On Your Bike – Active Transport Conferences

Thank you to all our local BUGs and individual members who attended the conferences.

Board member Greg Krix, was on the spot and provided the feedback that appears on the front page of this edition of PushOn.

MediaBoard member Richard Birdsey was

interviewed by Quentin Dempster for an ABC Stateline story on sustainable transport in Sydney (transcript).

The story was triggered by the success of transport initiatives put in place for World Youth Day. The interview aired on 25 July and included messages on how cheap and convenient bikes are compared to other forms of transport, the importance of the NSW Government properly resourcing initiatives like Bike Plan 2010 and including active transport in infrastructure planning. Making cycling a viable alternative to motorised transport and integrating into public transport networks were also important messages.

We’ve had overwhelmingly positive feedback about the story from members, other bikers and cycling organisations. We will keep pushing these messages to the media and taking it to the government and community.

Richard also chatted with Clive Robinson on 2UE in a regular feature on places to ride in Sydney on Saturday 26 July. He described a weekend ride in the Blue Mountains from the Imperial Hotel in Mt Victoria to Jenolan Caves as a weekend trip with some good hills, great

scenery and historic accommodation at either end. As this is a bit of a tougher ride we’ll be interested to see how many riders take it up!

Tour de France BreakfastsTour de France breakfasts were held

in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. They were a huge success, with Tour rider Henk Vogels the keynote speaker flying to Australia especially for the series. Henk provided a great insight into what happens behind the scenes of the world’s greatest bike race.

President Jenny Burn attended both Sydney and Brisbane Events. She was joined in Brisbane by the Presidents of the other bicycle coalition members, who took the opportunity to spend time talking about our shared interests and challenges. Pictured below, Harry Barber CEO Bicycle Victoria, Simon Crone (BV), Jenny Burn (Bicycle NSW) Bill Loveday (Qld) and Maureen Merrick (SA) .

The group was generously hosted by Bicycle Queensland, and toured some features of Brisbane’s cycling infrastructure, including the recently opened city bike parking facility.

Gear Up Girl – WorkshopAnother fantastic morning was held

on Saturday 19th July - the Gear Up Girl workshops took on a new, more ‘intimate’ format including a different venue and smaller workshops.

Bicycle NSW President Jenny Burn welcomed the ladies over breakfast, and introduced the guest speaker Katrina Van Der Spiegel. Katrina is the current Australian Champion in 24 hour solo mountain biking and she has also just placed a fabulous second in the recent World Solo 24 Championships. Just as importantly, Katrina shared her inspiring story about “getting on her bike” and practical tips about the challenges of balancing work, family and a demanding training schedule. Everyone appreciated

her getting up early on a Saturday to take the time to speak to our participants –a big thank you from us all to Katrina.

Fifty women then got stuck into the workshops, which included Practical Skills, Changing a Flat Tyre, Commuting and Cycle Safety, and Training and Nutrition. As one participant said “I have more confidence to give it a go and be more adventurous in my rides”.

Bicycle NSW Annual General Meeting - 1 November 008

Details of this year’s AGM appear on the AGM page of the Bicycle NSW website. We are looking forward to briefing members on the significant developments in the external environment and range of changes in the operations of Bicycle NSW over the last 12 months and anticipate a full agenda! We welcome input and questions from members to the floor of the AGM - for the first time this year we have provided the facility for questions to be put on notice to the Board – these questions may be lodged via email to the secretary as detailed on the AGM page of the website.

Bicycle NSW Strategy UpdateAs reported in the March edition of

News from the Board, we are currently undertaking a review and update of the Bicycle NSW Strategic Plan developed during 2007. We will be publishing the updated plan on the website before this year’s AGM and will include more detail on the Board’s “policy guidelines” that inform the 6 key strategies we identified in 2007.

Bicycle NSW Constitutional ReviewThe external lawyers have been

formally briefed on this project and work has commenced on drafting. A summary of your feedback, the process to date and plans going forward are detailed on the AGM page of the Bicycle NSW website.

…and finally…As always we welcome the opportunity

for input and discussion with our members. We will endeavour to address your concerns, comments and feedback through [email protected]

Please remember, the board exists to ensure that Bicycle NSW is well managed – we are not directly involved in day-to-day operations. You can find more information about the role we play published on the Board page of the Bicycle NSW website.

