who would be the audience for your media product?
TRANSCRIPT
The age for my target audience is quite broad due to my magazine not having a specific age range. Other magazines are easier and do have a specific age range
when it comes to magazines such as Top of the Pops, as this would be young girls aged 10-15. However, I have decided that the age for my indie rock magazine
would be both females and males aged between 16-25. I have chosen this age range due to the fact my target audience needs to be someone who has an
active lifestyle and can afford to go out and go to festivals and concerts. I feel that my magazine can also apply for people aged 25+ as it could be bought then
read by someone else within that household, but also if an older aged person reads the magazine I don’t think they would be fully engaged as there are offers within the magazine which enabled you to have a chance to win free tickets to see a well known artist/band live in concert. The free offers like this I feel will engage the younger generation as they have a more active life and are more
willing to go to concerts and festivals. Also, the type of artists and bands in my magazine will most likely attract the younger generation as well, artists such as Lana Del Ray and bands such as Mumford and Sons may not be familiar to the older generation, which would lead to them not being interested and engaged
within my indie rock magazine.
Age...
Gender...
The gender for my indie rock magazine is aimed at both males and females equally as the indie rock genre is diverse and open
to anyone that is interested. This is because the music genre attracts both genders due to in not being too girly or too manly. Other music magazine such as Top of the Pops would definitely
attract females as the pink colour choice on the front covers connote femininity, whereas, music magazines such as Kerrang! consist of a lot of blacks and dull colours which will attract the
male audience. however, my music magazine neither consists of girly, pink colours or dull colours that make it look like a rock
magazine. Therefore, I avoided these specific colour schemes as it would stereotypically interest a specific gender. According to the NRS readership survey it states that Q magazine’s audience is more male than female. However, I will proceed to keep my
music magazine gender neutral.
Interests...
My target audience will have a lot of interests so it would be easier to engage them with different sell lines, short snippets of information and free offers/competitions... etc. For instance, is someone is very interested in going
to concerts then a chance to win free tickets to see a well known artist in concert would intrigue my target
audience. My target audience would also be interested in following their favourite bands or/and artists on
twitter or other social networking websites, this would allow them to become more interested in the artist or
band they like.
Ethnicity...
My music magazine is not aimed at a specific ethnicity, for instance, white caucasian. Although, very little percentage of the indie rock artists are
non-white I still don’t feel that my indie rock music magazine should be aimed at a certain ethnicity.
However, other music magazines can attract a target audience with a specific ethnicity, for
example, hip hop and RAB are more aimed at a non-white target audience.
Lifestyle...The lifestyle of my target audience I would want to be very eventful with a lot going on but also have spare time to sit and actually read the magazine.
I need them to go to a lot of concerts, gigs or festivals to help them be engaged within the magazines sell lines and offers. Also, someone who has
a very active lifestyle consisting of various activities that could range in sport or dance, not someone who’s lifestyle is very laid back and careless, someone that has a lot of spare time but does not do much or anything at
all with it. Someone who doesn’t have a very active lifestyle will unfortunately, find it hard to be engaged within the magazine as someone
who doesn’t listen to a lot of music will result in them finding it hard to apply attention to specific sections in the magazine that talk about celebrities and well knows artists/bands. My target audience is also
someone that is a student, whether they are at university or are still in school, they’re also very sociable. If they use social networking sites such as
twitter would also be very beneficial as they can follow their favourite bands or artists.
Socio-economic group...
The socio-economic group of my target audience in the indie rock genre are middle class people. I decided
middle class because they are not too wealthy but can afford these luxuries. They can afford to go to gigs,
concerts or/and festivals and can afford to go to university. Overall, just normal people that don’t
particularly need these luxuries but out of their interest will buy them. Someone that is wealthy enough to see
an advertisement or competition offer for concert tickets or festivals tickets and will proceed to try and win
them because they can.
