I also have some news for those interested in the Langtree, Devon families. One of the things Jim Whitelock of Plymouth, John Whitlock of London and I all seem to agree on is that the Thomas Whitlock who heads this family is the one who died in 1715. It is also becoming clear that Thomas' father must be the Richard Whitlock who died in 1687. The work that Jim Whitelock has been doing with land deeds for this period points to it being more than coincidence that the 1687 deeds are dated the same day as probate was granted for Richard's will. This will be the first generation we have been able to add to this family in nearly twenty years!! . Our thanks also to Keith Whitlock for the material he collected during a visit to the Langtree area and his comments on possible areas of research. There have been so many exciting things happen since the last Newsletter I was a bitconcerned I was not going to be able to fit everything in this issue.

I will start with the news concerning both the Connecticut families and the descendants ofAbraham and Rose (Whitlock) Parker, Norris Whitlock has come across the first clue I haveseen that I think gives us renewed hope we will be able to unravel the mystery of RoseWhitlock. It also tells us that the wife of John Whitlock (d.1658) who heads the Connecticutfamilies, was probably not Rose as has been shown for some years. Details of this find aregiven in the "Early Massachusetts Whitlocks" article in this issue. Our sincere thanks to Norrisfor this.

Next is the terrific progress we have been able to make on the Carolinas families in the pastfew months. Betty 'Hallowell has had some unbelievable luck that borders on freaky. Alongwith a series of coincidences where each contact Betty made seemed to be connected in two ormore ways Betty told me of a visit she made to a Historical Society while on holiday thissummer. lames Whitlock of Ware and Gloucester Counties, Virginia acted as Power of Attorney forAnthony Whitlock of Lambeth, Surrey, the heir to his Uncle Thomas Whitlock (1615-1659)following the death of Thomas' son Thomas in 1678 before age 21. If lames and Anthonycalled themselves kinsmen for the sole reason thatthey both had thename Whitlock and theyreally are not connected then James Whitlock could be part of the Kent Whitlocke family andhave been connected to both the Rouzies and the Catlets. This may bear a bit of investigationbefore eliminating it as a possibility.

I was interested to see in an item that Elaine Radosevic sent in (NP191) that there is aWhitlock senator in the US. Sen. Louis Whitlock, D-Carlsbad, New Mexico. Can anyone finda bit of biographical information that might tell us how he fits into the family?

These are just a few highlights of the information that continues to come in. Our thanks to allof you for your contributions.

I noticed in a rather fat publication called "Family Associations" that Chuck Rockett's nameand address were listed under "Whitlock". I have seen this listing in several different places soour thanks to Chuck for getting us into these publications. I have also taken a listing in the1992 Genealogical Research Directory which was originally out of Australia but now seems tobe a worldwide publication. .

Enclosed with this issue is the financial statement for 1991 and our renewal form for 1992.We have had a very successful year and I hope you continue to enjoy the Newsletters will bewilling to support our research for another year. We had a record 127 subscribers to theNewsletter this year as I know several of you used them as rather unique Christmas presents toother members of your families. We also did a roaring business in back-issues this year to thepoint where I had to have new sets of some of them made.

In the past I have said that subscriptions can be paid in stamps and it has worked well forseveral years. I now find that we nave been a bit too successful in Australia and New Zealandand I cannot trade the volume of stamps I am getting from those two countries. Returnpostage is still fine in New Zealand and Australian stamps but I would appreciate subscriptionsfrom those countnes be paid another way, If pOSSIble. While on the subject of stamps I noticethe British postage has gone up to 39p and the US is now 40 cents' and their is talk of postagegoing up again here! You can see from the statement that postage is by far the greatestexpense our Association incurs. I had intended to purchase both stationery and envelopes forthe first time ever this year but unearthed another box of 1,000 envelopes that had beendiscarded when our corporate logo had changed in 1986 so had more letterhead photocopiedand am set for another couple of years. .

I have a couple of corrections to make. Page 8 of the March 1991 issue, ML102. The lastline should read Helen ARENSBERG, no extra "G", sorry Helen. Also page 5 September1991, the "Boudinot (Boot) Whitlock" article. While this information was sent in by BettyHallowell she wished it to be made clear this article was written by Mr. Guest and ISpart of abook he is putting together on the Colbert and Whitlock families. Sorry for the confusion.

Included with this issue is an index articles in Volumes 4 to 10. Before this the Newsletter wasannual and not broken down into articles. Hope this is of help.

Best wishes to all of you and your families for the holiday season and good luck in yourresearch in 1992.

HENRY WHITLOCK,COACHBUILDERI have written several articles about the Whitlock Automobile Co. of Holland Gate, Londonand have mentioned that the firm evolved from a coachbuilding business established in 1778.This article will elaborate on those coachbuilding origins.

