Field of Miracles

Love,

OnE OF My grEAtESt JOyS since writing my last Let-ter from the Editor was interviewing visionary artist and teacher Shiloh Sophia whose artwork is featured on the

cover of this issue and whose poem appears on page 23. She began our radio interview by performing a virtual “red

thread” ritual for our listeners. She explained that many spiritual traditions honor the idea that those who are destined to meet are connected by a red thread. So, for example, all those tuned into the interview at that time were connected by an invisible red thread of destiny. She invited us to imagine holding a red ball of thread and tossing it to the next person while keeping a piece for ourselves. She said that while we were responsible for seeing the whole picture, we were only responsible for the piece we were holding.

This was clearly an analogy for life and all the ways we often try to take responsibility for someone else’s “piece of thread,” or expect them to be responsible for ours, and how often we forget just how connected we are to each other. It was a beautiful way to open the program and I appreciated her creative use of a ritual in an unlikely setting. Little did I know that would be only the first display of her vast creative power during our time together.

She spoke at length about her passion for painting, writing, teaching, dancing spending time in nature…the list went on and on. And she spoke in quotes. Not other people’s words, but her own.

Almost everything she said came out sounding like it should be quoted. I always gauge the quality of an inter-view by how many notes I take based on what my guest says that inspires me. I filled up two pages listening to her! I couldn’t write fast enough.

My very favorite thing she said was this. “Everything I do is an outpouring of my inquiry into the Divine. So, I ask, ‘How can I spend time creating a field of miracles in which ideas come to me that wouldn’t come otherwise?’”

Ahh, how beautiful is that? Her words reflected my heart. I, too, am an avid seeker, and I too am drawn to spending time in the “field of miracles” where ideas come that wouldn’t come otherwise. I sometimes find myself in the ʽfieldʼ during meditation, or a walk in the woods, and sometimes I find myself there when I’m hosting a radio show.

Whole Living Journal is like a red thread that connects our com-munity of like-minded readers. As you peruse this issue, my hope is that you’ll sense a connection to others, to yourself, and to your destiny. And, of course, I hope you find yourself transported to that magical field where inspiration awaits.

CENTER FOR SpIRITuAl lIVING“There is a power in the Universe greater than you are and

you can use it!” Dr. Ernest Holmes used this powerful statement to open his weekly radio and TV programs in the mid 20th century. Center for Spiritual Living of greater Cincinnati (CSLgC) is a member of Centers for Spiritual Living, the denomination founded by Dr. Holmes. CSLGC is a wonderful, welcoming place where people are reminded that our thoughts create our reality, and that we are always using this great power. God/Spirit is always working for us by working through us. As our thoughts change, our lives change, and we know that if we don’t like our current experience, we can create different results by making different choices.

Founding Minister rev. Linda Ketchum says that she is on a spiritual journey rather than a religious one. She credits Dr. Michael Beckwith, a presenter in the movie The Secret, as being one of the people who inspired and encouraged her on her spiritual path. Rev. Eunice Chalfant, her minister and teacher in Dayton, Ohio, had been part of Dr. Beckwith’s center in California. Rev. Linda met Dr. Beckwith when he presented several events in Dayton.

In 2003, Rev. Linda founded Center for Spiritual Living, for-merly Beacon of Life. Rev. Linda and her spiritual community honor all paths to God/Spirit. Services are held every Sunday at 10:30am at 5701 Murray Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio. Childcare is avail-able for children under 7. www.cslgc.org. 513.218.2128.

WhEn it COMES to spiritual enlightenment, the world offers thousands of paths. They all lead to God. A Course in Miracles is one of those paths.

As its name implies, A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is just that—a course. Although it could be likened to any course a stu-dent undertakes, with a carefully outlined theoretical text and lessons that clarify the concepts, its aim is the exact opposite of what one usually expects when taking a course. Its aim is not one of learning but one of unlearning.

No author is listed for the book, but Helen Schucman wrote it with the help of William Thetford. ACIM is a self-study cur-riculum that aims to assist its readers in achieving spiritual trans-formation. It provides the means to help students change their mind and unlearn what it calls the ego or fear-based thought system so a new thought system, one based on spirit or love, can take its place. It emphasizes application rather than theory and experience rather than theology.

So just what that does that mean? It means one can study the 669 page text of the Course, as its students refer to it, until it can be recited verbatim, but all that will give you is the theory the Course is based on. It’s the application of the concepts of the Course, as presented through the lessons, which brings the experience of the change of mind it offers.

