While the US President Barack Obama was in India last week to bring about change for the USeconomy, he left with no concrete message to address the concerns of the Indian IT servicesindustry.

We want access to your markets he said and was here in India to create stronger bi-lateral trade

relations. However, in his approach to create more jobs in the US through innovation andcollaboration with India on account of defence and nuclear energy, Obama missed out to bringany concrete outcome on issues relating to the Indian IT services and outsourcing industry. Infact, outsourcing was just not a part of the US Presidents agenda and senior executives from theindustry were not expecting much.

So though Obama did talk about doing away with protectionist measures, he didnt had much toput forth on the US border security bill that he recently signed and its related concerns.Nasscoms global trade development, vice-president, Ameet Nivsarkar, said, We are stillwaiting for an official communication from the government as both the Indian Prime Ministerand the US President have had communication on key issues put forward by us. These were

largely on cyber security, towards trade and against protectionism. Besides we did also putforward our view to sign Totalisation Treaty between the two countries that would exempt socialsecurity tax in both the countries. It is estimated that the Indian citizens largely from the ITindustry that go the US pay about $1 billion annually as social security tax to the USgovernment.

Infosys Technologies board of director and head of human resources (HR), Mohandas Pai,defined the outcome of Obamas visit as mildly positive for the Indian IT industry.

The best part that Obamas visit has done is clarifying that the Indian outsourcing industry hasnot stolen the US jobs but created tremendous opportunity for the US firms. We are happy to see

that the Indian government has put forward a very strong statement to the US in communicatingour stand.

Ganesh Natarajan, vice-chairman and MD of Zensar Technologies, said, Outsourcing was not apart of his agenda and we are expecting the two governments to take appropriate steps for theindustry. The Indian government has put forward a strong view and we expect it to result in apositive way for the industry.

It may be recalled that last year in a bid to bring back the reeling US...

The visit of Obama in India and his eloquent speech, interaction on different issues with theIndian students will definitely reflect in future relationship between the two countries and alsoclear message is sent about harmful activities of our neighbouring coutries. We are strong inoutsourcing activities including software technology but still we require improvement in lot ofresearch in core subjects including nuclear energy.

We should admit that we are far behind in research knowledge in medicinal chemistry for newinvention and drug designing compared to top Universities of USA who are doing the job forseveral years. Our leading pharamaceutical companies are not interested in investment ofresearch jobs in drug designing and new invention.

The article observes that we do not seem to have developed the skill or confidence to takepositions on principles without harming national interests; how I wish our foreign officediplomats had prescribed one for the nation. On the two indicators he has noted as the crux of thefuture strength of US India relations, the next generation would be very much interested in howliberal are the opportunities for their pursuing higher studies in the US. As for business sector, people would expect more American companies to put up their plants in India with joint venturefrom Indian companies so that it helps not only greater productive and meaningful employmentbut also helps us to matches with our record in the financial sector. In fact any concessions thatIndia would give to the US in the financial sector would have to be measured carefully and

released in appropriate instalments in line with the help it renders in our becoming equally strongin the manufacturing sector. In other words our test has to be on our gains in educational/visasand manufacturing sector.
