Your Branch’s Board at Work Kimberly Thacker 630-665-4631 [email protected] Board discussion in June:

Six Branch members will attend the AAUW National Convention in Washington D.C. This may be an all-time record for our Branch, and will certainly have a positive impact on the leadership of the Branch. The Board heard a report of Reality Store 2011 and recommendation to consider Reality Store expansion to another school. The Board reviewed the “almost” year-end budget summary and appointed an audit committee. New President Phyllis Fogel announced some of her incoming Board members. There are still a few openings.

Board meetings are always open to the entire Branch membership. Next meeting will be August 10.

News from the Membership Desk Sherry Yarema 630-858-5225 [email protected] Our Branch received recognition at the AAUW-IL State meeting for retaining membership at a greater than 90%

rate and another award for increasing membership 13% from February 2010 to February 2011. Thanks to all of you for making this possible. Let Sherry know if you know of anyone who might like to learn more about AAUW.

Educational Opportunities Fund Sue Balk 630-858-0829 [email protected]

Donna Jennings 630-858-1461 [email protected] Our Branch received recognition at the 2011 AAUW-IL State meeting for its financial contribution to AAUW. Wheaton-Glen Ellyn AAUW is number one in the state for total giving and 4

th in the state in per capita giving. These awards

reflect our Branch’s contributions to the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund, Legal Advocacy Fund and the contribution to fellowships and grants that we made from the proceeds of the 2010 Used Book Sale.

We also awarded scholarships to attend COD to one girl from each of the Wheaton and Glen Ellyn public high schools, reflecting a commitment to help local women in addition to funding AAUW educational opportunities at the national level.

Film Group Marilyn Mayer Wiedemann 630-858-2091 [email protected] Film Group will meet the second Friday evening in July and August. Contact Marilyn for updated information.

Wheaton-Glen Ellyn AAUW Branch Board, 2010-11 is outgoing. We thank them for their efforts this past biennium. New President Phyllis Fogel will announce the new Board later in the summer– see your AAUW Directory or, on the website, click on Members Only/Branch Directory/Part 1 for contact information.

Twigs –Summer - Page 3 Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) Pat Walton 630-736-0295 [email protected] University of Delaware Misapplied Title IX. Earlier this year, the U of Delaware announced plans to cut the varsity status of its

men’s track team. The university took the unusual step of cutting men’s sports to comply with Title IX gender balance requirements. Ironically, the track team has filed a Title IX discrimination complaint against the school, which has agreed to enter mediation. Reducing

men’s athletics to comply with Title IX, while not prohibited, is inconsistent with the law’s intended purpose of expanding opportunities

AAUW believes that cases like this do not support the troubling myth that expanded opportunities for girls have come at the expense of boys. We maintain that school opportunity is not a zero sum game, and that the real issue is about girls doing better, not boys doing worse.

Supreme Court Declines Case of Student Forced to Cheer Her Rapist. Last week, the Supreme Court declined an appeal brought by a

Texas high school cheerleader who was cut from her squad in 2009 after refusing to cheer for the athlete accused of raping her. To add insult to injury, the girl’s family has been ordered to reimburse the school $45,000 in legal expenses. In criminal court in 2010, the girl’s attacker (the athlete she was supposed to cheer for) was charged with rape and pled guilty to assault. The cheerleader has received a lot of support.

Mansourian Case Goes to Trial. In their lawsuit, Mansourian v. Regents of the University of California, Arezou Mansourian and other former

members of the U of C, Davis women’s wrestling team say that the university discriminated against them in violation of Title IX. Over the last decade, their case has gone through different courts to determine whether or not there was sufficient notice of the discrimination, not whether or not discrimination occurred. On May 23 they had a hearing on the merits of the case. AAUW has supported this case to help assure a hearing.

Wal-Mart v. Dukes. A decision from the U.S. Supreme Court on this LAF-supported case is expected in June.

Decision in Harris v. Baltimore. In early May, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit issued a ruling in the case of Lynette Harris, an

electrician with the city of Baltimore who had sued for sexual harassment after being subjected to a work environment with sexually explicit pictures and language. AAUW signed onto an amicus brief supporting Harris’s case. The circuit court found that there was sufficient evidence of harassment, but it still affirmed the granting of summary judgment for the city on Harris’s failure to promote her claim.

Twigs Karen Bondy 630-466-3527 [email protected]

Karen will continue as editor of Twigs. Let her know if you have ideas for any changes in reporting or format.

We have several advertisers who contribute to the financial health of Twigs and our operating budget We hope that most of them will renew their ads for 2011-12, but we are always open to new advertisers. Thank our current advertisers when you frequent their facilities. Ask at places where you do business if they would consider an business card ad. Cost is $60 for ten issues. And we could use an “ad manager”, a once-a- year job of collecting copy and checks for returning and new advertisers. Contact Karen if you can help.

Like e- or U. S.? Members need to let Jane Palmer or Karen know if you prefer a different format to receive your newsletter. If electronic works for you, it saves the Branch a little money. If you wish to receive it in the U.S. mail, that’s no problem. Just let us know. Send Karen changes to the e-mail address where you wish to receive Twigs. Make sure your spam filter will allow you to receive e-mail from my address and group mailings.

P. M. Lit Group Kimberly Thacker 630-665-4631 [email protected]

Our June PM Lit meeting will celebrate a year of great book conversation and include a vote for next session’s titles. We’ll meet at 6:30 on Monday, June 20, at Bonnie Wheaton’s home. Please bring a dish to share. Bonnie’s address is 1203 E. Harrison Street, Wheaton. This would be terrific meeting to attend if you are considering joining us for the first time next session. Please contact Kimberly if you’d like a list of the suggested books. PM Lit does not meet in July and August.

Non-Fiction Lit Group Margaret McGrath 630-942-0980 [email protected] The non-fiction lit book group will meet on Wednesday, June 22, at 7:00 p.m. at Jean Lindsey's house, 1644 Orth Drive, Wheaton. The book we will be discussing is Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by Ruth Reichl. A restaurant critic, editor of the now defunct Gourmet Magazine, and cookbook author, Reichl's memoir describes growing up with a very unusual mother. The book is poignant, hilarious and full of recipes. It isn't a long book; you still have time to read it and join us. On Wednesday, August 24, the group will meet to select books for the coming 2011-12 year. Please e-mail suggestions to Margaret in the near future. Location for this meeting will be announced. On Wednesday, September 28, the group will meet to discuss the final book of the 2010-11 year, Remembering Survival: Inside a Nazi Slave Labor Camp by Christopher Browning. The author is a historian who deals with eyewitnesses, in this book, hundreds of survivors most living in Canada. In his research, Browning realized that films about the holocaust influence people's memories and he provides analysis of the very act of memory and how it behaves over time.
