regularly giving speeches,
gaining feedback, leading
teams and guiding others to
achieve their goals in a
supportive atmosphere, leaders
emerge from the Toastmasters

journey begins with a single
speech. During their journey,
they learn to tell their stories.
They listen and answer. They
plan and lead. They give
feedback—and accept it.
Through our community of
learners, they find their path to
leadership.

Editor’s Message
It is my utmost privilege and great
pleasure to write an editor’s note for
my home club, Trichy Toastmasters
Club. Reminiscing upon my
rendezvous with Toastmasters, my
mind overflows with memories of my
first visit to the club. The atmosphere
was warm and welcoming and the
camaraderie infectious.
I am reminded of my very first table
Topic when I blanked out and stood
shivering on the dais. It was the
other toastmasters of my club who
encouraged me to continue with my
speech. An unnerving and yet a
memorable experience!
From that day onwards to date,
every meeting has enriched my
personality and empowered me with
great leadership skills. After all,
that's what toastmasters is all about,
to help polish one’s communication
skills and become a successful
leader.
We are delighted to present you this
journal with the key theme: “Power
of the Word”.
Words are singularly the most
powerful force available to
humanity. We can choose to use this
force constructively with words of
encouragement, or destructively
using words of despair. Words have
energy and power with the ability to
help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to
harm, to humiliate and to humble.
As Patrick Rothfuss said, “Words are
pale shadows of forgotten names. As
names have power, words have
power. Words can light fires in the
minds of men. Words can bring tears
from the hardest hearts.”
I wish to conclude my message by
saying a "Big Thank You" to
everyone who has been a guiding
light, trusted my abilities and
provided those "golden" chances to
prove my mettle. I wish to make
special mention of TM Sasi, TM
Nirmala Sasi, TM Mythily and TM
Thilak for their help and contribution
in creating this newsletter.

President’s Message
“The purpose of life is to live it, to
taste experience to the utmost, to
reach out eagerly and without fear
for newer and richer experience,”
Sometimes we are so busy chasing
one dream that we don’t even notice
an even better one, until someone
actually pushes it down to you.
For a long time now, I have been
thinking about why I decided to start
Toastmasters in Trichy; Why did my
daughter broach the topic of starting
one here; Why did I go to Mala first;
why?... the stroke of destiny or
Karma? Call it whatever, but the
stone had started to roll...
Today, I am extremely happy that I
followed my instinct.
Close your eyes and think of the first
word that comes to your mind when
you hear “Public Speaking” ... If you
feel terrified, nervous,
uncomfortable, sweaty palms...
don’t worry they are all accurate
reactions!!
Statistics say, 10% of the population
love public speaking; 10% are
terrified; and the rest 80% are not
sold out on that idea. I for one belong
to the first 10%. I have always
nurtured my passion to WRITE, and
my dream is to write on any topic
and write well! Toastmasters gave
me the platform to further this
passion of mine. Someone very aptly
said, “It is the safest place to fail”
and I totally agree with this. If you
get an environment like this to
improve your communication and
leadership skills, and also nurture
your passion, who would not want it?
Toastmasters has benefited me in
many aspects. A biggest stress
buster, it boosted my self-
confidence, self- esteem, and
assertiveness, that has made me a
better leader and above all an
empathetic person.
Today our success is directly
correlated with our ability to
communicate effectively and I have
gained enormously from this
organization.

Area Director’s Message
Dear Toastmaster Friends,
It's wonderful to return to this
newsletter.
What would I do if I did not have
words?
As I stop to assimilate my thoughts into
words, I recall 3 powerful words that
can move mountains.
PLEASE
THANK YOU
SORRY
As a child I remember these 3
words being drilled into me at home
and at school.... till it was second
nature.
Later on, I grew to understand
that these words could resolve
complex situations.
How do I link words to my
communication? The perspective is
always represented through words
and this is an integral part of the
Toastmasters program.
The best ideas if not
communicated through words will
remain abstract ideas. The best ideas
if only communicated through body
language would be relegated to
DUMB CHARADES.

The power of words tugs at your
heart strings.... words are powerful
missives...words with gentle
connotations are as powerful if not
more and can soothe a savage beast.
The art of story- telling was
popular from the ancient times. Story
telling was an oral tradition that led to
the creation of great epics in the world.
The tool used in the past was the
humble word.
Words are an effective vehicle
to reach the various age groups.... from
one generation to another.... word of
mouth...parables, fairy tales, myths,
folk tales and religious teaching came
through words in different forms.....on a
higher plane it led to the metaphorical
and the metaphysical connection. Thus,
the value of words remains paramount.
Realizing the value of words, the
Toastmasters International ...included
the importance of having the Word of
the day ....as a feature for each club
meeting.
If we could all remember how
important words are in our lives, we will
make the effort to use positive words...
healing words... words of
wisdom...words of encouragement and
make the world a better place.
May we use words with love and
compassion and cast sunbeams in our
Toastmaster Community.

