How does it work ?…

• Selection of events through the Call for Contributions – proposals to be submitted by 15 October 2011

• On-line process (with several mechanisms to encourage people to partner instead of creating individual events)

• Competitive process (limited number of slots available)

• Proposals evaluated against a series of criteria(all components of IUCN involved in the process)

A separate announcement will be made at the beginning of 2012 for receptions and social events

What is the Members’ Assembly?

IUCN’s highest level decision-making body, where Members:

• Approve IUCN’s four year Programme and its financial plan

• Elect the President, Treasurer, Regional Councillors, and Chairs of the Commissions

• Vote on motions thereby establishing the general policy of IUCN

What is a motion?

A draft of any decision which the World Conservation Congress is requested to take.

Motions become Resolutions or Recommendations

Resolutions are directed to IUCN itself. Recommendations are directed to third parties, and may deal with any matter of importance to the objectives of IUCN.

Need to be consistent with the objectives of IUCN

Must relate to new issues or a new aspect of issues addressed at previous Congresses

Council and Secretariat currently reviewing entire IUCN policy in order to identify gaps and assist Members and Council to prepare relevant motions for the 2012 Congress

Motions to be supported by at least 5 co-sponsors. Proposer and co-sponsors must be in good standing (dues paid up to and including 2011)

Motions must be submitted before 9 May 2012

Motions may also be submitted at the Congress if the subject is new, urgent, could not have been foreseen, arises out of the deliberations at the Congress, or responds to matters on the agenda

Director General’s letters to IUCN Members of 12 August 2011 with the ‘call for nominations’ and profiles

The President and the Treasurer:

Not more than two nominations made by the Council to the Members' Assembly after considering the proposals made by Members before 16 January 2012 at noon GMT/UTC

After the candidates proposed by Council are known: nominations may also be made by forty Members eligible to vote o from at least three Regions o before 8 July 2012

more than two full terms