The assumption has been that Henry Whitlock founded the business but our research hasshown that Henry was not born until 1786-96 so the details relating to the date 1778 are stillobscure. I have speculated previously that it may have been Henry's father, Robert whoactually started the business and there is a possibility that Henry also could have taken over anexisting firm. Further research will hopefully make this point clear.

The mid-nineteenth century was the heyday of coachbuilding and the Whitlock coaches weresome of the best. A 1969 letter from Henry's great-grandson, Henry Cecil Whitlock may giveus a clue to this success. Henry Cecil writes, "...I believe it was his patent springing that made

the Whitlocks coaches so renowned. I have been told that the present Queen's state visitorscoach, known as the 'Irish Coach' is one built by Henry Whitlock for Queen Victoria. There isa coach by Henry Whitlock in the Science Museum, West Kensin&ton, London and another inthe Norwich Museum, Norfolk, there's also another in use by the Royal Artillery' for specialoccasions at Sandhurst." . .

Henry Cecil's comments about the Whitlocks being coach builders to Queen Victoria areconfirmed by a reference to the City Directories for the time which show the phrase "bySpecial Appointment to the Royal Family" as early as 1871. Also at the 1883 Sportsman'sEXhibition Henry Whitlock, Carriage BUIlder is listed as operating from factories at HollandPark and Turnham Green still showing "by Royal Appointment".

The Henry Whitlock referred to in 1883 is the son, Henry John Whitlock as his father haddied in 1863. The father's will wasproved May 11, 1863 with effects under 7,000 pounds. Athis death, Henry held property in Chiswick, Hammersmith, Walworth Road, Surrey andMargate, Kent and left his eight surviving children well provided for. The business he madefamous continued to do specialized chassis work into the age of the automobile and despite .being sold in the early 1900's the Cricklewood operation continued as The Whitlock MotorCo. until finally closing in 1990.

EARLY MASSACHUSETTSWHITLOCKSThe following extracts from the Essex County, Salem Quarterly Court records located at theEssex Institute were sent in by Norris Whitlock:

June 1643 John Whitlock fined 20 shillings for neglecting the Watch!

July 1643 John Whitlock has fine partly abated, at the request of Mr.Norrice in writing.

December 1643 Rose Whitlock v. Francs Tharly, for unjustmolestation. Released each other from any "Lyes (Tyes?ed.) or Bondsconcerning mariage"

These records are very important as I think they give us two major clues. The first relates tothe Whitlocks of Connecticut as it has been assumed that this John Whitlock and RoseWhitlock were husband and wife and later moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, becoming thefounders of that line of the family.

There has always been some question relating to the name of John Whitlock's wife as somedocuments f0int to Sarah Hirsch as his wife. The above extracts seem to indicate that RoseWhitlock 0 Salem could not be John Whitlock's wife as she was contemplating marriage toFrancs Tharly in December 1643.

This brings us to the second major clue. If Rose broke off her intention to marry FrancsTharly in December 1643, does it not make her the most likely candidate to be the RoseWhitIock who married Abraham Parker on November 18,1644 at Woburn, Massachusetts? This would fit with our theory that Rose was about age 20 in 1644.

What remains unanswered is the relationship between John Whitlock and Rose Whitlock. Ifthis John Whitlock is the one who died in 1658 at Fairfield, Connecticut then he must havebeen fairly young in 1643. We have estimated his son David was born in the 1650's as weknow his grandson, David was born in 1681. John's widow married Henry Whelpley and diedabout 1661, still a young woman. This would indicate that if there is a relationship betweenJohn and Rose that it was more likely brother and sister than father and daughter.

This is the first indication we have had that there might be a connection between theWhitlocks of Connecticut and the descendants of Abraham and Rose (Whitlock) Parker andhopefully more information will come to light. There are a couple of other references to JohnWhitlock of Salem that might be of interest: .

The Probate Records of Essex County list the estate of Isabel West ofSalem, October 30,1644. Included in a Debt due from John Whitlockof 3 pounds

The History of Salem 1626-1637 mentions that in 1650 John Whitlockwas the owner of lot #57 and first recorded in Salem in 1643.

The Essex Antiquarian of April 1904 (Vol.VII, No.2) mentions thatJohn Whitlock owned the western half of this and the Masury lot veryearly, prior to 1657. The Lot formerly: owned by John Whitlock wassold to a committee appointed to build the Episcopal Church, andSt.Peter's Episcopal Cliurch was erected thereon.

A look at the history of St.Peter's Church in Salem, Massachusetts may give us a clue to whenJohn left Salem.

Our thanks to Norris Whitlock for this passing on this information. It is always terrific to beable to review the material that past researchers used to make assumptions.
