A CHRISTMAS POEM FOR BRIDGE PLAYERS

Author unknown, but thanks to Dorsey Shaw for sharing this

“Twas the Duplicate Christmas party and needless to say, The punch and the season made us quite gay. “Find your seats and shuffle” the Director had said, As visions of first place danced in my head. When I checked our position I got dry in the mouth, We’d been assigned “Table # 1 North-South”. Just little ole novices my partner and me, We’d placed fourth once—but never three. Had fate decided to put us to the test With two Life Masters sitting East-West? We took our positions and said not a word, But I’m certain our heartbeats could surely be heard. He shuffled the cards without blinking an eye, I dropped one on the floor and thought I would die. As North I was dealer and though I was green, I knew to open you must have thirteen. I spread my hand and counted but alas - With only ten points I had to pass. And frankly I thought this was a shame, I’d never before had thirteen spades in a game. My left hand opponent, East by name, Opened “Two Diamonds” and I thought What a Shame! My partner, South, was trembling with fear, And the bid of “Two Hearts” came across to my ear. My right hand opponent sat straight in his chair, “Three Hearts” was the bid he chose to declare. Now I had a good suit, but alas - With no help in Hearts, I had to pass. My left hand opponent now bid “Three Spades,” You can imagine how I was amazed.

My partner, South, bid “Four Hearts” and shoot, If they take the bid I couldn’t lead her best suit. My right hand opponent studied his hand, And soon “Seven No Trump” was his command. It was my time to bid and just to save face, I doubled ‘cause I knew they were missing the Spade Ace. The next three bids were Pass, Pass, Pass So I was ready to lead a Spade but, alas - My partner was nervous and she led the Heart King. A lead out of turn - what a damnable thing. The Director was called and I can still hear his voice, As he told the Declarer he could make his own choice. With a singleton Heart, you must understand, This could be the only entry to his hand; So he turned to me and looking real smart, He said, “Lead any suit, but don’t lead a Heart.” So, of course, I led my fourth best Spade, I guess it was the best lead I ever made. Cause in this hand I never lost the lead, And our opponents (Life Masters) had to concede.

Thirteen tricks we took right off the top, When we won the Board I thought I would pop. Now I ask you with a Board like this, The rest of the game — well how could we miss? And I overheard the Director say: “ Who was the lass Who had thirteen Spades and cleverly passed?” After winning first place and still full of fright,

“Merry Christmas” we called and they all said,

“ Good Night!”

WHAT IS BRIDGE? Bridge is a game we love And find to be compelling It helps to have a partner Who never resorts to yelling. You have to be a thinker If you want your status to mount Memory certain is needed And it helps if you can count. You need to learn the rules And be disciplined as well You must study all the systems Or your game will start to smell. Then the trickiest thing to find Is a partner who is good And kind and smiles when You don’t play the way you should. We all know what the prize is It’s being first in A And going home contented With our wonderful line of play.

Message from the President –

I hope you’ve enjoyed all of the upgrades to the tournament equipment the Board has made over the last couple of years. We have new bidding card inserts, new cards in our boards, new boards, and a new deal-ing machine to make the hands so you don’t have to do that at the beginning of your tournament game. A lot of what the Unit Board does is “behind the scenes”, but the equipment is a tangible sign of where we are mak-ing improvements. Thanks to our equipment manager David Greims (and his wife Sue) for taking care of it all for us. The unit has several things coming up in December –

our Holiday party is December 14. The meal will begin

at 1 pm and the game at 2 pm. This is a half-hour later

to help with the parking. Also, we’re having a STaC

week in the clubs December 15-21 with lots of silver

points. I hope you will enjoy these events. See you at

the tables. ~ Cheryl Clark

Unit 176 is now on Facebook. The Unit

Board encourages everyone to “like” the

page and send it to their friends.

Ft. Worth Regional For parking at the hotel, you can opt

out of using your toll tag at DFW: go to your NTTA ac-

count, select user preferences, and uncheck DFW airport

OR just don’t go through a toll tag gate. ***Very Im-

portant *** When you enter the airport, go through a

gate that is NOT a toll tag gate. Take a ticket and have it

validated at the Bell Stand. If you go through a toll tag

gate, you will be charged through the mail or on your toll

tag account if you haven’t opted out.

