We began in the summer of 1980, when community leader Jon Lundin, (then RVC’s Director of Continuing Education), established Whiz Kids College. While originally conceived as a summer “college” for students with high academic abilities, Rock Valley College Whiz Kids quickly widened its programming to include any youth with a zest for learning.

Rock Valley College Whiz Kids classes are designed to:

Construct a large form using a variety of recycled materials and covering it with paper Mache. We will paint and decorate to finish. It could be an animal, a monster, or an abstract sculpture. Make an Impression(Ages 7-10) Utilize a variety of media to explore the group of Impression-ist Artists that include Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and George Seurat, to name a few. Their style of art considers the impact of light as it creates an explosion of color and movement, and will serve to inspire the creative process. Recycled Vases for the Masses(Ages 8-12) Take every day objects like plastic jars, containers, and plastic water bottles and turn them in to something beautiful! Work with local artist Norm Knott to repurpose recycled bottles, then antique and collage the outside of your container with a variety of materials. Paint and decorate until your finished vase emerges.. All supplies included.

Thai Spirit Houses of the Rich and Famous(Ages 7-11) In Thailand, many homes and businesses use “spirit houses” to keep mischievous spirits at bay. Get creative using found objects with local artist Norm Knott to make a sculpture like the ‘spirit houses” Thai folk artists have made for centuries. We’ll have gadgets, jewelry and other cool pieces for you to create your own house of art!

Weaving with Yarn and Paper(Grades 3- and older) Kids will make decorative weavings on looms they make themselves. They will use yarn and found objects for the warp and weft strings. Students will also learn weaving techniques using construction paper, newspaper and attached glittery sparkles. Come to class to express your creativity and personality.

Drawing with the Unusual, the Strange and Found Things(Grades 3-Up) Students will use their creative instincts to make unusual pictures and 3d art pieces. We will explore the RVC campus in order to find things to glue, stack, reshape, and reuse. The found objects will be primary but we’ll use traditional art materials too. Please bring scissors, pencil, and glue to class. Other materials will be provided. The finished pieces should be very creative, and the process along the way a good time.

Art Antics for Preschoolers(Preschool with adult) We will explore art materials and ideas on a child’s level. We’ll use crayons, markers, real clay, paint, etc to make marks on paper. We’ll hike the college campus to find things to glue on cardboard. We’ll arrange things in pattern order to make necklaces. We’ll try lots of things as time and tiredness allows.

Clayworks(Grades K-2) We will work with hand building clay, slabs, pinch forms and coils to make sculpture and useful objects. Some of the projects include faces, turtles, mugs and dishes, all to be made with the students’ personal style and input. Individuality is stressed. No two pieces are alike. Fun for all!

Fun with Clay(Grades 5-8) If you’ve never played with clay, this is your chance to learn and have some fun doing it! In this beginning ceramics class, you will learn the basic hand-building techniques used to create unique art with clay. All work will be fired and picked up when complete.

Handbuilding with Clay(Grades 2-5) This is a fun for youngsters who like creativity with messy material. The teacher will give basic step by step instructions for clay building. Students will add their personal touches to make each piece very original. The handbuilding techniques of pinching, coiling and using slabs will be taught. Students will make small sculptures and utility objects. Color will be applied as well as clear glaze, then the pieces will be fired in a kiln. Kids will be able to pick up the finished pieces within a week of the class ending.

Southwest American Clay Pottery(Grades 4-8) This is a hands on course exploring pots made by our First Nation’s Peoples of our Southwest. Resources will be literature illustrat-ing this pottery. The students will make their own pieces using the coil construction technique. They will decorate each pot using significant symbols of their own lives, just as the First Peoples Tribes also used symbols important to their existence. Students can pick up their art pieces a week after class is over.

Clay Sculpture(Grades 2-8) Make clay animals of your choice! Make anything that’s not useful. Make a toy, tell a story, just not a plate, mug vase or a bowl. Have some fun with clay. Learn how to keep clay pieces from breaking before they even get the firing kiln. We will paint and glaze your art work, put it in the kiln and fire them. Kids will get them back in a week.

