Welcome to the 2010 Uffington White Horse Show, now in its 39th year. Last year’s show was judged by many to be the best for a long time. A combination of good weather and top class entertainment gave us our biggest crowd on a Sunday in the Show’s history, and equally large numbers on Monday saw visitors over the weekend topping 12,000. The Show also raised over £40,000 for local charities. It was such a huge success that the bar has really been raised for 2010. However, we’re up to the challenge and have put together a fantastic line-up of attractions that will appeal to all ages and tastes. We’ve com-bined lots of exciting new events with regular favourites that we know our visitors love. Topping the bill on Monday at this year’s Show will be Medieval Jousting from Gerard Naprous, who brought us the incredible Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse a few years ago. Described as ‘not for the faint hearted’, this mixture of lust and blood curdling action will bring colour and pageantry to our showground. Sunday will feature the magnificent Heavy Horses in what has become established as a qualifying competi-tion for the West of England Championships. Also, we have a very special first for Uffington: Joseph’s Amaz-ing Racing Pigs! We are also hoping for another spectacular flypast by the Vulcan Bomber, which had every-body talking last year. Falconry is always popular at our Show. For many years we have been splendidly entertained by Ray Prior and I am sure we will welcome him back again in the future. However, this year we have invited Jonathan Marshall, who has been the headline attraction at the British Falconry Fair and the Festival of Falconry for the last three years. Jonathan will be performing twice on both days – and he flies his birds from horseback, which adds to the spectacle. Fittingly for a country show like ours, horses provide a common theme in many of this year’s acts. Making their Uffington debut in 2010 will be Jive Pony. This glamorous female equestrian display team mixes the razzmatazz of West End musical shows with vaulting, gymnastics and a display of horsemanship that most could only dream of. Dogs too are a popular feature of country life and we regularly include outstanding canine acts in our pro-gramme. This year we have yet another ‘first’ for the Uffington Show with displays from Ridgeside Lurchers that will complement our falconry and jousting. We also have the regular outing of the Old Berks Hunt on Show Monday. And if all that’s not enough, we’ve invited back the Southern Syncopaters Jazz Band, who were such a hit at last year’s Show. Add to that our brilliant range of regular attractions including craft stalls, Professor Crump, ferret racing, his-toric vehicles, funfair, helicopter rides, backswording, White Horse Kites, Natural World Marquee, Morris dancing, a welcome return visit by the Merlin engines and lots, lots more … and you have the recipe for a phenomenal Bank Holiday weekend. See you there!

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC The Show Organisers accept no responsibility for any claim in respect of damage, loss or accident (whether fatal or otherwise) to any person, animal, vehicle, exhibit or property, howsoever caused, in connection with or arising from the Show and those concerned shall be deemed to have accepted this condition. Don’t forget to visit our website at www.whitehorseshow.co.uk, where you’ll find a gallery of pictures, links to many of the weekend’s performers and lots more information including, later in the year, details of the 2011 show! Make a note of the dates now: Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August 2011.

The White Horse Show Trust

The Uffington White Horse Show, which is run entirely by volunteers, was started 39 years ago to raise funds for a new Village Hall. Once the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall had been built and paid for, it was decided that the Show should continue as an annual event over August Bank Holiday weekend and the proceeds would be paid into a charitable trust to help community organisations in the villages of Uffington, Baulking and Woolstone. The White Horse Show Trust was formed and registered with the Charity Commission. The Trustees are pleased to confirm that in 2009 over £40,000 was received from the White Horse Show - our second highest total ever - and to date they have distributed £308,491.56. In 2009 the Trustees awarded grants totalling £85,325 as follows:

The White Horse Show is a registered charity Number 283779. Trustees: C P Avenell, V J Boaler, R D Kelsey MBE, J J Matthews, W W T Mattingley, W H Mitchell

Thanks: The Committee would like to thank:

• Charlie and Jude Craven for the use of this year’s showground

• The Compton Beauchamp Estate for the use of the car parking field

• Peter Martin and Alison Neale for designing this year’s leaflets, advertisements and pro-gramme

• Wantage and Shrivenham Army Cadets for selling the show programmes

• Baileys Printers of Alfreton and Albry Design & Print of Wallingford for printing the Show posters and leaflets

