What you usually don't see ...

Page 19: Where the streets have no name

How to write a Japanese address

The Japanese addressing system is based on areas, subdivided from

big to small

● to (都 ), (capital),for Tokyo

● dou (道 ), (territory),for Hokkaido

● fu (府 ), (metropolis),for Osaka and Kyoto

● ken (県 ) (prefectures)which covers the rest of the country.

from BIG to small

● Prefectures (ken) are divided into counties (gun (郡 )) or cities (shi (市 ))

● Small cities are generally divided into "areas" or "neighbourhoods" (chou (町 ))

● Big cities are divided into wards (ku (区 )). Wards are divided into (chou (町 )) again.

● Then the blocks are numbered

● At the lowest level, the building has a number

● Often the name of the apartment house is included together with the apartment number

3 main things I have learned in

4 years mapping in Japan

Page 38: Where the streets have no name

[email protected] - #38

{1}What you take as granted

in “Western” countries

is likely to be different

somewhere else.

Page 39: Where the streets have no name

[email protected] - #39

{2}Language can be a real barrier

Page 40: Where the streets have no name

[email protected] - #40

{3}OSM is a great way to make friends

when you're in a foreign country

Page 41: Where the streets have no name

[email protected] - #41

If you come to Japan, send an email tohttp://lists.openstreetmap.org/mailman/listinfo/talk-ja

and some local mappers will help you to get

around!