Sustainable House Day, Sept 13-14Rob Kemp, CAMWEST

Come and be inspired by some of the fantastic houses around NSW that will be open to the public over the weekend of September 13th & 14th. Venues in Western Sydney will be opening on Saturday the 13th, while those in other regions will be opening on Sunday 14th.

Last year we had an enjoyable ride visiting 5 of the houses in Sydney’s Inner West on the Sunday. A similar ride is being planned for this year - Details on the Pushon website [Ed: see CAMWEST’s entries in the Rides Calendar].

There are also a number of houses opening in regional areas. Opening times for all houses are between 10am and 4pm.

Entry cost is $5 per person per house. Further details, including a list of houses, can be found at http://www.sustainablehouseday.com, or contact Rob on 9864 8797 or via email [email protected].

Safety Alert for M2Cyclists accessing the M2 Motorway’s

breakdown lane are being reminded to follow the correct procedure when crossing on and off ramps.

Head of the Hills M2 Motorway, Mr Craig Greene, said today the reminder follows a number of incidents of cyclists ignoring cross over areas being reported to the motorway operators, Hills M2.

Recently a cyclist was injured and had to be transported from the site by ambulance, following a collision with a car in the vicinity of Pennant Hills off- ramp.

Mr Greene said while the exact cause of this incident is a matter for the Police, incidents like these are a reminder of the need for cyclists, as well as motorists, to be vigilant about their safety.

“There will always be a risk of serious injury when cyclists mix with cars and trucks travelling at speed along the motorway,” Mr Greene said.

“Hills M2 encourage both motorists and cyclists to be alert and obey the road rules. This is particularly important at On/Off ramp crossover points. Our records indicate that more than 1 in 4

accidents involving cyclists on the M2 occur as a result of cyclists failing to use the correct on/off ramp crossing points.

“If cyclists must cross traffic, such as at off and on ramps, they should do so only at the designated cross over points. Cross over points allow bicycles to cross at right-angles to motor vehicles, increasing their visibility.

“By taking a number of simple steps to ensure they follow the road rules, cyclists can help to protect themselves and lower the risk of an accident,” Mr Greene said.

Some simple tips to help keep cyclists safe include:

* Always wear a helmet and high visibility clothing with reflective fabric

* If riding at night, make sure you use appropriate lights

* Do not ride more than two abreast and 1.5m apart

* Use cyclist specific facilities where provided, such as crossing points.

* Ride on the left side of the road. In the same direction as traffic.

* If the breakdown lane is occupied, where possible clear the obstacle on the near side (far left-side) away from traffic.

* Dismount if necessary.

Thumbs Up & Down

Upgrade to cycling in Drummoyne/RozelleBob Moore *LBUG

LBUG and BayBug have been lobbying the RTA and the Minister for Roads (with help from MPs Verity Firth and Angela D’Amore) to include an upgrade of the bicycle route through Drummoyne and Rozelle as part of the Victoria Road Upgrade Project.

We are happy that the RTA recently announced (http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/victoriaroad) that cycle facilities would be improved along the corridor from Gladesville Bridge to White Bay. Further talks are to be held with the Bugs and local Councils as to what will be included.

Our main hope is that the shared footpath through Rozelle will be improved and that in particular the poorly sited bus shelters that make passage for pedestrians and cyclists difficult will be replaced or resited. The proposed new Iron Cove Bridge will have a shared cycleway on the western side so LBUG has suggested it would make sense to develop a new bike route on this side of Victoria Road through Rozelle.

This could be on back streets such as Waterloo, Belmore and Quirks Sts, coming out at White Bay, giving cyclists an alternative, on quiet streets, to the hazardous shared footpath.

Also thumbs up to Leichhardt Council for printing flyers to advertise LBUG EasyRiders, our monthly ride on the first Sunday for beginners or returning cyclists. These rides are designed to give people an introduction to cycling around the Inner West and to build up some skills and confidence.

Report-A-HazardThumbs up to those four councils who

have “signed up” to the Report-A-Hazard website.

