At my doctor’s appointment this week, I notice my doctor looks worse than I do. Doc: How are you? Me: Exhausted. How are you? Doc: Exhausted. We give each other a knowing smile. But is that ok? Living exhausted will kill you. So, I push her, as she looks up my chart on the computer. Me: So, what’s going on with you? Doc: I haven’t had a vacation yet this year. I realized I have 3 hours a day where I am not working and that is just enough time to work out, shower, eat and wash a load of clothes. I love my job but this is not sustainable. Me: What can you do about this? Doc: I’m working on it. Me: Me too. I’ve been focusing on how to work smarter. A big key for me is sharing the work and the responsibility for the work with my very capable team. If you are exhausted too, do yourself a favor right now and keep reading. ___________ The practice of adaptive leadership* requires us to go up to the balcony. We need to drag ourselves up the stairs to look over our own lives, then take concrete steps to DO something. Here are the next steps I’m making space for in my own life:

• Confidants: (beyond your partner/spouse): get a coach, spiritual guide, therapist, peer group to talk with outside the people you work with every day. Do this now. • Sanctuaries: make time in your life to create, exercise, garden, read, worship, pray, study… whatever it is that renews your soul. Get disciplined about this. Go on a pilgrimage by digging deeply into something you love. It doesn’t have to be church related. Do this as often as you can. • Gratitude: practice optimism and realism with a grateful heart. Hold these together no matter what. Do this every day.

Evangelism Committee Carol Boettler, Chair

The Evangelism Committee met on September 5th: ▪ Little Graces

o Library Project Becky wrote and presented an excellent Temple Talk on this project and the congregation has responded. Becky has enough money to place an order with Amazon. Bookplates will list the name of the donor, not the church (separation of church and state). Becky will create a spreadsheet for the donations.

o Pocket Prayer shawls, receiving blankets, onesies Suzanne spoke with Sharon Conley, the volunteer coordinator at Kent General, for specifics on pocket crosses and receiving blankets for the newborns. Sharon said they do not need newborn clothes or pocket prayers shawls. She is interested in having receiving blanks. Suzanne will check with Sharon as to what exactly she wants: receiving blankets or baby blankets.

o Carol talked about the importance of remembering our goal with the Little Graces: to present opportunities for “bite sized ministries” that others can lead and/or participate in. The ideas this committee has generated are wonderful, but not to all be carried out by this committee.

▪ Sine Nomine will be held on September 21st with Misty and Stuart hosting at Stuart’s home in Dover. The Boettlers will host on Dec. 7th, and Cathy and Chuck Josephson on Jan. 21st.

▪ Nametags are in and turned out well. Carol made an announcement about the new tags and also how important it is for everyone to wear theirs. She wrote a short blurb on the subject for the newsletter and bulletin and thinks more people are wearing theirs.

▪ Emergency Soup Need—Today we made two large pots of soup needed to feed about 50 homeless people in Dover. Pastor will take the soup to Interfaith Ministries on the 10th. He will use his discretionary funds for bread to be served with the soup.

▪ UPDATED post meeting: We need to make soup for Sept. 17th and 24th. Days chosen are Sunday, Sept. 16th at 8am (for the 17th)—Becky, Carol and ????, will lead the process; Carol will shop and make the base. The soup for the 23rd will be made on Sept. 20th at 6 PM with Rosemarie making the base, Carol will shop for ingredients except the chicken. (Carol will confirm with Susanne, need others).

▪ Next Meeting: Wednesday, October 1, 2018, 7 PM (possibly earlier, if we need to make soup) Congregation Council President – Tom Burns

The Council met on September 10: • Music Director/Bell Choir Director:

o Misty Fiske has taken on the added responsibility for Bell Choir Director from September 1,2018 through October 31, 2018.

o Misty has resigned effective October 31, 2018. o A committee has been formed to find one or two replacements for Music Director and Bell

Choir Director. The committee is comprised of Sam Reinhardt, Terri Brown, Ruth Lyon, Pr. Mark Walters, and either Tom Burns or Lew Friday. A few possible candidates have been identified.

(Continued On Page 3)

o Pastor Mark Walters made a motion to authorize Misty Fiske to be paid the current combined

salaries of Music Director and Bell Choir Director beginning September 1st through October 31, 2018. Robin Burrow seconded the motion. Unanimously approved.

