White Bird greatly appreciates the generous support of the following foundations & government arts agencies:
Israel’s Office of Cultural Affairs in North America (Supporting Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollak US Tour)
All women. All men. Outstanding African American choreographers. Vibrant Latin American companies. That’s what White Bird’s diverse new season has in store for you.
Camille Brown returns with a humorous and poignant look at what it means to be a young black woman today. Portland’s own Tahni Holt, recipient of White Bird’s 2014 ‘Barney’ Creative Prize, is creating a piece focused on women’s physicality and emotional/sensory states.
The men are equally well represented with Britain’s charismatic BalletBoyz, Brazil’s urban street dancers of Companhia Urbana de Dança and Argentina’s stomping gauchos of Che Malambo.
PAUL KING, WALTER JAFFE, AND BARNEYPhoto by Jennifer Alyse
Over many years we have brought exceptional African American choreographers to the White Bird stage. This season we have three of the very best—Camille Brown, Ronald K. Brown (no relation except that Camille danced with Ron for many years) and, in a White Bird debut, Reggie Wilson, with his soaring, highly musical Moses(es).
Especially exciting is the long-awaited return of Israel’s Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak Dance Company. These wildly imaginative artists will launch our new Uncaged season with their beautiful and haunting Wallflower, in the wonderfully intimate Lincoln Hall.
Incredible physicality runs rampant through the season, with Diavolo, BalletBoyz, our two Latin companies Companhia Urbana de Dança and Che Malambo. And from Montreal’s 7 Fingers circus company comes the thrilling and delectable cuisine & confessions, uniting acrobatics with cooking. All these five shows are great for all ages.
Welcome to White Bird’s Season 19 where together we will discover an amazing world of dance!

NEST (No Empty Seats Today)Each year, through NEST (No Empty Seats Today), White Bird partners with 15 health and human service nonprofit organizations throughout Portland. When our patrons cannot use their tickets, we pass them along to these organizations for use by their clients. These NEST tickets allow people who might not otherwise be able to attend live performances to sit in prime seats at a White Bird dance event.
COMMISSIONINGCommissioning new work is central to White Bird’s mission. Since 1997, White Bird has commissioned 34 new works from choreographers in Portland and beyond. In the 2016-17 season White Bird will premiere a new work by Tahni Holt, recipient of the 2014 ‘Barney’ Creative Prize, a commissioning award presented to an artist in the western states. The 2015 and 2016 Prizes were awarded respectively to Kate Weare and Diavolo’s Jacques Heim. Major support of the “Barney” Prize is from the Dorothy Lemelson Trust. Commissioning funds derive from the White Bird/MKG financial Group New Works fund.

ENGAGEMENTCommunity engagement is essential to White Bird. In September 2012 we presented our largest community event ever, Le Grand Continental, choreographed by Sylvain Émard, performed by 160 nonprofessional dancers of all ages, ethnicities and body types, in Pioneer Courthouse Square before an audience of over 5,000.
White Bird’s Annual Outreach Project with Portland Public Schools, reaching over 3,000 students and teachers, celebrated its 16th year in 2015/16, inspired by our first Cuban company Malpaso Dance Company. Virtually every dance company we bring offers a dance workshop to Portland area students and the professional dance community.

KEEP WHITE BIRD FLYINGAn Important Message from Paul and Walter
For 19 years White Bird, as the sole dance-only presenter west of the Rockies, has brought exciting, unique and outstanding dance around the world to the Portland community.
We have been able to do that at an affordable price, keeping to our mission of “making dance exciting, educational and affordable for everyone.”
However, we and our presenter colleaguesaround the country are facing rising costs as dance companies fees increase due to their own rising costs.
White Bird remains committed to bringing you the best dance companies we can find, complimented by educational and community activities, so people of all ages and backgrounds can have access to our exceptional artists.
BUT THE REALITY IS THAT TICKET PRICES ONLY COVER 50% OF OUR TOTAL BUDGET.
Please join the White Bird Flock and make a generous gift so we can continue to make a significant impact in our community.
Help us keep our vital programs alive so everyone in the Portland region—NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE—can enjoy the uplifting power of dance.
