Haddon Hall One of the seats of the Duke of Rutland. Medieval manor house dates from 11th century with later additions between 13th and 17th centuries. Historically, home to the Vernon family (from 13th century) and later Manners family. In 1703, John Manners, was made 1st Duke of Rutland and moved to Belvoir Castle (Leicestershire) and so wardens were employed to look after Haddon Hall in the family’s absence. Moving on from the 1851 census, this 1861 census return still shows the Bath family acting as ‘wardens’ of Haddon Hall (but Mary Ann Bath as head of the house with her husband Travis having died earlier in 1861). It also reveals the railway ‘navvies’ living on and around the Haddon Hall estate (including in the ‘dovecote’ and in various barns and huts) who were responsible for building the Haddon railway tunnel (constructed 1861-1862) to ensure that the Midland Railway line (connecting Manchester and London) passed by the Duke of Rutland’s seat unseen.

Grimshawe’s granddaughter Mrs Mary Gosselin was the last family member to live at the hall until her death in 1930. The hall briefly became a youth hostel until the land was purchased by Stockport Corporation who demolished the building in the construction of Fernilee Reservoir in 1934. Today, only ruins of the hall remain as well as the Grimshawes’ private family cemetery nearby and a Catholic shrine erected in memory of the family’s Spanish governess Miss Dolores de Ybarguen.