Litter Please help us to keep the showground clean and tidy. Please be sure to put all your litter in the litter bins provided, both on the showground and in the car parks. Thank you. Safety Pedestrians: Please beware of vehicles on the showground and car parking areas. Police Message We hope that you have an enjoyable time while at the Show but please try to avoid becoming a victim of crime. The Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall The Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall is located on the Jubilee Field in the centre of the beautiful village of Uffington. The new Hall was completed in 1975 and it replaced a wooden hut that was in a very poor state of repair. It was built with funds raised by the Uffington White Horse Show. In 1981 a further phase was com-pleted consisting of an additional smaller Hall, again funded by proceeds from the Show. Fund raising has carried on for many years to further improve the facilities. This includes a much larger kitchen, more storage space and a permanent stage. Construction began in April of this year and will complete in early September. The White Horse Show has been a major contributor to this development. If you would like to learn more and maybe consider hiring the Hall, visit www.thomashughesmemorialhall.co.uk . The Hall has very good facilities and includes a well equipped kitchen, warm air ducted heating, disabled toilet, baby changing facilities and a large car park. The Hall is used extensively by numerous local organisa-tions including Badminton, Mothers & Toddlers, Nursery School, Indoor Bowls, Senior Citizens, Brownies, Youth Club, W.I. and Martial Arts. It is also available for hire to persons living outside the local parishes. The Hall is ideal for special family functions, so if you want to know more about hiring it or would like more information about any of the activities, contact the booking clerk Josie Drew on 01367 820360.

Gerard Naprous and The Devil’s Horsemen For the main attraction at this year’s White Horse Show, we will be taking a step back in time to medieval days and enjoying the ex-citement of jousting with Gerard Naprous and The Devil’s Horsemen Stunt Team. Performing on Monday only, The Devil’s Horsemen are a team of medieval jousters who have performed all over Europe, as well as further afield. They have also featured in movies and their film credits include Robin Hood, Centurion, Dorian Gray, Easy Virtue, The Duchess, The Other Boleyn Girls, Da Vinci Code, Troy and Batman Returns. Their jousting tournaments are historically accurate and full of flair and breathtaking stunts, offering a mixture of lust and blood curdling action, a spectacle which is not for the faint hearted! This fabulous choreo-graphed performance includes knights in armour on horseback and a supporting cast of damsels, stewards and footmen all in period costume, performing a raft of stunts, all set to music and with live commentary. Watch the dashing hero, Harry Hotspur, battle with the villainous Black Knight for the hand of a fair maiden. Experience the din and clatter of medieval warfare as a team of feudal knights, squires and damsels knock 'seven bells' out of each other for your personal entertainment at the Quintain or in 'deadly combat! His display is unique as he does it all on horseback. Jonathan’s beautiful Lusitano stallion has been specially trained to work with birds of prey and makes this falconry display like no other. Falconry is one of the oldest hunting sports known to man and was originally practised on horseback. Seeing falcons flying at over 100mph and manoeuvring through the horse’s legs is a breathtaking spectacle. Jonathan will be performing two displays on both days and will have a static display of raptors which visitors can go and see throughout the day.

Southern Syncopaters Jazz Band

The Southern Syncopaters focus on creating a party atmosphere for every-one to enjoy and always take that extra step to ensure everyone is en-tertained. The band’s history goes back many years and has seen a few line-up changes, but they are now led by Swindon legend (or should that be Leg End?) Banjo Pete. Each member of the band has brought different musical influences and these combine into a unique style of swing-ing traditional British Jazz. For in-stance, Banjo Pete is a big Lonnie Donnegan fan, whilst drummer Dave “Stormin’ Norman” Prosser’s first love

is big band jazz. Man on the piano Graham Wiltshire’s main influence is the 60s and 70s pop scene and Bob Loveday the bassist was brought up on good old rock ’n’ roll. The rest of the band comprises the talents of Alan Bateman (trumpet), Frank Abrams (reeds) and Graham Alsworth (trombone). The band has played a variety of gigs, ranging from UK festivals, weddings, birthday parties, corporate events and local pubs, including many an evening playing at the world famous Trout Inn, on the river Thames at Lechlade. In fact, Frank, Pete and Stormin’, were part of the first band that ever played there ... For more information or to book the band visit their website: www.banjopete.co.uk

Ridgeside

Lurcher Display

Ridgeside Lurchers invites you to experience the full speed hunting abilities of the lurcher. In the arena they will race, at full speed, chasing the electric lure. The highlight of the demonstration is a race between the lurchers and a hawk - Ridgeside are the only demon-stration team to offer this amazing spectacle. The whole fast, action-packed demonstration is accompanied by an informative and humorous commentary by Phill. Aisle O’var Backswording Clubbe

Aisle O’var Backswording Clubbe are scholars and practitioners of the Ancient and Noble Science of De-fence and that most excellent of ancient country sports, English Country Backswording Circa 1600. Our main focus is in the study of the single-handed broadsword/backsword and the English Quarter-staff/Tip staff using the principles of the true fight as laid down by George Silver in his ‘Paradoxes of Defence’ in 1599 and his unpub-lished manuscript ‘A brief instruction upon my paradoxes of defence’ . We use many other historical trea-tises for our studies of Historical European Martial Arts in order that we practise a complete martial system.

