of resolutions. One sort of resolution has to do with oneself. They might decide to stop eating chips, to try new foods, or to spend less time texting. Other resolutions might involve family or friends. They could resolve to be more patient with their siblings, to be more helpful to mom, or to try to

make new friends. Some resolutions are about school and the outside world, such as getting to class on time, trying for better grades, or not complaining when they lose a game. Whatever their resolution is, if they manage to keep these promises, it will make them feel better about themselves and in turn more confident.

That being said, it's impor-tant that they know not to make wild resolutions that are too difficult to follow. A promise to yourself should not be too hard to keep. This

New Year challenge your family to agree on one family new years resolution-Good luck and happy New Year!

After having three children and sharing stories with other mom’s, she realized that many role models that our children look up to were in the news – and not in a good way. We aren’t born with good manners, they need to be cultivated at a young age and rein-forced throughout young adulthood. Whatever level your child is at, she can help them improve their skills and confidence – and they can have fun doing it with my age appropriate games and activities. By Kerri Zane Every New Year starts with the promise of great new possibilities for you and your family, and 2013 is no exception. I found that there is no better way to ring out the old and bring in the new than a family vacation. And for those of us on the West Coast Hawaii is a very doable five-hour plane ride. This year, for those of us on the West Coast, Hawaii is the destination of choice. There are a host of unique festivi-ties that both parents and children can enjoy. The Sheraton Kona Resort on Big Island has 22 events and activities for you and your family to choose from. Early risers can join the resort’s Cultural Director on a Holoholo Keauhou hike to learn the rich history of Keauhou. Then you can all take a sail aboard a Hawaiian sailing canoe for a cruise along the Kona coastline. Later in the day there are lei-making classes and then you can complete your New Year’s family celebration with a luau dinner and show complete with music, food, dance and a fire knife dance. If you and your kids just can’t stay away from the cold in your bathing suit! The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas in Maui has installed a fully loaded ice-skating rink on its south lawn. The outdoor rink is enhanced by holiday music, fes-tive decor, Christmas lighting...and of course, Santa Claus. Skate rentals are avail-able and include a skate change area complete with rubber mats and seating. Guests and non-guests alike are welcome. My daughters and I are obsessed with dessert and the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani in Waikiki on Oahu is feeding our fancy. Chef Ralf Bauer and his staff worked over 800 hours to craft a 24-foot-wide, 14-foot-tall edible Gingerbread Village. It incorpo-rates 50 pounds of white chocolate and 140 pounds of dark chocolate, 250 gallons of icing, along with a healthy dusting of powdered sugar. Here’s to a Sweet New Year! By Michael Malgeri Ever since our kids were born, my wife has engineered the annual, memorable Malgeri summer vacation adventure, reported in this case, well into the fall. While the early days are remembered for Mikey's FAA viola-tions (disorderly conduct at 35,000 feet while in diapers), subsequent years found us racing through the desert, snorkeling with dolphins, riding an am-phibious vehicle through Boston, and insulting French Canadians for not having English restaurant menus (can you say, "Dominique Malgeri?"). This summer was no exception. After months of careful planning we made it to Bryce and Zion Canyons with a final stop at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. Along the way we saw our talented niece deliver a Tony worthy per-formance in the "Putnam County Spelling Bee," caught an enchanting out-door performance of Aladdin under the desert stars of Ivins, Utah and mar-veled at the Hoover Dam...that is one dang dam! Unfortunately, what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. Case in point is LisaBelle's broken foot (OUCHI!), which, given the choice, she'd have happily left in the wave pool at Mandalay Bay. I contemplated suing the hotel for having water in a pool and fracturing her piggies, but fig-ured bogus lawsuits aren’t good for the soul. When we made it back home the doctor said it would be 6 to 8 weeks before she could resume her 400-meter hurdle workouts. She missed the Olympics but made a 100% recov-ery. If you haven't been to Bryce and Zion, we highly recommend it. You'll walk away singing "Oh beautiful for spacious skies..." and with a wonderful appreciation for our magnificent country. If you haven't been to Vegas, it's definitely worth a trip...just be sure to watch your piggies. Editor’s Note: Along with “On Dad’s Watch” Michael writes a series of books he calls “Bedtime Stories about Capitalism,” which teaches kids about honest profit making. Visit http://www.kids4biz.com. 5 Steps to Making Effective

Weight Loss Resolutions!

