#WhoKnew – Social Enterprise Day 2019 Marketing Pack Background In 2016, Social Enterprise UK launched the #WhoKnew campaign to celebrate Social Enterprise Day. #WhoKnew is a digital campaign designed to give social enterprises the chance to tell their stories, to show what makes them different from traditional businesses and to shout about the impact of their work. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of how organisations work as a social enterprise, using #WhoKnew to highlight something special about the business and address the issue that in many cases the public may not be aware that a business they buy from is a social enterprise. In 2018, with the support of organisations around the world, over 400 organisations across 27 countries took part sharing pictures of service users and staff holding up signs to promote their business across social media. The campaign had a Twitter reach of 5.9 million and was trending in the UK. Social Enterprises around the world used the day to take their message out to a wider audience, whether it is to consumers, businesses, councils or the local community. They talked about their impact, both as an organisation, as individual staff members, about what makes them different - their workforce, structure and leaders, or what they do with their profits. This year Social Enterprise Day falls on Thursday 21st November. We’re going to be running the campaign again to support more social enterprises to take part and to reach out to a bigger global audience. This marketing pack is designed to make it easier for you to share content about the campaign and to take part. This pack contains sample social media content, web and newsletter copy. If you’ve any questions about the campaign, please see the FAQ section at the end of this document, or contact [email protected].

Background

In 2016, Social Enterprise UK launched the

#WhoKnew campaign to celebrate Social Enterprise

Day. #WhoKnew is a digital campaign designed to

give social enterprises the chance to tell their

stories, to show what makes them different from

traditional businesses and to shout about the

impact of their work.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of

how organisations work as a social enterprise, using

#WhoKnew to highlight something special about

the business and address the issue that in many

cases the public may not be aware that a business

they buy from is a social enterprise.

In 2018, with the support of organisations around

the world, over 400 organisations across 27

countries took part sharing pictures of service users

and staff holding up signs to promote their business

across social media. The campaign had a Twitter reach of 5.9 million and was trending in the UK.

Social Enterprises around the world used the day to take their message out to a wider audience,

whether it is to consumers, businesses, councils or the local community. They talked about their

impact, both as an organisation, as individual staff members, about what makes them different -

their workforce, structure and leaders, or what they do with their profits.

This year Social Enterprise Day falls on Thursday 21st November. We’re going to be running the

campaign again to support more social enterprises to take part and to reach out to a bigger global

audience.

This marketing pack is designed to make it easier for you to share content about the campaign and

to take part.

This pack contains sample social media content, web and newsletter copy. If you’ve any questions

about the campaign, please see the FAQ section at the end of this document, or contact

[email protected].

To help raise awareness and get more people involved you can share the following text with your

network by email or on your website.

Thursday 21st November is Social Enterprise Day – part of Global Entrepreneurship Week,

and a day to raise the profile of social enterprise around the world. To mark the event, we’re

partnering with Social Enterprise UK who are running the #WhoKnew campaign – a digital

campaign that’s easy to take part in and set up to allow social enterprises to shout out loud

and proud about the impact they’re having in their communities and what makes them an

organisation that is doing business differently. All that’s required to take part is to download

an editable poster, fill it out and share the picture on social media.

The campaign is designed to allow social enterprises from across different sectors to raise

their voices and share some of the inspiring things they’re doing with a global audience using

#WhoKnew to raise awareness of their work.

Often members of the public don’t realise that the goods and services they’re buying are

being provided by a social enterprise, but this is a chance to let them know. Whatever your

business and social mission is, join the worldwide social enterprise community and get

involved!

Facebook Copy

In addition to posting your photos online for the campaign, you can encourage others to get

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I get involved?

#WhoKnew is a great way to celebrate Social Enterprise Day and spread the word around the world

about the good that social enterprises are carrying out.

I’m not a social enterprise. Can I still take part?

You don’t need to be a social enterprise to take part in the campaign. If you work to support social

enterprises through bringing them into your supply chains, social investment or training you can also

get involved and use the campaign to raise the profile of your work.

More information can be found on the Social Enterprise UK website -

https://www.socialenterprise.org.uk/socialenterpriseday/

Is activity only happening on Thursday 21st November?

There will be a range of online activity happening in November, but the aim is to build momentum

towards Thursday 21st November, in order to get #WhoKnew trending on Twitter!

What logos need to be on the frame?

The strength of #WhoKnew is its ability to unite a global social enterprise community in a simple

online action showing the strength and scale of the social enterprise movement and as such we want

all organisations taking part to have a sense of ownership over the campaign. However, since the

campaign was started by Social Enterprise UK we please request that you keep our logo on the

#WhoKnew poster. Of course, please do add your own logo to the poster as well and feel free to add

your country flag!

Do I have to use English to take part in the campaign?

We will be tracking the hashtag #SocialEnterpriseDay to monitor the reach of the campaign so

please do use this when you are sharing. However, this is a global campaign and therefore the text

you use on your sign and in your tweet can be in the language of your country and feel free to

translate ‘Who Knew’ into your own language.
