Project OverviewVESL Students at Fremont Adult School followed

basic guidelines to create Power Point Presentations about their country.

This project took about 3 weeks with the class scheduled to meet for an hour a day 4 times a week.

Certain skills such as adding images, adding Word Art, modifying text, and manipulating the menu or toolbar were taught in several week increments as mini lessons before the introduction of Power Point.

VESL LabThe VESL lab is a multilevel ESL lab where

students improve their English skills and technology skills to prepare for the workplace. Computer lab activities include project work, internet use, software use, keyboarding, and introduction to word processing and MS Office programs.

Soft skills such as teamwork and communication are also an essential component of the class. In fact, students are responsible for making sure their “row” is on task or is following along with the class.

VESL LabThe lab is open entry/open exit class.

There were 25 students enrolled/registered in the lab at the time of the project.

The lab meets for an hour a day 4 times a week.

VESL LabAt the beginning of each semester (Sept, Jan,

Apr), students respond to a needs assessment (created as a WORD document, a blog, and online survey) to develop the direction of the class.

Based on student feedback, students have already completed projects such as: resume writing, cover letters, thank you letters, job search, email, word art, calendars, MapQuest directions, weather reports, excel to create a budget, excel to create a life history timeline, and so much more!

Students say that they feel much more comfortable with technology now and are even trying to use their computers at home to access my webpage and complete assignments at home.

ObjectivesObjective 1: Given access to the internet and a

sample, VESL lab students will develop at least 8 power point slides with text and graphics.

Objective 2: Using Internet maps, students will locate their country on maps.

Objective 3: By surfing the internet, students will gather information and write short phrases or simple sentences.

Objective 4: The students will present their projects to the teacher and to one or more classmates.

Method – Before you startStudents viewed the sample as shown on my

webpage of the FAS website.

Students referred to Handout 1 for expectations of project.

Students used the student worksheet titled Get Ready for Power Point to help find and organize information from the internet.

Students were advised not to copy and paste (plagarism).

Method – PowerPoint1. PowerPoint Interface and Menu bar handoutOpen PowerPoint and choose a slide design.2. Add information to slides from Get Ready for

Powerpoint Handout.3. SAVE in the vesl folder. Each student has

his/her own folder.4. Add images using Google images. 5. Animation added to slides.6. Present the PowerPoint to the teacher and to

one other student in the classroom.

ConclusionOut of 25 students, 21 students participated at

some level in the project.14 students completed the project.

Students projects are displayed in the lab and are available on the school webpage for view.

Students expressed great excitement for the project and are eager to try another Power Point presentation assignment.

100% of the students said they learned how to surf the web as well as to create/edit/add images to a Power Point document.
