This site has a long list of culturesat cheap prices, though we adviseto steer clear of some species(Morels, Chaga, Cordyceps), as theyare for more intermediate toexpert growers and the culturesare likely not effective. But if you’relooking for a budget, simple oysterculture, this is a good site to use.

� Lion's Mane: MycTyson �

At the moment, MycTyson — thebest name in mushroom cultiva-tion, we think — is the go-to-guy forLion’s Mane fruiting bags. He’s sopopular, you need to pre-orderthem or run the risk of missing out.But he’ll soon begin offering Lion’sMane cultures.

And in the meantime, you couldalways buy a bag, enjoy themassive fruit it produces, clone therest, and create your own culture.

� Cordyceps/Reishi:Terrestrial Fungi �

Cordyceps is notoriously finickywhen it comes to fruiting andpreserving a fruiting culture. As aresult, culture isolation is best leftto the experts, like Ryan Paul Gatesof Terrestrial Fungi.Gates is also a Reishi master, so ifyou’re in need of either culture(~$35), he’s definitely the bestsource for a strong, fast-growingstrain you can keep in your culturelibrary for years.

Summary

CLONE YOUR WAY TO ACULTURE

Another way to source any kind of culture,from a grocery store Shiitake to a GoldenTeacher, is to clone a mushroom onto a Petridish of agar.

Though we’ll cover this in your class, thebasic idea is to take a freshly fruitedmushroom, split the stem or cap with yourthumbs, slice and remove a piece of themushroom that was previously unexposed tothe air (a slim piece from the widest part ofthe stem or a chunk from the fattest part ofthe cap works well), and then place it onto aPetri dish of clean agar. In a few days,mycelium should start growing on the plate.Viola, you just made yourself a culture.

PRO TIP!If you live in an area where there is one ormore mushroom growers, we recommendcontacting them and asking about theirculture library.At best, they’ll have a local culture that isalready adapted to your area’s climate. Atworst, they’ll have some other cultures thatyou can buy directly from them, savingyourself and your culture the cost andstress that shipping can wreak, andsupporting a local small business to boot.