We are often asked ‘What does the name Aisle O’var Backswording Clubbe mean?’ Aisle is a path between two things, like the aisle in a church for instance. O’var is an amalgamation of two words ‘of’ and ‘valour’. Valour means ‘To have strength of mind or spirit that enables somebody to encounter danger with firmness and personal bravery’. Therefore ‘Aisle O’var’ simply means ‘Path of Valour’. Backswording is the prac-tice and application of the backsword. A backsword is a single edged broadsword or like weapon, which has a sharp true edge and a flat/blunt false edge. It is also a term used to describe the ancient country sport of backswording where two players use wooden cudgels, which have wicker or wax hardened leather pots for hand protection and are used to bout with each other for a prize. Clubbe, pronounced ‘Club’, is a 12C to 15C Middle English word meaning a stick, club or cudgel with which you hit or strike. It is important to point out that what we do is not re-enactment, it is not choreographed and it is not theatrical in any way. This is full on English Country Backswording at its best and although our members wear an ar-ray of period costume this is simply to pay homage to the crack cudgel players of yesteryear and to place it in its historical context for the public. Country backswording was a sport played at events such as fayres, revels, wakes and church ales. In par-ticular it was one of the ‘pastimes’ played at the Scouring of the White Horse in Victorian times and is men-tioned in Thomas Hughes’ “Tom Brown’s Schooldays”, which makes it highly appropriate that Aisle O’var Backswording Clubbe should appear at the Uffington White Horse Show. We held our AOBC Ltd Inter club UK final at the White Horse Show for the first time in 2007 and we are proud to say that the event was so well received that the committee has invited us back to play for the cup again this year, for the third time. With the tournament arena overlooked by White Horse Hill it really is special for us to be fighting there, and many of the previous finalists have taken a moment before the start of the event to go up on to the hill and stand in Uffington Castle, the original home of the past times. Further information on the Aisle O’Var Backswording Clubbe can be found on their website: www.aobc.talktalkbusiness.net

Welcome once again to the old motorcycle gathering at the Uffing-ton White Horse Show. The classic bikes and their keepers are another year older, and there is at least one very sad gap in the ranks. Pete Sole, Swindon-based rider and award-winning restorer, who created amazing vintage and veteran British confections, under-taking all the restoration processes himself in the most basic environ-ment of his own shed, has passed on. The last time we talked, not knowing he was unwell again, I had rung to ask him a favour. He told me frankly, typical Pete, about his termi-nal condition; but, even more typi-cally, did not, even under those circumstances, forget to tell me about someone else who could help me. Pete Sole exemplified not just the skill and perseverance needed to produce a top-class rideable restoration, but also the good humour and the immediate, unqualified willingness to help each other which is the very best thing about the old bike movement. So please enjoy the nostalgic sight, smell and sound of the machines, from Ariel to Zundapp, in the paddock or on parade in the ring for the prize-giving, by myself and fellow judge and “RealClassic” colleague Dave Minton, on Sunday afternoon. But also perhaps give a moment’s thought to the story behind each of these old heroes; and if you are interested, do please ask their riders what that tale might be. Steve Wilson The Historic Motorcycles judges this year are Steve Wilson and Rollo Turner.

Sing to God new songs of worship

White Horse Show Songs of Praise Have you ever worshipped God in the open air along with a crowd of like-minded people? If not, come along and join us for a short service by the Main Arena at 5pm on Sunday afternoon. We shall sing some of the nation’s best-known and well-loved hymns and then round off with a short prayer ... but as last year we will also have a baptism during the service. Please do come and join us: I hope your favourite hymn will be among our selection!