Can You Dig It(Ages 6-11) Archaeology and Paleontology seem like big words to kids. Now Sciensational Workshops for Kids makes them come alive. Each child will partake in a simulated fossil excavation, uncovering the different bones of a dinosaur. Each child will then assemble the bones to form a completed 3-dimensional dinosaur to be taken home. We will bring the excavation tools, labels and specimen bags. We will use our geological time and fossil charts. You will make a plaster fossil replica of an ammonite, Tyrannosaurus rex tooth or choose from other molds. WHIZ KIDS FACULTYAIELLO, RONG is a native Chinese. She had a bachelor’s degree from a renowned university in China with a major in English Language and Literature. She taught English as a second language in a college in China for six years. She came to the U.S. in 2003, and has been teaching Chinese since. She has taught Chinese at Ray Chinese School and Language Stars Schools in Naperville, IL, and is now a middle and high school Chinese teacher at Rockford Christian Schools, Rockford, IL.

ELITE DEFENSE SYSTEMS (EDS) was founded by Matthew J. Numrich. Mr. Numrich is certified as one of only a handful of full Instructor of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) and the Filipino Martial Arts by Sifu Paul Vunak (under Guru Dan Inosanto). The Elite Defense environment is for learning and workout, where you are proud to bring your family, friends, co-workers, customers, clients, and acquaintances. Through its many services, EDS has specialty instructors for different groups of students, including law enforcement organizations, security companies, young adults, children with learning disabilities (ADD/ADHD), and family members seeking proactive home/environment safety.

FATHEAD FILMS began with two cousins captured by the magic and passion of movies. Keith and Justin Romine began writing and producing films as teenagers and now collaborate talent, creativity, and passion into Fathead Films. Both hold BA degrees in Film from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where they studied under some great names in film and television including, Academy Award nominated actor Tony Curtis, writer Sean Clark, and film director David Schmoeller. They currently produce short films and a feature film.

FILZ, RUTH has been teaching her love of Science for more than 30 years. She knows that children learn best by doing and puts the philosophy into practice. Sharing the attitude of “science is great,” she encourages kids to investigate their world, while ultimately encouraging them to pursue science related careers.

HA’S TAE KWON DO, KUM DO, AND YANG SENG STUDIO helps students gain wisdom and health through individualized martial arts classes. Master Ha is highly recognized for his continued contributions in the martial arts and carries a strong set of credentials (including T.K.D. Children Personality Development Association founder, U.S. National Collegiate Taekwondo Team Head Coach (2009), and Commissioner of USA Taekwondo Martial Arts Commission). He was a professor in the Korea Third Military Academy as well as an Education Training Officer in the Korea Armed forces Athletic Corps and Director of the World Taekwondo Research Society. He has been recently awarded with the U.S.A. Presidential Physical fitness Award for his outstanding contribution to and achievement in the world of USA Tae kwon do (2009). The TCS program is geared specifically for students that have greater trouble controlling their focus and strength.

HILLISTAD, JENNIFER has been teaching her popular art classes at RVC, since 1996. Her fun-filled classes allow students to explore their imaginations and discover how much fun it is to create art. Working in the Information Technology field for Pecatonica School district.

KOEHLER FAMILY knows Legos. Jane began her career with us in 1998, and recently came out of retirement to teach alongside her husband (Joel), sons (Jake and Luke) and daughter (Kassy). She has taught school for over 20 years. Joel has taught Lego classes for 15+ years, and is known to turn students into “inventors” as they explore and build simple and real life machines. Jake started as a Whiz Kids student, quickly grew into the role of assisting his Dad, and then took over the classes for several years. This year, Kassy and Luke lead the Lego classes – and take on the challenge to show the kids (and their family) a thing or two about engineering! A true Lego family right here in Rockford!

LANGSHOLT, INGER is a well-respected private instruction piano teacher, instrumental in developing community piano lessons in a group setting at Rock Valley College. Inger’s teaching style and classes are best described by one of her adult students: “She taught me (to play the piano) as a child. This is an easy, laid-back approach for the beginner. The student enjoys it!”

LYON, KATHY has been teaching for Community Education since 1985. Kathy earned her Master of Fine Arts degree and is nearing completion of her Masters in Teaching. Since 1991 she has been a teacher within the Rockford Public Schools.

MENKEN, JOHN is a degreed English teacher (B.S. Indiana State University). He has taught high school English, has designed and taught English courses for home school students, has been a technical writer and editor, and is a published author.

