The School of Dentistry has a strong commitment to community outreach, and our community oral health activities are an important part of both our education and service mission. Outreach experiences provide an opportunity for dental, dental therapy, and dental hygiene students to:

Develop a broad understanding of the community and social responsibilities they will have as dental profes-sionals;

Treat a diverse patient population with a variety of oral healthcare needs;

Enhance their clinical skills;

Participate in inter-professional learning experiences;

Involve students in community health promotion;

Promote dental opportunities at schools surrounding Greater Minnesota outreach sites.

In the final year of their dental education program, qualified dental, dental therapy, and dental hygiene students treat patients under faculty supervision in dental clinics affiliated with the School of Dentistry Outreach Division.

Outreach Division

Introducing students to life and practice in underserved communities.

The goal of the Outreach Division at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is to provide students with experiences that reinforce their knowledge of the principles of delivering oral health care, while providing needed dental services to a variety of patients, including underserved patient populations, in contemporary off-site clinical settings. Such experiences also enable students to participate in community oral health education, as well as dental career promotion and interprofessional education activities.