Historic Vehicles

Generously sponsored by Soft Options - water treatment specialists.

ww.soft-options.net Visit their stand at the show! I am writing this piece shortly after a visit to the Bristol Classic Car Show. As always at such events the car park was as interesting as the exhibition itself, with the added assurance that the classic cars outside in the rain had made it under their own power; whereas looking at a highly restored or over polished exhibit you are left with the sneaking suspicion that it might have been brought on a trailer. No such possibility with any of the vehicles on display here today. In all the years that it has been my privilege to visit the White Horse Show I have never seen a car brought in on a trailer. The owners are as interesting and as varied as their cherished motors. Many have stories of rescue, rehabili-tation and restoration against all the odds; and their cars have fascinating histories too. All members of the Historic Vehicle team wish you every enjoyment as you take a trip back in time with yester-day’s cars, many of which still provide excellent service even in today’s traffic. Have a great day. Tim Hills The Historic Vehicles judges this year are Tim Hills, Dave Pearcey, Barbara and John Frak, Chris Holley and Clive Avenell.

3 Counties Egg Throwing Championship

The sport of egg throwing has taken place in Uffington for many years and in 1998 we brought it to the main arena of the White Horse Show with great success. The idea is to throw an egg (raw) to your partner who must catch it. After each throw both rows of people take a step back and repeat the procedure. If you break your egg, you both drop out. Eventually only one pair are left who will be presented with this year’s trophy. The competition takes place in the main arena on Monday afternoon at 4pm, preceded by a short demon-stration from village ‘eggsperts’. This event is open to all age groups and is completely FREE. To enter, just come along to the main arena when the start of the egg throwing is announced. Each year more and more people participate in this event, and we would like this to be the biggest egg throwing competition ever seen in this part of the world (or indeed anywhere else). So don’t hesitate to come and join in; it’s great fun. The committee is most grateful to Cottage Farm Eggs, who once again have been kind enough to provide the eggs for this event.

WTF Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do is a traditional Martial Art originating from Korea. We practise the World Taekwondo Federa-tion (WTF) variety, which is the type of Tae Kwon Do you may have seen in the Olympics. Translated into English, Tae Kwon Do means "Hand foot way", or "To break with hands and feet". Tae Kwon Do is best known for spectacular kicking techniques. However, in order to be able to perform such tech-niques, one must first master the basics of the Art. There are ten "Kup" grades between White Belt and Black Belt, with different coloured belts being used to show the progress a student has made. The Uffington Tae Kwon Do classes take place in the Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall on a Wednesday, with a Junior class for children under 11 at 6.15pm and a Senior class for adults and children with higher grades taking place at 7.30pm. A class also runs in Bishopstone Village Hall on Tuesdays at 7.30pm. Beginners are always welcome.

Danzone DANZONE is a young, fresh and contemporary dancing school with outlets in Uffington, Swindon and Lyne-ham. With the emphasis on fun as much as academic achievement, students learn choreographed dance routines to their favourite chart songs and music. This year’s performance on Monday in the main arena will be the fifth time they have performed at the White Horse Show, on the back of successful performances at various events throughout the year, including on stage at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon. On Saturday morn-ings in Uffington Village Hall there are Danzone classes for children of all ages and the school also offers holiday fun-days and specialised children’s dance parties. The Friday Night Performance Project With Josh & Jones! Sarah Josh and Clare Jones have set up a senior performance group. Both Sarah and Clare trained in dance and have a wealth of experience in teaching and choreography and a passion to perform. With this in mind, in November 2008 they set up the Friday Night Project which trains every Friday night in Swindon. The class is designed for students with previous dance training from 12-20yrs of age. The idea is to complement the stu-dents’ existing training and to work on performance skills. We have performed in many different locations this year and are really excited to be invited to the White Horse Show 2009. For more information contact Clare at [email protected] or 07876 256739.

Morris Dancing in the Vale of the White Horse

Morris Dancing has been performed in England for over 500 years and in Oxfordshire since the 16th cen-tury. The Churchwarden’s records indicate that Morris dancing took place in Wantage between the years 1550 – 1650 with payments being made for bells, costumes and musicians. Icknield Way Morris Men are a nationally known side that perform at festivals, weddings, parties and shows all over the country, but mainly in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire. They have also appeared in television productions ‘Midsomer Murders’ and ‘The Tudors, series 2’. They perform traditional dances from Oxfordshire villages including Adderbury, Bampton, Ducklington, Bledington and Leafield as well as the whole repertoire of dances recovered from Stanton Harcourt of which they are the guardians. They also have many musicians and can provide all round entertainment for many occasions.

