Why should I use email when I can spam people on facetweet?

• There are more than 3.2 billion email accounts active right now. 95% of people who buy junk online use email and 91% check their email at least once every single day

• Brand page organic reach on Facebook is now often under 3%. 22% of marketing emails are either blocked, go missing or end in a spam folder. 78% email reach is still a tonne better than 3%

• A Facebook post has a lifespan of about 90 minutes, Twitter messages sink or swim in 5. Email sits around inboxes like a vampire until someone opens the coffin or deletes it with a stake

• It’s really easy to measure the number of people you’ve emailed, the open rates and the click through numbers on links in email. Working out the value of that is a hell of a lot easier than a tweet if you don’t know what you’re doing

• 77% of people prefer to receive promotional stuff through email, only 4% prefer social networks

• It’s really easy to segment and personalise email if you put a bit of effort in. People like it when you make an effort

• When you combine it with a working return email address and contact buttons and your social network details, email becomes a really cool engagement tool that starts real life conversations (on the internet)

The slide with the really important email marketing tips

• The from line is as important as the subject– Use it to convey clearly who you are– Leave the smart arse wit for the subject or body

• Keep your subject line under 50 characters– “Welcome to the DoomSlay August Newsletter! Read about what we’ve been up to including our

awesome new video, November tour plans and Halloween sale” is awful– Never ever use “reminder” or “help” unless you really don’t want people to open it– Be careful not to load it with all of the words that make spam filters prang out– Don’t use CAPS, exclamation marks or awful promotion phrases from a 1983 user car advert

• Make sure the links are obvious and relevant– The purpose of your email is probably to drive traffic somewhere, make it clear where that is and why the

readers want to go there• Don’t go image mad

– Lots of people open email primarily on mobile devices, it’s probably best not to make reading your junk harder than it should be

• Keep the body copy short and concise– No matter how much you think your audience care and want to read your every thought, they don’t– If you’re going to write paragraphs make sure its easy to scan and highlight the important bits

• Make it easy to unsubscribe– Nobody enjoys clicking through to a website, getting a password reminder, signing in then answering 30

questions about why they no longer want you to read your crappy sales emails