By JJ Flizanes Do you always make similar resolutions EVERY year? Do you wonder why you have to keep doing it year after year? Lasting change comes from 5 things:

1. Beliefs; 2. Plan of action; 3. Tools; 4. Support; 5. Accountability Most of us get gung-ho about New Years and say things like “I am going to lose 25 pounds in January” or something crazy like that. Is that possible? It might be but not for most people. But the bigger question is why do you keep making the same resolution every year? Here are 5 Steps to Making, Getting and Keeping your Weight Loss Resolution 1. Set 1 goal in January- not 3. Be realistic and be honest. If you haven’t been working out at all, don’t commit yourself to 5 days at the gym. You set yourself up to fail when you commit to something drastically different than your current habits. Don’t try to tackle it all at one time (there is a reason you aren’t doing it now), just choose ONE! Let’s use taking your vitamins regularly as an example for this. 2. Plan of action- what would make it easier for you to take your supplements every day? Create a strategy that makes sense for you and your schedule. Take them to work? Take them with breakfast? Take them at night before bed? What-ever the plan is write it down. Also, make sure to position this goal (the vitamins) in the place where you know you will remember. If you want to take them at work, take them to work and stick them on your desk. If you want to take them at night, stick them in the place you are right before bed. For me, that would be my night stand OR my computer. 3. Tools- With our example goals of taking vitamins every day, I would classify tools for this as a pill box, baggies, chart or daily log to write down every day what I am taking, etc. I did a heavy metal detox a few years ago and needed to take sup-plements to prepare my tissues for 5-7 days before the cleanse. I made separate baggies for each day with the vitamins I needed to take. There are tools available to help you with any goal. Figure out what yours are and use them. 4. Support- If you want to commit to those vitamins but you have a hard time with discipline, ask a friend or partner to ask you every day. Find someone else who has the same goal and decide to email once a day to check in. I have been playing an “affirmation game” with a friend on the phone for over three years! This ensures that I will do it because we both want the benefits and it makes it more fun! 5. Accountability- In the case of the vitamins, I would announce to someone that this is my goal and this is how I am going to commit to it. I would create a calendar and stick it somewhere other people who live with you can see it. Being accountable to someone else is how we can see our habits and patterns if we are looking. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Is this you? I can help! Bottom line- change one habit at a time- use the 5 steps to create a NEW habit and then move on to the next one. And most importantly- ask for help if you are serious about change. Cookin’ Corner Quinoa Pilaf with Roasted Kale

By Phoebe Schilla January is here and resolutions are starting to kick in! Time to start eating more healthfully, perhaps? My new favorite quinoa pilaf packs a wallop of nutrition and antioxidants in every bite. It’s rich and savory with walnuts and roasted kale, a touch sweet from the dried cranberries and the feta delivers a salty creamy tang. This is a great recipe to make ahead of time and it is easy too. If you have meat eaters in your family, this can be garnished with roast chicken or sautéed shrimp for a light and healthy meal. Quinoa Pilaf with Roasted Kale 1 cup of quinoa, cooked according to the instructions on the back of the package and set aside. ¼ cup chopped walnuts 1 bunch of kale, roasted and crumbled **If you don’t have time to roast the kale, just use 1 cup of purchased plain kale chips, crumbled. 2 Tbsp. olive oil ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. pepper ¼ cup dried cranberries, chopped ¼ cup crumbled feta Juice and zest from 1 lemon ¼ cup of olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Preheat the oven to 400F To roast kale—aka homemade kale chips—Strip the leaves from the stems and discard the stems. Toss the leaves with 2 Tbsp olive oil and ½ tsp. salt and ¼ tsp. pepper. Place on a cookie sheet in a single layer. Roast until lightly browned and crispy, about 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool. When cool, crumble. Leftover crumbled kale is great sprinkled on popcorn. Combine the quinoa with the cranberries, feta, walnuts, olive oil, lemon zest, juice and crumbled kale. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Enjoy! Editor’s Note: Chef Phoebe loved cooking from an early age growing up outside of Portland, Maine. Her mother and aunt were accomplished self-taught cooks who welcomed curious Phoebe into their kitchens. From tapping her own maple syrup from trees in the yard to baking homemade bread, Phoebe learned at an early age about the delicious benefits of whole, natural, seasonal foods. Phoebe lives in San Francisco with her husband and their daughter. In her spare time she enjoys read-ing cookbooks, traveling, studying yoga practices and, of course, learning about all the latest culinary happenings from around the globe.