Goulburn-Mulwaree, Wollondilly, Wingecarribee and Pittwater have taken the step to centralise their hazard reporting on this convenient site.

A one-stop site for reporting all road hazards is an obvious advantage to all road users, most of whom are not interested in the finer workings of council and knowing who deals with what and just want to get the problem fixed asap.

A big thumbs-down to councils who insist on looking at the world through “council-coloured” glasses and mistakenly believe that

everyone automatically knows how to report a hazard in their particular area.

So get on the phone, pull out the pen or start tapping the keyboard and nag your council until its name appears in the drop down box as well

Non-existent submission

A report in the Sydney Morning Herald by FOI journalist Matthew Moore reports on the extraordinary activities of the NRMA. (SMH, 9.08.08) A January press release from the states motoring organisation referred to a submission which had been made to the RTA and claimed that a survey showed 25 cyclists using the new Epping Rd cycleway (at that stage only in the early stages of construction!). Cyclist Nigel Withers (Australian Cyclist, Jan-Feb), pursued this, with the august organisation eventually admitting that no submission had been made. Requests for copies of the bike lane usage survey on which the absent submission was supposed to have been based have also been unforthcoming. As Moore says in his article: “If the NRMA expects to be taken seriously [and] is going to quote from ‘surveys’, it should post survey reports on line to be scrutinised... An organisation this size should not be relying on misleading press statements alone to influence public debates.”

Cycling gets better in Wagga WaggaRay Loiterton *BWW

Good news here recently and certainly a big thumbs-up to Wagga Wagga City Council with the announcement of a proposal to expand and develop the existing network of bicycle routes within the urban and adjoining areas of the city.

The existing 35km walking/hiking track which encircles the city and is also used by mountain bikers will be melded into an overall network of shared off-road tracks and on-road cycle routes. Council has committed in excess of $250k for the project and has invited input to the plan from local user groups in what is seen as a huge step forward for all forms of cycling in the area.

A second thumbs-up to Wagga Wagga City Council. News this month that Council has ear-marked $50k towards the long awaited Wagga -Tumbarumba Rail Trail, is being viewed as a very positive step in the struggle to see this proposal move forward.

Weekend of 19 and 20th July saw a very successful Gundagai Winter ride take place. 14 riders left Wagga beach under grey skies on the saturday morning to tackle the 80km journey. Two punctures, same bike same tyre, delayed proceedings early but the group made good time to Wantabadgery for a beaut morning tea of home made pumpkin soup & biscuits (we’re spoilt down here). Back on the bikes to tackle the hills before another short break at Nangus and on to Gundagai for lunch.

A short tour around Gundagai finished the days riding before clean-up, dinner, a few drinks and catch up on Le Tour highlights. Sunday mornings weather looked scary, but the rain held off and a very welcome tail-wind made for an enjoyable trip home, well as far as Oura anyway. After a brief delay thanks to a very loud rear tyre blow-out near Oura (yes, same bike as before), the wind turned and the rain started, for the final 20km home. Cold and wet at the end but still enjoyed by all, many thanks to Allison & Peter Makin for organising the weekend.

A highlight amongst our upcoming events will be on Sunday August 24th with our end of winter ride. The

traditional trip from Wagga Wagga to Junee and back is to celebrate the end of winter. It could be cold, it could be warm, it could be wet or it could be dry. No matter what the weather throws up it is always a good day. The ride departs from Wagga Wagga Beach at 10am for lunch at the Junee Liquorice & Chocolate Factory with two ride options available, 82km round trip via Overdale or 100km round trip via Wantabadgery. Contact Peter on 6926 4288 or visit www.bww.org.au for details.

NSW schools reaping the benefits of Ride2School!James Adams *BNSW

Schools across NSW are seeing an increase in the number of students choosing active travel to get to and from school. Students are becoming highly motivated by the Hands Up! surveys and are determined to improve on their results month by month.

The Pocket Public School is a small school located on the North Coast of NSW. Not deterred by the long distances, students are travelling part of the way by car, meeting up and riding together to the school. This allows students to get their daily dose of physical activity and have fun on the way to school. Teachers have also noted a decrease in the numbers of cars around the schools gates at pick up and drop of times. Since their involvement with Ride2School they have seen a steady increase from 14% in March to 37% of their students choosing active travel in July – an awesome result!