“They dance for joy. And joy represents the true spirit of England”

“… each man foot perfect … singing in harmony …” quote by Lord Hattersley in the Daily Mail, 3rd May 2005 after spending an evening with the Side.

The side celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2009 and are always pleased to welcome new members. If you would like to support or hire the Icknield Way Morris Men, or get further information, see their website www.icknieldwaymorrismen.org.uk or phone 01367 820259.

Hounds of the Old Berks Hunt

We are delighted once again to welcome the Hunt, who have supported the Show since it started. A tradi-tional part of the English countryside, the Hunt is a magnificent, colourful spectacle which presents an oppor-tunity to see some fine horses and splendid working dogs. The hounds appear by kind permission of the joint Masters.

White Horse Kite Flyers

The "Flyers" were founded by Neil Harvey and the late Ron Gunter back in 1987, and soon grew to a club of high repute, with a membership now approaching 200+ strong; they are also Founder Members of the British Kite Flying Association and Affiliates of its American counterpart, the AKA. WHKF build and fly all forms and shapes of kites and provide enjoyment and fun for all the family, be they 5 or 105!! Their main regular event is an all-day Kite Fly-in at Barbury Castle (near Wroughton, Swindon), on the second Sunday of each month. They regularly organise Kite Workshops, Demonstrations, Teddy Bear Parachute Drops, etc. at local fetes, schools and other events in the area, and also organise the Annual International Kite Festival at Swindon on the weekend after the May Day Bank Holiday – there’s lots to do and see at this event and it’s very popular with the locals, with some 5,000 in attendance!

Though their name suggests they’re a local club, membership of the White Horse Kite Flyers knows no geo-graphical bounds – with members from London, Bristol, Brighton, Portsmouth, Gloucester and Banbury; they even have members across the world in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Canada as well as strong links with the Westport Windriders in Washington State, America.

WHKF is best known as a "Single Line" club because of the selection of large parafoil and flowform kites the club displays throughout the country, some of which are the largest in Great Britain. Seems like the club members just like setting records! But don't think it ends there, because this is the home of the "Ted Berets", Arthur Dibble's parachuting fauna, and Vic Walker, the Class One Parachuting Teddy Bear record holder, with an amazing 100 Teddy Bears parachuting in one go. Sports kites also hold their own in the club, which is home to team "Matrix Management", one of the top ten teams of the World Championships. A newer de-velopment for the club has been the kite building workshops for kite flyers that Dave Robinson has run over the last few years, usually in February and October. So there you have it, not just a club, more a way of life!

The Natural World Marquee

Alpacas Following their highly successful presence at last year’s show, we are de-lighted to welcome back Tippens Wood Alpacas. They will be showing some of these lovely timid creatures that look as though they must have been the mod-els for children’s Teddy Bears! Each one is an individual and the antics they perform just have to be seen to be believed. They are native to the Andes Mountains in South America, the high terraces of Peru, Bolivia and Chile. They have been kept in herds similar to the way we keep sheep in Britain. The fleece from the alpaca is made into high quality garments that rival cashmere and mohair. Tippens Wood will be displaying some of the goods that can be produced from their fleeces, so come along and find out more about these exotic animals. More information at www.tippenswood.com

Farms 2 Ewe “Farms 2 Ewe” have now become one of the mainstays of The Natural World Area - with Guinea Pig World, pony grooming and other assorted small animals, miniature ponies, chickens and ducks. This is your chance to ‘get up close’ and to handle the animals, as they are all incredibly tame and used to being handled. The children particularly will delight in this activity AND they can have their faces painted too! For more informa-tion see: www.farms2ewe.co.uk

World of Otters This year for the first time we are delighted to have Daphne Neville and her famous otters Belinda and Ber-tie, and young Rudi for both days. Now our Sunday visitors won’t miss out on the opportunity to meet these incredibly cute and playful animals - the otter’s joy of life is quite contagious.

Belinda and Bertie are Asian Short-Clawed Otters (Amblonyx cinereus), and Daphne has reared them from tiny cubs. Rudi (more formally named Master Bee) joined Daphne, Bertie and Belinda when he was 10 weeks old. They are incredibly tame, especially Belinda who is a very gentle otter, and sister to Beenie, the famous painting otter. Belinda is a TV star in her own right, with one of her most significant roles playing the part of Mora the Otter in Channel 5’s series “The Secret of Eel Island” which was shown in 2005. Daphne is a well-known actor, and also does speaking engagements on a variety of topics including "Otter on my Shoulder". She is a lovely lady, with a great sense of humour and a very gentle spirit. For more information about Daphne and her otters see www.sophieneville.co.uk/BEENIE/mainmenu.html Of course we retain our regular favourites: snakes, spiders, scorpions, bees, weaving, spinning and candle making, birds of prey and poultry. The Cotswold Pheasant & Poultry Club will have on show a wide variety of poultry – ranging from the more ‘normal’ farmyard hens to those that look as though they’ve had their plumage styled by an eccentric hairdresser. So why not go along and learn what it takes to keep chickens, and maybe you too can soon be enjoying the taste of your own chicken’s eggs!