Cheryl Clark I was raised in the Houston area and moved to Dallas about 5 years

ago. I have been playing duplicate bridge since 2005 and achieved Life Master status in March 2011, Silver Life Master in March 2014. When I'm not playing bridge, I have a small CPA practice and I volunteer with my Church as treasurer. I also volunteer as coordinator and cook for a meal for about 60 that my church sponsors once a month. I have been married to my husband Dave for 30 years. I truly enjoy bridge and enjoying serving the Dallas bridge community on the Unit Board. I served as the Unit 176 Treasurer for 2 years and am currently serving as president.

I was born in Dallas, but grew up in Houston. After working a couple of years in the Tax Randy Earle

department at Arthur Andersen, in Houston, as a CPA, I moved to Dallas to practice law. I practiced 30 years with the same firm, which was named Biggers, Beasley, Earle & Hightower when I retired from the firm. I got married to Kay Earle and we moved to Florida on our boat. We lived on a boat for 8 years, mainly in Florida, but with trips to Texas and the Bahamas. I got my Captain’s license and started a new career as a boat captain driving other people’s boats (the largest being 90’) on the East coast and Gulf coast. We got a motorhome after we sold our boat and toured the US and Canada visiting all the 48 states and many of the National Parks. I played bridge with my family as a child, but started Duplicate Bridge in Florida in 2004. I finally got my Life Master this year with the help of some great partners and teammates. Birth of grandson caused my wife to move back to Dallas, and I came with her. We have a son, Kris, and daughter-in-law Kristin, with 2 grandsons Knox, 2 and Karson, 4, and Lacey, 3, a Portuguese Water Dog. I still practice law from my home primarily doing Wills and Probate. The rest of my time is spent playing or studying Bridge, training Lacey, playing with grandsons, and riding my motorcycle.

Vi Ganeles I am originally from Glendale, NY and began my career in fashion there. I

moved with my late husband Stan to Texas in 1953 and began playing bridge after that. I also

continued in various positions in the fashion industry, retiring from Neiman’s. I have three amaz-

ing daughters, and five grandchildren. I can now spend time in leisure pursuits such as reading

and playing bridge. I hope you will consider me for the board. I would be happy to help out Unit

176.

As a longtime player, I have decided to run for the Board to give back to the game that has Eileen Smith given me so much. My kids like to say that I have been playing since the dinosaurs roamed the

earth, but I think it is probably closer to the invention of the light bulb. I was born in Pennsylvania

and graduated from Penn State. I taught high school English and then worked for IBM until my

first child was born. I then worked for SCA and Bob Hamman (bridge lessons not included). I have

three great kids and one perfect grandchild. Last year I retired and now have time to devote to my

passions - the primary one of course being bridge.

Martha Young I am a North Carolina native who moved to Dallas in 2001 after spending 6 years in Richmond

Va. As some of us non-natives say, “I am not from TX but I got here as quick as I could!” Serious-ly, while I love Texas, it was a career move. I accepted an Information Technology executive posi-tion with the American Heart Association. I’ve been playing duplicate bridge since 1991 and achieved Life Master status shortly after

moving to Richmond, VA in 1994. Both my move to Richmond and my subsequent move to Dallas

were eased due to the friends I quickly made in the “bridge world”. I play bridge to relax, meet

friends and the friendly competition. I travel to several tournaments a year and play regularly in

the local clubs. My other hobbies include gardening, reading, following sports (especially UNC

basketball) and my dogs. I served as a board member for the Richmond Bridge Association, and now I am interested

and ready to serve the Dallas Bridge Association as a Unit Board member.

2015 Candidates for the Unit 176 Board - Vote for three at the Jan. Election Sectional.

Directions:

From North Dallas Tollway exit on Northwest Highway. Go west to the second

light from the NDT. Turn left (south) onto Midway. Entrance is on the right.

Please leave the parking spaces over the bridge for people who are less mobile.

Since there are only 100 paved parking spaces, it is hoped that you

will make plans to carpool with some of your friends.

If you would like to donate to those less fortunate, here are some suggestions:

Gift Donations: Please bring an unwrapped new toy for ages toddler through 12+.

Items such as books, games, football, basketball, baseball, soccer ball, or Cowboy/

Maverick/Ranger items such as t-shirts or sweatshirts, dolls, crayons, paint sets will be appro-

priate. No “rolling stock” (bicycles, skateboards, skates) can be accepted due to liability issues. Donations

will be delivered to the Network of Community Ministries for distribution within the Dallas area.

Food /Necessities Donations: All non-perishable goods are welcome including macaroni and cheese, peanut

butter, pasta, ramen noodles, spaghetti sauce (no glass jars please), saltine crackers, any canned vegetables/

fruits/soups, or even toilet paper. All canned goods will be donated to North Dallas Shared Ministries

which provides food to over 900 people a week.