Kurnell Public School motivates their students to get on their bikes,

scooters and walk to school by hosting a Ride2School day once per term. They encourage students to ‘give it a go’ and invite parents to join the festivities. Students who ride or walk for the first time like it so much that they carry on doing it after the event! The school regularly sees an average of 60% of students choosing active travel - well above the national average of 20%!

It is important that we educate our students of today so the adults of tomorrow live in a greener, healthier society. Schools involved with the Ride2School program show their commitment to the promotion of healthy behaviours and must be congratulated for their efforts to encourage active travel for the school journey. To register your school in the Ride2School program visit www.bicyclensw.org.au/RideToSchool.asp or call 9218 5405.

New Dahon Folding bicycleReview by Liz Hole

Just the thought of having to battle your way through crowds with your bike during peak hour and the added expense of having to buy a child’s ticket for your bike is enough to scare many people off riding to work.

However, at the Netti expo on the weekend I think I found the solution - Dahon.

Their new range of folding bikes, that retail from an affordable $300 (depending on the model) are the perfect way to avoid the ever increasing fuel prices and traffic congestion. These lightweight versatile bikes take less than 30 seconds to fold up and can be easily put in bag and stored under your desk.

Featuring the newest patented technology, advanced frame materials and construction, this range of bikes will have you to your destination on time and in style.

The bikes corner easily and are stable and responsive, also making them perfect for long weekend rides.

With their premium components the bikes deliver uncompromising quality and performance, including puncture resistant tyres and a high capacity pump

hidden inside the seat post – very clever! The Dahon range has been built

around speed, comfort and visibility to cars, making them the perfect bikes for you to ride to work.

I rode the MuP8 model and feel in love. It is just so easy to ride and comfortable. This is a great bike for both man and women.

And, yes! I am buying one just to ride to work on!

The International Bicycle Film Festival celebrates the culture of the bicycle and is held in over 15 cities worldwide including Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo, New York, LA, Milano and London. In Sydney the festival is hosted by Bike Sydney, a not-for-profit advocacy organisation. The festival is a celebration of bikes through the mediums of film, art and music.

Mystery tourAn invitation to submit images to an

exhibition of cycle touring photography.Anyone who has toured by bicycle

knows that it’s often the unexpected encounters and unplanned detours that become the highlights of a cycle tour. At a suitable distance, even the challenge of overcoming a mechanical breakdown in the middle of nowhere, can become a tale of ingenuity and heroic triumph.

For this exhibition, we are asking you to dig a little deeper into your collections of cycle touring images (no sunsets or posing with road signs) to reveal some of

those unexpected moments. We are looking for images that

document chance meetings with friendly (or unfriendly) locals; bush-mechanic-style innovation in the face of mechanical tragedies and magical places discovered by getting totally lost.

Images selected for the exhibition will be printed as oversized postcards with the photographer’s statement on the back.

SUBMIT: UP TO 10 LOW RES JPEG IMAGES [1mb each] FOR PREVIEW. Each photograph should be accompanied by a short statement (max. 20 words) about the image.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, September 12 2008 - EMAIL TO: [email protected]

Selected photographers will be asked to submit high resolution files at a later date. Prints not required.

‘road’ - is a series of art shows tying in with the International Bicycle Film Festival, bought to you by BIKESydney and Cheeky Transport.

RoadRodeMitra Jovanovic is curating an

upcoming art exhibition about bikes titled Road:Rode, to be held from 6th - 16th November 2008.

Road:Rode is the third exhibition in ATVPs Emerging Curator Mentorship Program and is part of the Eighth Annual International Bicycle Film Festival Sydney 2008.

ATVP is currently calling for proposals from artists in response to the exhibition title and/or the bicycle as a means of transport, recreation, sustainable practice and culture for the exhibition Road:Rode. The exhibition aims to bring the diverse cycling community together in a cultural and artistic expression of what it means to ride a bike.

For further information and a proposal form, visit ww.atthevanishingpoint.com.au/index.php?p=1_63 or email [email protected]

Road:Rode is sponsored by Bike Sydney.