Horse-drawn Carriage Rides Fancy having a ride around the show in a horse drawn carriage? Well you can! Celebration Carriages will again be at the Show offering rides in their glorious carriage - more often used for weddings and other special occa-sions. And of course you'll have a chance to get up close to the fabulous horses in all their finery, and talk to Clive and his team. You can find out more about Celebration Carriages at www.celebration-carriages.co.uk

Ferret Racing

The Hants and Berks Ferret Club are a group of ferret enthusiasts based in the North Hampshire/Berkshire area. Our main aim as a club is to promote the welfare of working, domestic and rescued ferrets. During the summer months we attend public events such as fetes, fairs, country shows and displays in the Hants/Berks area, and in doing so we hope to familiarise the general public with the care and handling of ferrets whilst dispelling commonly-held misconceptions - not forgetting, of course, to have some fun while we're at it! We've visited some lovely places with our ferrets over the years, including Lulworth Castle and the Royal County of Berkshire Show (formerly known as the Newbury Show). A recent survey indicated that ferrets are the third most popular pet in the UK, yet many people still see them as smelly, aggressive creatures - who insist on climbing up the nearest trouser leg! To those who may be-lieve this: we challenge you to visit our stand and prepare to be converted. At the Show we will be holding races throughout the day. Use your skill to pick the winning ferret. The louder you cheer for your chosen ferret, the faster it will go! We have an exciting new game: “Roulette”, which will run periodically through the day. In the Ferret Activity Centre you can see ferrets playing with the various toys we provide for them, giving you an idea of the character and personality of these creatures. You can handle and make friends with them, and have any questions answered by our staff. We look forward to see-ing you there!

Island Farm Donkeys

During your time here today, make sure you visit the donkeys from Island Farm, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, near Wallingford. These lovely animals have all been rescued – some were neglected and near starvation, others were bought from livestock markets where they could have been taken abroad for slaughter. The hard work at the donkey sanctuary started in 1983 with the rescue of a pony called Penny and progressed on to don-keys in 1993. After many months of care and rehabilitation these donkeys are now fit and well. The Centre is often visited by special needs schools from around the county which allows small groups of disabled children to pet and ride the donkeys. Four of the donkeys - Chocolate, Jumpin’ Jack, Charlie and Fred - even became TV stars when they were filmed for a children’s series called “The Phoenix and the Carpet” in 1997. Visitors are always welcome at Island Farm, to see the donkeys and find out more about the work that goes on there. Please pick up a leaflet at the stand.

Helicopter Rides over the Vale

If you fancy having that special ‘thrill of a lifetime’ experience, just wander across to the flying site and meet the Elite Helicopters team who will be pleased to help you. Take off from the showground in a Bell 206B Jet Ranger helicopter and enjoy a wonderful flight giving you a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area, including of course the White Horse itself. Flights are approximately five minutes in duration and cover 8–10 nautical miles operating at between 1,000 and 1,500 feet at a speed of around 150mph.

Elite Helicopters are a charter company with bases at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire and Goodwood Aerodrome on the South Coast. Created in 1994, they provide helicopter services at many prestigious events including the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival, the Grand National, the Epsom Derby, Henley Royal Re-gatta, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood and the British Grand Prix. This will be the 14th year that Elite Helicopters has been involved in providing helicopter pleasure flights for the public at the White Horse Show and demand is always high.

Grand Funfair

The White Horse Show Committee is pleased that once again Hebborns’ Grand Funfair will be at the Show. Harry Hebborn and his family have supported the White Horse Show for over 30 years and we now have the third generation of Hebborns in attendance. No Show would be complete without them. We’re al-ways delighted when Harry and his Grand Funfair arrive on the showfield, as during the course of the Show ‘build-up’ Harry is always willing to lend a hand - even if the hand belongs to one of his boys! As always the funfair will have lots of sideshows with great prizes to be won by luck or skill. You’ll also find some fantastic rides like the Twister, and of course the Dodgems. So be sure to visit Hebborns’ fair while you’re at the Show!