Message from DTM Lalitha Giridhar
Dear Toastmasters,
Contesting and competing with fellow toastmasters half my age, and
laughing about it has been the highlight of being a toastmaster.
The best role that I have taken up till date in my toastmasters journey,
is my role as the Sergeant@Arms.
Week after week, it was fun preparing new ways to introduce the
President, it was energizing to open the meeting, and I learnt about time
management by being on time and getting the house in order for a good
meeting.
This has helped me immensely in my profession. I am always
prepared; I do my homework, and keep my house in order for any business
meetings. Toastmasters gives you so many takeaways that can be practically
applied in one's professional life.
As an HR professional, I am able to objectively state the facts without
hurting any sentiments or sugar coating. I attribute this skill to the number of
evaluations I have done in the club.

evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world
will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read
the book.”

Congratulations! TM Mala

The best part of my
toastmaster’s career has been my
role as the secretary of The Trichy
Toastmasters Club. It has marked a
milestone in my leadership journey.
In academics, we have both Theory
and Practicals. In toastmasters, my
role as the secretary has been the
Practicals. This is where I got to fully
apply all the communication and
leadership skills that I gleaned
during the previous years.
Toastmasters is much more than
Public Speaking.
It’s a forum of friends and
mentors who are always right there
when you need them. It’s all about
networking and management – skills
that are critical for success in any
career. It’s opportunity and
motivation. On the whole, it has been
a great learning experience that I’m
privileged to be a part of..

An astonishing and unusual
name: Toastmasters! One of the most
important decisions I’ve made on the
road to success is to be a part of this
visionary club.
Besides improving Public
Speaking and Leadership skills, the
club also helps in improving our
thinking skills that is the foundation
for all other skills.
Moreover, this club where
I’ve fit in myself has a strong bench.

I am extremely happy and
thankful to be a part of this elite
group. Toastmasters has given me an
opportunity to hone my public
speaking skills in a very relaxed and
supportive environment.
In addition to delivering
speeches, it has also helped me to
develop my own listening and
interpersonal skills through
evaluating other members’
speeches.
Overall for me, it has been a
phenomenal learning experience.

Being a toastmaster is an
enriching pursuit, the destination of
this journey being becoming a DTM
at one level and growing and
developing as an individual at other
levels.
Every aspect of being a
toastmaster is so full of opportunities
to learn. I realized that it is not only
about speaking and finishing one’s
levels but also listening and
appreciating.
This pursuit as a Toastmaster
has now become a passion and I
enjoy every moment of this journey.

In a brief period of one year
and four months, the learning and the
skills I have acquired are enormous.
Before Toastmasters I had always
been a mere spectator, never
entering the court, never playing the
game. Toastmasters is the platform
where I can put myself into trial
repeatedly, and gain confidence
each time. Participating in contests
has been an intense learning
experience of looking within and
working to improve. The
Toastmasters Conferences are
another experience altogether.
These are the opportunities to meet
world champions, great speakers and
leaders from different walks of life.
For the first time, I find myself
enjoying speaking in front of an
audience.
Looking forward to Luminance
with excitement

What more could a budding
toast master aspire for?
It was a magical beginning
indeed!
Yes, I had the unique privilege
of presenting my CC1 in the
presence of the International
President DTM Balraj Arunasalam
and PQD DTM Suganthi Periasami.
Being surrounded by dreamers,
doers, believers and thinkers is
euphoric. Toast Masters has initiated
a clarity in my thoughts, though I have
to explore further and am hoping that

Hi friends,
I am from Berhampur, Odisha. My father is a goldsmith and my mother
a homemaker. I have four sisters. I joined Trichy Toastmasters in June 2015.
After schooling in my hometown, I completed my Chartered
Accountancy as well as Company Secretary course.
Toastmastering has taught me several things about life. It has taught
me manners, etiquette, ability to resolve conflicts amicably, and other
leadership skills. I have been inspired by fellow toastmasters who are
successful entrepreneurs and yet very unassuming. One of the most
important lessons that I have learnt in toastmasters is the art of time
management. On the whole, it has given me amazing exposure in all the
varied aspects of life. I look forward to learning much more and evolving into
a well-honed personality and eventually give back to society in my own way.
I am immensely grateful to Trichy Toastmasters.
