White Bird lived in a cage.

Gray Sparrow lived outdoors.

One Spring morning

White Bird woke

from beneath a blanket of feathers …

… to see Gray Sparrow swaying in the breeze

under a canopy of leaves.

That same day

Gray Sparrow noticed White Bird.

People liked to look at her.

They liked to give her food.

No one gave Gary Sparrow food.

People listened to White Bird’s songs.

No one heard Gray Sparrow’s song.

That night.

Gray Sparrow fell asleep and dreamed.

To live in a golden cage,

like White Bird’s place?

To have people feed me?

The next day …

… as the cage door swung open …

…White Bird felt deep inside…

….it was her time to fly.

To be free!

To spread her wings.

To float with the stars.

To perch in a tree.

To be in a rainbow of flowers …

… and find new friends …

… in the wild frontier?

White Bird flew…

… past the gate and out the window

for her great escape!

Testing her wings …

… She landed next to Gray Sparrow’s perch.

They hid in a bush,

and smiled at each other.

Suddenly!

Gray Sparrow flew from their hiding place.

White Bird followed.

They went to the park.

To the dizzying heights.

Above the tallest slide …

... and drank from a puddle

a cloud left behind…

… where someone noticed them …

… and watched them play.

… and flew off to his father.

“Daddy come see the white bird!”

In a flash White Bird flew.

Her wings were blue underneath

just like the sky.

“Honey that’s just a gray sparrow.”

White Bird hid inside the clouds …

… where no one can see her …

All they could see …