Fairground Organ

We are delighted to welcome back Mr Read with his magnificent fairground organ. Capable of playing a huge range of tunes from marches to the Beatles, this remarkable instrument adds really tremendous atmos-phere to our Show.

Army Cadets: Lest we forget, 1940 - Seventy Years On

In the context of the war in Afghanistan, it is perhaps timely to reflect on events in 1940. Whilst in February the Royal Navy's successful rescue of 299 captured seamen from the German prison ship, Altmark, started the year on a positive note, subsequent events were dire. The Germans overran Norway, Belgium and Hol-land, and by June had conquered France, forcing the epic Dunkirk evacuation by the "Little Ships", Merchant and Royal Navy of 335,490 British and Allied troops. Britain, supported by the Dominions, stood alone and Hitler determined to invade our country, an ambition defeated by the RAF's victory in the Battle of Britain, which lasted from July until mid-September with the loss of 1,733 German and 915 British aircaft. This success was reinforced by the Fleet Air Arm's victory at Taranto, prompting Prime Minister Winston Churchill's epic comment that "should the British Empire last a thousand years, this was their finest hour". So, mindful of the past and in support of today's Armed Services, please support our Army Cadets who will be making a collection around the showground in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and Afghan Heroes. The Cadets will also be selling CDs and DVDs of "Forever Young - A Song for Wootton Bassett" to raise money for Afghan Heroes. The Wantage and Shrivenham Army Cadets parade at Watchfield on Monday nights from 7.30pm.

Merlin Engines, Historic Tractors, Stationary and Steam Engines

and Tractor Skills Competitions Uffington White Horse Show is always proud of its col-lection of tractors, steam and stationary engines and farming collections, and this year is no exception as we have a fantastic range of machinery on view throughout the show weekend. This year we are delighted to welcome back Mr Peter Grieve from Carlisle with two of his beautiful Merlin en-gines from the 1940s. These enormous V12 engines have been lovingly restored and simply have to be heard to be appreciated!

We have at least 30 historic tractors on display this year, including some which were made more than half a century ago. They include Mr L Davies’ 1954 Nuffield, Mr E.F. Griffiths’ 1957 Allis Chalmers and Mr S Black-well’s fascinating International Harvester from 1968. Since its beginning, The White Horse Show has had support from a dedicated group of enthusiasts who spend their winter months renovating farm machinery and power units which they come across, sometimes in ditches and often in pieces. Many originate from the early part of the last century and have been brought back to their original working condition after many hours of work. Once again we are expecting an excellent display of around 50 stationary and steam engines, and some of these are even older than the Historic Trac-tors. Amongst those on display will be Mr R. Sandford’s 1935 Petterm, Mr A Hale’s Lister D sheepshearing machine from 1938, and Mr J Clelford’s Lister J Tyler Deep Well Pump. Another interesting piece of machin-ery is Mr D.R. Clarke’s Wisconsin with windmills from 1951. There will also be some more modern engines on display including Mr P Walsh’s 2002 Foster and Mr M Day’s 2001 Ruston steam engines, and Dr David Reed’s 1981 Model 4 steam traction engine which was built by father and son over a 12 year period. Finally there will be a collection of farming and domestic by-gones put together by Mrs Anne Harris and Mr Rodney Rowland from Clanfield, and a range of vintage gar-den machinery and hand tools assembled by Mr R. Foulds from Bourton-on-the-Water. We will also be holding our ever popular Tractor Skills Competition. This is open to anyone over the age of 16 and costs just £2 to enter, with the winner receiving half the total entry money. Come and try your hand at Bal-ancing Skills and the Tractor and Trailer Challenge. We are very grateful to Mr Patrick Edwards who has kindly loaned a tractor and trailer for the Competi-tion, and we would also like to thank Laura Davis for doing such a good job organising the Competi-tion. The Judges on the day are: Col. D. J. Bateman and Mr B. Wothers (historic tractors), Mr D. Stevens (stationary engines). Special thanks to the stewards, Mr D.J. Clarke and Mr C. Witchell.

