WHICH ROUTE DO I NEED?

MDOT MTA has over 60 bus routes as well as two train lines (Metro SubwayLink and Light RailLink). In addition to regular service, select schools have supplemental service, which deviate off the regular route. To figure out which routes serve your school, refer to the table on pages 8-27. You can also see a map showing all of the routes at mta.maryland.gov.

Routes with a color name such as Blue or Green are CityLink routes. These buses come more often and make fewer stops than our other buses. Routes with a two-digit number such as 22 or 80 are LocalLink routes. Most of our bus routes are LocalLink routes and operate from morning until night every day of the week. Finally, routes with a three-digit number starting with a “1” are Express BusLink routes. Most Express BusLink routes only operate at rush hour and have long sections with no stops at all.

READING A TIMETABLE

The timetable for each route tells you when the bus will come and includes a map of the route. You can find timetables for all our routes at mta.maryland.gov.

Whether you are going to class, an after-school activity, or to hang out with friends, MDOT MTA’s CityLink, LocalLink, and Express BusLink buses, Metro SubwayLink, and Light RailLink are all great options to reach your destination! This brochure will help you figure out which routes serve your school and how to use BaltimoreLink, our region’s transit system, to get where you need to go.

2 | MDOT MTA Student Rider Guide

Want to skip searching schedules and maps, and have technology do it for you? The transit feature in Google Maps gives you trip information fast.

The timetable doesn’t list every stop. Instead, the times are listed for some stops and are called timepoints. The timepoints are marked on the map with a letter in a diamond. If your stop is between two timepoints, then the bus will come sometime between when it passes the timepoint before your stop and before it passes the next timepoint.

When reading the timetable, make sure you look at the right one for the direction and day of the week you’ll be traveling. To see the estimated times for when a bus will stop at your timepoint (or the timepoint before your stop), read down the column. To see when a bus will arrive at each timepoint along the route, read across the row. Remember that buses can be delayed by traffic and inclement weather so all times are approximate!

STUDENT PASSES

Baltimore City Public Schools will give students a BCPS Student Transit ID (CharmCard® Pass with Photo) which provides free travel on school days only between the hours of 5:00 AM and 8:00 PM on all CityLink, LocalLink, Express BusLink, Metro SubwayLink, and Light RailLink services. Passes are not valid on weekends, holidays, or any day that school is not in session. As needed, Baltimore City Public Schools may give students a Monthly BCPS S-Pass printed with a current calendar date. These passes are valid for students to travel during the same school day hours on MDOT MTA services as the CharmCard® pass.

RIDING WITH MDOT MTA

FINDING YOUR STOP

CityLink, LocalLink, and Express BusLink

• Each bus stop is marked with a white and red sign that lists all the routes stopping at the stop and their destinations.

• Be sure to get on the bus with the correct destination.

• Make sure you’re at the stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is due so that you don’t miss it.

Metro SubwayLink

• Metro SubwayLink has 14 stations between Downtown and Owings Mills. Each station entrance is marked with Metro SubwayLink signage. Visit mta.maryland.gov for a list of stations and their locations.

• Be safe. Stand away from the yellow line. When the chime sounds, step back and let the train doors close. Metro SubwayLink doors are not like elevator doors will not reopen automatically if you try holding them open.

Light RailLink

• LightRailLink makes 33 stops, including Hunt Valley, Timonium, Downtown, Cromwell, and BWI Airport. You must be at a Light RailLink platform to board Light RailLink. Visit mta.maryland.gov for a list of stations and their locations.

• Be safe. Stand away from the yellow line, look both ways before crossing the tracks, and cross only when no train is in sight.

4 | MDOT MTA Student Rider Guide

PAYING YOUR FARE

CityLink, LocalLink, and Express BusLink

• Flash your Student Transit ID, tap the farebox with your CharmCard®, or insert your money into the farebox. Have these ready when the bus arrives!

Metro SubwayLink

• If you are using a Student Transit ID or CharmCard® to pay your fare, just tap your pass at the fare gate.

• If you need to add money to your CharmCard®, you can do so at one of the vending machines. Just follow the prompts!

• If you are paying with cash, you’ll need to buy a single ride ticket from one of the vending machines. Once you buy your ticket, insert it in the faregate to enter Metro SubwayLink and remember to hold on to it, you’ll need it to exit the system at the end of your trip.

The route number or color and destination are shown on the front and side of all our buses, Metro SubwayLink, and Light RailLink. If you have any questions about where the bus or train is going, just ask the driver or another MDOT MTA staff member!

Never run to catch a bus or train! The next one will be along shortly.

mta.maryland.gov | 5

Light RailLink

• If you are using a Student Transit ID, you don’t need to do anything before the train arrives.

• If you are using a CharmCard® you’ll need to stop at one of the vending machines on the station platform before boarding the train. Just follow the prompts to validate your card. You can also add money to your CharmCard® at a vending machine if you need to.

• If you are paying with cash, follow the prompts to buy a ticket. Keep this ticket with you until the end of your ride.

• Fare inspectors make random checks on Light RailLink to ensure that everyone has paid. If requested by an MDOT MTA employee or police officer, you must show your Student Transit ID, CharmCard®, or single ride ticket. Riding Light RailLink without a valid pass or ticket is a crime and the penalty will cost you far more than it would have to pay the fare in the first place.

ONCE ON BOARD

• Be respectful and be safe!

• Give designated seats to seniors and passengers with disabilities.

• If you’re standing, hold on to a pole and on the bus, remain behind the yellow line at the front.

• Use headphones if you’re listening to music and talk to your friends in a low volume.

• Eating and drinking are not permitted, and please do not put your feet or bags on empty seats.

6 | MDOT MTA Student Rider Guide

STAYING SAFE

• Wait for bus and rail service at the designated stops, and remember, do not cross the yellow line! If someone is making you uncomfortable or if you see something suspicious, speak with any staff member, call Transit Police at 410-454-7720, or call 911.

• Our bus drivers, train operators, transit police officers, and other staff are responsible for everyone’s safety. Follow their instructions at all times and do not create distractions.

GETTING OFF AT YOUR DESTINATION

CityLink, LocalLink, and Express BusLink

• Each stop is spoken over the loudspeaker and displayed on an overhead screen.

• As the bus approaches your stop, pull the stop cord along the windows to let the driver know that you would like to get off

• Gather your belongings, and exit through the rear door.

• Only cross the street in a marked crosswalk and never cross in front of the bus!

mta.maryland.gov | 7

Metro SubwayLink

• The next station will be announced over the loudspeaker.

• Gather your belongings and prepare to get off.

• Follow signs to the station exit. Some stations may have more than one exit; ask an MDOT MTA employee for help if you aren’t sure which exit to use.

• Tap your Student Transit ID or CharmCard® or insert your single ride ticket into a faregate to exit.

Light RailLink

• The next station will be announced over the loudspeaker.

• Gather your belongings, and press the button next to the door to open it.

• Never cross in front of the train. Wait for it to depart and then use a designated crossing. Look both ways before crossing!

THANK YOU FOR RIDING WITH MDOT MTA!

ROUTE LOOKUP TABLES

Use the table on the following pages to see which bus routes stop at or close to your school. Some routes only come when school is about to start or just after it ends and are marked with one star (*). Other routes have additional service at the start and end of the school day and are marked with two stars (**). If a route for your school has a star, pick up a supplemental service brochure or read it online at mta.maryland.gov to find out about the supplemental service at your school.
