• African civilizations developed in sub-Saharan west and east Africa • Trade brought important economic, cultural, and religious influences to African civilizations from other parts of the Eastern hemisphere
EAST AFRICAN KINGDOMS
• East African Kingdoms • Axum:
• Near the Nile River & Ethiopian Highlands • Christian Kingdom • Existed between 100-900 A.D. • Became center of trade between West Africa & Indian Ocean
EAST AFRICAN KINGDOMS
• East African Kingdoms • Zimbabwe:
• Near the Indian Ocean coast • Near 2 rivers: Zambezi & Limpopo • Capital city was “Great Zimbabwe” which became a prosperous empire
WEST AFRICAN KINGDOMS
• The West African Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali & Songhai became a S.I.G.N.A.L. • Sahara Desert surrounded these empires to the North
WEST AFRICAN KINGDOMS
• Islam became a practiced religion • Gold and salt were transported along trans-Saharan trade routes • Niger River flowed through each empire