And a change of mind is what the Course says is needed if we are to know who we really are, which is Spirit. It’s a change of mind that will allow us to know God.

At the foundation of the Course’s teaching and the means it offers students to bring about this change of mind is forgive-ness. However, the form of forgiveness the Course teaches is opposite from our human perspective. It teaches forgiveness from a spirit perspective, meaning we recognize that as Spirit, which is perfect and incapable of wrong, no wrong was done. In essence we forgive for the nothing they have done.

ACIM was designed to be a self-study course. It advises there is only one teacher that is needed and that is the student’s own internal Teacher, referred to as the Holy Spirit. But as with any course, it can be helpful to have a teacher in form to answer questions regarding theory and practice.

There are many well-known teachers of the Course who have authored books that help students understand the con-cepts. One in particular is advanced ACIM teacher, Gary Re-nard. Although Renard has authored three books about ACIM, his first book, The Disappearance of the Universe, is consid-ered the most helpful, especially to new students. This book is lovingly referred to by ACIM students as “A Course in Miracles

for Dummies.”Because ACIM is

written in iambic pen-tameter, a form of verse associated with William Shakespeare, many stu-dents find it difficult to understand. But once students grasp the concepts, they often find the verse beautiful and easy to read.

ACIM is not for everyone. But for those called to this path it becomes a simple and gentle way to find their way home to heaven.

Note: Gary Renard will present a one day workshop at Gar-den Park Unity Church in Cincinnati on May 19, 2012. He will explain how practicing the revolutionary form of forgiveness taught in ACIM can help participants achieve total mastery over the experiences of their lives. Gary will also be discussing ma-terial from his third book, Love Has Forgotten No One. Cost is $95 pre-registration, $105 at the door. For more information or to register for the workshop contact Barbara Douthitt at [email protected] or call 513.245.1256. Or visit http://garyre-nard.NamasteEvents.org. (See ad on page 3.) Tara L. Robinson will interview Gary on April 24th, 3:30-4:30pm on WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.About the author: Susan Bartels was intro-duced to A Course in Miracles 10 years ago and committed to it as her spiritual path four years ago. She has studied with teachers Gary Renard and David Hoffmeister and currently facilitates an ACIM group at Garden Park Unity Church on Tuesday nights at 7pm. 513.324.4201. [email protected].

ALL truth iS knOWABLE. Seriously–anything that is or has ever been can be known: no ho-

cus pocus or intuitive guessing, but scien-tifically proven fact. Truth is accessible–about any person, situation, condition, project, teacher, business, medical treat-ment, politician, spiritual teaching, or anything at all.

What do you want to know? Is that person telling the truth? Is this a ben-eficial supplement for me to take? Given what I want in this situation, does it serve me to….be in or leave this relationship? Take that job? Make a move? Work with this teacher/doctor/friend/project?

For 25 years, it has been verified by millions of worldwide experiments that truth is quickly discernable. It has noth-ing to do with being psychic, or reading the Akashic Records, or any other form of divination. It is about the willingness and ability to tell truth from falsehood. Know-ing the difference could save us lifetimes of suffering, and fortunes in wasted time, money or shattered dreams.

How can we know if something is true or beneficial? First, be willing to know the truth and release all fears associated with it. If we accomplish that, and have integrity in our questioning, then a very simple process of muscle testing, called kinesiology, becomes a powerful tool for success. The basic idea is simple – if the muscle stays strong, the answer is “yes” or “true.” If the muscle goes weak, it is a “no” or “not true” answer.

Kinesiology has been in common us-age since the 70’s and numerous schools teach its application. Machaelle Wright

of Perelandra (www.perelandra-ltd.com) teaches various methods, specifically so anyone can improve their own health. In 1995, Dr. David Hawkins published Pow-er vs. Force, in which he teaches kinesiol-ogy and substantiates its scientific valid-ity. Most importantly, he discovered that it isn’t the body’s wisdom that answers, as previously thought, but the field of consciousness in which the body exists.

Dr. Hawkins is a world-renowned au-thor, psychiatrist, spiritual teacher, and enlightened being. His astonishing scale for understanding both human experience and spiritual enlightenment, The Map of Consciousness, uses kinesiology and was originally published in Power vs. Force. Both have been translated into 25 lan-guages and can be found at www.veritas-pub.com.