MOE, KATHY has been teaching with Wilton Decorating classes for 22 years, teaching everything from cookie bouquets to advanced cake decoration. The newest classes have been fondant and advanced gum paste flowers.

NO JOKE MARTIAL ARTS is the alternative to traditional gyms and martial arts schools. Training is offered to all levels–from the fitness novice to the professional fighter.

PODESZWA, RANDY has coached chess clubs at several schools and has tutored individual students in grades K-8 for many years.

RITTMEYER, COLLEEN knows Whiz Kids. As a child, she participated in the classes and eventually became her Mom’s (Elizabeth Strey) assistant. Following in mom Elizabeth’s footsteps, she now leads their own classroom. Colleen has been teaching at the International Montessori Academy in DeKalb, and brings exploration to a new level with Safaris and Origami.

ROCKFORD ART MUSEUM, a Partner in Excellence of the Illinois Art Museum enriches the quality of life in the Rockford region through visual arts programs of collection, exhibition and education. Located inside Riverfront Museum Park for the Arts and Sciences (a Rockford Park District facility), RAM offers 17,000 square feet of exhibition space within it’s three galleries. ROCKFORD DANCE COMPANY, in the Riverfront Museum Park, is a premier professional ballet company and resident of the Coronado Theater. The school division conducts classes in ballet, modern, jazz, tap and hip hop for preschoolers to adults, as well as offers community-based performance opportunities and education through their Dance Reach and Outreach programs.

SCIENSATIONAL WORKSHOPS, this New Jersey based, science enrichment program for kids has been around for 30 years, providing quality programs and teachers in 19 states.

SEVERSON DELLS is a not-for-profit nature education center located four miles southwest of Rockford. With 369 acres of mixed woodlands, prairie, wetlands, and old field habitat, Severson Dells is an ideal setting for nature study and appreciation. The Severson Dells Nature Center is housed in a converted Deer Lodge, and the Education Center includes a library, bookstore and classroom.

SHRADER, KIM has been teaching Whiz Kids classes in Pecatonica since 1997. She has a Master’s Degree in Spanish Language and Literature. Incorporating songs, games and fun, she spreads her love of learning in other areas such as: photography, cooking, crafts, calligraphy, scrapbooking, outdoor activities and exploration as well as imaginative play.

STREY, ELIZABETH has been a Whiz Kids instructor since 1988. Her classes are designed to help children develop background information for topics that interest them, while having fun at the same time! Elizabeth teaches second grade in the Rockford Public Schools.

STREY, KRISTEN knows Whiz Kids. As a child, she participated in the classes and eventually became her Mom’s (Elizabeth Strey) assistant. Following in mom Elizabeth’s footsteps, she now leads her own classroom–bringing game show atmosphere to the educational setting. After many years of scholastic competitions, Kristin founded her own business in 2007, Apex Questions, where she creates, formats and edits questions in a variety of scholastically approved formats. Kristin holds a B.A. in English and is an assistant Scholastic Bowl coach at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy.

TASTY TIDBITS PERSONAL CHEF SERVICE, CHEF DIANA KRAMER is a lifelong Rockford resident and has been working as a Personal Chef for almost four years after founding her business, Tasty Tidbits Personal Chef Service. Chef Diana left a successful Women’s Health Nursing career to focus on her lifelong passion... to bring families and friends back to the table for dinner and conversation around food that is lovingly prepared. For Chef Diana, food is her “love language” and she shows it by teaching, feeding and enjoying the many ways food can bring people together. Tasty Tidbits was born because fresh & healthy food is the best for you, but it has to taste good or it will not change eating habits of people whose diets require those changes. For Chef Diana, flavor, freshness and fun are the main focus. Chef Diana is a Culinary Business Academy graduate, Premier Member of the United States Personal Chef Association, is ServSafe Certified and is a Registered Nurse who has extensively researched and obtained educational credits in food, nutrition & safety.

TILFORD, JENNIFER has been teaching Whiz Kids classes for approxi-mately 23 years. She has been a teacher in the Rockford Public Schools for 25 years. Mrs. Tilford is a graduate of Rock Valley College and Rockford College. She earned her Master’s Degree from National Louis University.
