1.0 Background This March 2012 Status Report provides a progress summary of the Geotechnical Investigation and monitoring of the White Point Landslide for the period of February 28, 2012 to March 27, 2012. The Bureau of Engineering (BOE) continues to oversee and support the geotechnical investigation of the landslide being conducted by Shannon & Wilson, Inc., a private consulting firm. Attached to this report are the March 28, 2012 Status Report by Shannon & Wilson, Inc. (Attachment 1) and a Summary of Survey Monitoring Points by the Bureau of Engineering (Attachment 2). 2.0 Site Observations and Activities for the Period February 28, 2012 to March 27, 2012 Shannon & Wilson, Inc. continue with the geotechnical investigation of the landslide and currently is near complete with stability analyses and is formulating conceptual mitigation alternatives. The Draft Geotechnical Report is being prepared and is expected to be competed by early May. 3.0 Landslide Monitoring for the Period February 28, 2012 to March 27, 2012 Survey Monitoring The BOE continues to survey the established survey monitor stations and monitor points set on the street, curb and ground around the landslide to check for evidence of ground movement which might indicate landslide movement or enlargement. A summary table of the survey monitoring is provided in Attachment 2. The survey data as of the date of this report shows no indication of surface ground movement which might signal landslide enlargement. Instrument Monitoring Geologists from both BOE and Shannon & Wilson, Inc. continue to conduct site observation of the landslide and surrounding area. As described in Attachment 1, Shannon & Wilson, Inc. continues with the inclinometer monitoring (measurement of devices that were placed in some borings to detect ground movement) and water well readings. This monitoring continues to show no significant movement. 4.0 Geotechnical Investigation A status report prepared by Shannon & Wilson, Inc. and dated March 29, 2012 is presented in Attachment 1. This report summarizes the progress of the Geotechnical investigation through March 27, 2012. As indicated in the report, Shannon & Wilson, Inc. has completed the field investigation and laboratory analyses and is near completion of the stability analyses. Shannon & Wilson, Inc. report that no new significant ground cracks have been observed in the area between the fence and main landslide mass during the latest monitoring period.

This letter provides an update to the subtask status for the period ending March 27, 2012. Shannon & Wilson is currently performing a subsurface investigation of the White Point Landslide following significant movement of the landslide on November 20, 2011. During the course of our services, we have not observed new surface cracks related to landslide movement outside of the fenced perimeter of the landslide. We have recorded recent groundwater depths in the inclinometer borings and wells that were installed along the landslide perimeter (Figure 1). During the most recent reporting period, the groundwater surface was measured at depths ranging from approximately 50 to 100 feet below ground surface. Groundwater levels measured within the completed wells and inclinometers appear to be relatively stable with only minor fluctuations (Table 1).
As previously reported, we believe the projected landslide failure plane is about 100 feet deep in the area of the active landslide. Ongoing visual observation of the existing cracks adjacent to the main head scarp within the fenced-off area suggest that the material immediately adjacent to the scarp is moving or rotating into the graben area. We expect to see periodic detachment of the scarp material throughout the winter and upcoming spring months. It is also likely that the main landslide mass will continue to move ocean-ward and likely accelerate during and after periods of heavy precipitation. No new significant ground cracks have been observed in the area between the fence and main landslide mass during the latest monitoring period. Some minor ground cracks related to soil wetting and drying (soil expansion cracks) were noted along the perimeter hiking trail on our March 15 site visit. It was also noted on our March 26 site visit that many of the surface ground cracks along the perimeter hiking trail have vanished, most likely

due swelling caused by the recent heavy rain. Readings of the installed inclinometers indicate that no measurable ground movement has occurred in the areas of the inclinometers (Table 2). These conclusions are preliminary and are subject to change as our studies develop.

TASKS COMPLETED FOR THIS PERIOD
For this work period, tasks completed include:
Instrumentation reading dates shown in Tables 1 and 2. Instrumentation will be read on monthly basis for the subsequent months to monitor the landslide area for groundwater elevations and possible subsurface movement.
Site observations for landslide movement during the weeks of 3/12/12, 3/19/12, and 3/26/12. Based on visual observations, no ground fractures related to ground movement have appeared at the fenced perimeter of the landslide area.
Geologic mapping of the landslide graben and slope area west of the landslide. Project Team Meetings with the City of Los Angeles BOE at the downtown office, and
field meetings on site. Observations inside of fenced area for ground crack growth.