• Youth & Family Mission Director update – Interviews were conducted for the position and Jennifer Miller reported that none of the candidates from the advertisements were found to be acceptable. Lonna Price will be interviewed next week. It was acknowledged that since we are running a deficit, there may be a negative reaction from some members of St. Andrews to hiring for this position. It was also discussed that before the candidate is hired, there will be a meeting of the candidate and families of all youth.

• SALC 60th Anniversary – Robin Burrow has tickets ready for sale, and she will begin to actively sell tickets this Sunday after the Service. Robin will also purchase 100 souvenir magnets for $95 to be given to each family (one per family) at the event.

• Boscov’s fundraiser – Carol Boettler cannot sell the coupons for Boscov’s due to a conflict with travel, so Carol Babst volunteered to sell them beginning this Saturday at the Festival.

• Finances – o Capital Campaign – there was discussion about the pledges received and it was decided that the

information will be presented to the congregation in October. o Council would like to meet with the Finance Committee. o There was discussion about a plan to make presentations to the congregation. It was decided that

Council members will speak to the congregation on four consecutive Sundays, to help raise financial awareness and pledges: ➢ 9/30/18 - Tom Burns will present the status of finances, including the Capital Campaign. ➢ 10/7/18 - Robin Burrow will speak about the reasons why we give to our Church. ➢ 10/14/18 – Gus Raitz will talk about Stewardship. ➢ 10/21/18 – Pr. Mark Walters will preach about generosity.

September 2018

Greetings:

It’s difficult to believe that Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing has been

operating for ten years!

To celebrate, we will have a dinner and musical evening on Saturday, October 20. A flyer is attached, which we invite you to

share. Please post details in your community bulletin. We appreciate your purchase of tickets before October 15 and also welcome

sponsors and purchasers of advertisements in a program booklet as well as contributions of silent auction items.

We continue to operate a busy and full shelter, with most successful in securing employment and moving on to stable lives in the

community. Our Resource Center is an active hub of assistance on a daily basis, particularly for those who manage to live without

any regular place to live.

This year, we have been able to add part-time mental health resources to address the needs of both shelter residents and resource

center clients. Recently, we have added a part-time Community Health Worker. She is establishing relationships with local

medical professionals to address the health needs of the homeless as well as coordinating health education and inoculation efforts

targeted to managing and improving individual health. We are grateful to have access to these two key professionals.

In addition, we have added a third case manager in order to increase employment opportunities and a full range of assistance to

additional unsheltered clients. This means that we are actively assisting over 100 individuals at one time to achieve their individual

goals, aiming to make it possible for them to lead productive and purposeful lives in our community.

We have new group of interns from DelTech and DelState who are helping many who come to the Resource Center. Some are able

to assist in the shelter in the evening or on Saturday mornings to extend our staffing capacity.

With the strong job market, we continue to see a high rate of employment among those who reside in the shelter or who come to

the Resource Center for assistance in searching for jobs. This week, we also see an influx of folks from North Carolina who flee the

storm. Unfortunately, they find that we do not have sufficient housing for those already living in our area.

As part of Dover’s Task Force on Homelessness, a new nonprofit housing corporation has been established: we hope that the Central

Delaware Housing Collaborative will be successful in developing housing that will be affordable and available to those moving from

homelessness to the stability that a job can lead to.

We continue to depend on the community to provide meals and contributions. During September, the Salvation Army has been

unable to provide mid-day meals to the homeless except for Saturdays; but the community has stepped in to make it possible for

food to be available, with most served at DIMH.

We still need help with shelter dinners. September 19, 22 and 30 are still open.

Next month, we have a number of evenings without dinner scheduled at the shelter. The following October dates are open for

those who might be able to assist: 2 through 7, 13, 14, 15, 17, 23, 27, 29, 30 and 31.

If you can help out, please call our office at 736-3600.

With cooler weather on the way, we welcome donations of warm clothing, especially large-size sweaters, jackets and coats.

THANK YOU for your continued support. We always welcome your financial contributions and ask that you send them to:

DIMH, PO Box 1148, Dover DE 19903

Blessings,

Jeanine