W.I. Coconut Shy

Uffington, Baulking and Woolstone W.I. is a dynamic group that offers a variety of activities for members to enjoy. We haven’t (yet?) attempted a calendar, but we do have a go at most things. At our monthly meetings, as well as providing an opportunity to socialise and make new friends, we are generally entertained by a fascinating talk. This may be about anything from wildlife to history, growing herbs to looking at works of art, First Aid to a ‘granny’ sailing single-handed up The Gambia … the list of topics is always growing. In addi-tion, there are walks, craft afternoons, outings, workshops and parties, not to mention the events organised by OFWI. These have included riveting literary talks by Colin Dexter, Veronica Stallwood and Gervaise Phinn. UBW WI is a great group to belong to. For anyone interested in finding out more, notices are regularly dis-played at The Post Office Stores, Uffington, or you could come along to our coconut shy at the White Horse Show to check out our future programme and test your throwing skills at the same time.

Models We are very grateful to Mr J Scutts who has again assembled a fantastic collection of models for our Show. In previous years these have included a farmyard, gypsy encampment, canal boats, caravans and horse drawn vehicles, steam engines and early yesteryear toys. We are delighted to welcome to this year’s Show the following exhibitors who have painstakingly created these models for you to see and enjoy:

Chocolate Fountain

Raising funds for St Mary’s Church Uffington will be our delicious Chocolate Fountain. Indulge yourself! Try a luscious fruit ‘kebab’ drenched in gorgeous liquid chocolate. Scrummy!

Barrow of Booze Raffle

As you walk round the showground keep an eye out for someone pushing a wheelbarrow full of whisky, wine, bubbly, beer and other alcoholic beverages. Sadly this is not a mobile bar (our bar staff will be very happy to serve you in the beer tent if you are feeling thirsty) but on Show Sunday, and again on Monday, we are raffling the barrow and its liquid contents to raise funds for Baulking Church. Last year’s raffles (and donations) raised enough money to provide a slap-up lunch for some of Uffington’s senior citizens, so well done everyone and thank you to all who took part. Try your luck again this year - just buy some raffle tickets from the ‘pusher’, and all those lovely drinks could be yours – plus a barrow to push them home in!

Catering

Once more we are pleased to welcome Cohen’s Catering, who will provide a vast range of food from tradi-tional burgers, hot dogs, fish and chips and pork rolls to a vegetarian selection, as well as ice creams, sweets, pancakes and more.

Bar We’d like to extend a warm welcome to The Outside Inn Company, who will be running our bar for the first time, as well as providing some entertainment on Sunday evening. The Outside Inn Company offers a com-prehensive service for any event. As well as serving up real ales, draught beers, spirits and wines, they can hire out hog roasters, bar furniture and a variety of pub games. Heavy Horses Only 60 years ago, before farms were fully mechanised, heavy horses were a common sight in the country-side, working in the fields and pulling carts. After World War II they became virtually redundant and during the next 20 years seemed to be on the brink of extinction. Fortunately, these magnificent horses had many supporters and today their future is assured. It is a stirring sight to see a parade of heavy horses on show. An average heavy horse weighs around a ton and is capable of pulling enormous weights. Horses are meas-ured in ‘hands’, each hand being equivalent to four inches. The measurement is taken from the ground to the top of the shoulders (withers). The long hair on the lower leg is known as ‘feather’. Britain has four main breeds of heavy horse:

THE SHIRE The Shire originates from the ‘Heart of England’. With deep shoulders, a short, strong, muscular back, a wide chest and sweeping quarters, the head is heavy and the legs are powerful with an abundance of feather. Body col-our is black, brown, bay or grey and average height is 17.2 hands.

THE CLYDESDALE Named after the old name for Lanarkshire, the Clydesdale was the heavy horse of Scotland. Standing much the same height as the Shire, the strong body has a short back with broad quarters and high withers. Colours are similar to the Shire but there tends to be more white on the legs and belly.

THE SUFFOLK PUNCH The great golden horse of Suffolk is well named, for it is a short-coupled, punchy horse capable of working well in all gears. Standing at 16 hands and always chest-nut in colour, although a white star on the forehead is permitted. The body is deep and round with powerful shoulders and quarters. The strong rather short legs are free from feather.

THE PERCHERON The Percheron originated in the Perche region of France. Brought over here after the First World War, the breed spread rapidly throughout Britain. Grey or black in colour and stand-ing at 16.3 hands, the body is very strong with a short back, deep shoulders and powerful quarters. The head is refined and the strong legs are free from feather.

Peter Davis

It is with deep regret that we have to report that Peter Davis recently passed away. Peter was an important contributor to the success of our Heavy Horse Show and for many years did an outstanding job as Commentator. We offer our sincere sympathy to his friends and family.