In Dr. Hawkins’ numerous publica-tions and worldwide lectures, he speaks beautifully about higher consciousness, truth, power, and how to heal from all afflictions. He offers kinesiology as the first opportunity for humanity to reliably tell the difference between what does and does not benefit well-being. To hear ar-chived radio shows focused on his spiri-tual research, The Map of Consciousness and kinesiology, visit http://louisadyer.com/books.html.

Learning kinesiology is easy, but do-ing it well requires practice and devotion to truth. More specifically, attachments to particular answers must be released, and questions must be posed correctly, in or-der to perceive truth instead of subcon-scious beliefs or feelings. Especially for those using pendulums instead of actual

muscle testing, staying focused on know-ing the truth while being free of attach-ments is vital. Sometimes, testing for an-other is easier than for oneself, since we often seek answers in situations where we have hidden preferences about outcomes.

Kinesiology does not require what we are asking about to be physically pres-ent, since it is the omnipresent field of consciousness that actually answers. The body’s muscle response (or the swing-ing of a pendulum when used in specific ways) is merely the tool that registers a response in that field. Everything that occurs–every word, thought, deed, feel-ing, action or reaction that has ever hap-pened–leaves an imprint in conscious-ness, throughout eternity. Muscle testing accesses that information in a simple yes/no format.

The field of consciousness has been described by prophets, sages, and spiri-tual teachers throughout human history and called various things. Those of us who read the Akashic Records, for ex-ample, know it as the Akashic Field, or in the Bible as the Book of Life or Book of Days, where every moment is recorded so it can be reviewed when we leave this life. Scientists might explain it with the Unified Field Theory, which states that everything in the universe continuously interacts with everything else. Quantum physics has proven there is a benevolent energy that is within and surrounds ev-erything that exists.

I personally call that God, and it is also the field of consciousness, through which all truth is knowable. (Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Rev. Louisa A. Dyer on March 6th, 3:30-4:30pm on WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.)About the author: Rev. Louisa A. Dyer, Meta-physical Minister with Masters in Holistic Psy-chology, has used kine-siology since 1980. She is a CoCreative Scientist, communicating with Nature Intelligence to facilitate health on every level of being, co-creator of WOW Processing (www.thewowprocess.com), and Akashic Records Reader. Rev. Louisa teaches truth as shared by enlightened be-ings, does Energy Clearings, and consults nationally by phone: 513-248-0069. Visit www.louisadyer.com or email [email protected]. FirSt thingS FirSt. We need to be able to breathe (preferably clean air). We need to eat, we need water, we need shelter. Okay. Then what? I need to be inspired,

every day: do I have a good enough reason to get up, get out, and show up?

Well, there are the bills that need to be paid: mortgage/rent, clothes for the kids, food on the table, gas for the car, etc. Ad infinitum. Is, then, my life just a chore? Or is there more? Are you getting what you want? Are you getting what you need?

I find these questions show up a lot for my clients. And for me. The questions set up a real challenge and the answers don’t always come easily. We have to be willing to show up and do our “work.” It is always worth it, but we don’t always know that at the beginning of the process. In fact, the beginning of the process is like any real beginning, it is uncomfortable. We don’t know what we don’t know. We can feel not sure where to go, we might be disoriented, not have our bearings, feel adrift, afraid even.

Are you getting what you need? Are you getting what you want? What processes are you in? What learning curves are you on? I am still making my way through the process of learning how to “market my services.” It has been and continues to be strained, sometimes awkward, and just hard for me. I still have work to do in that process, on that learning curve. And, am I willing to be uncomfortable?

No matter what our challenges are, we need to breathe, and we need to be inspired. I just viewed a video on You-

Tube about what it takes to succeed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NQREuc7JX8). It is based on an old story about a guru and a student. The speaker in the video, Eric Thomas, grew up on the streets of Detroit. He did not find his biological father until he was 30 years old. He exudes power, strength and love. He has found some of what he needs. He has found some of what he wants. He has dedicated his life to serving others.

He has a sense of clarity and purpose. We don’t all have that. Inside of us we all are yearning for just that. And, it requires that we find the strength from the inside to begin making some different choices. Sometimes we first have to find the support on the outside so that we can begin to feel safe enough to even admit we have to change if we are to survive, let alone succeed. It is always scary at first. When we are desperate enough, we find that we feel the fear, and we make a move anyway.

yOu CAn’t DrAW A MAp that leads to better health un-less you know where to start and what you will need along the way. The most logical place to start is at the very begin-

ning- your cells. No conversation about healthy cells is complete until you discuss free radicals. Without getting too technical, they are oxygen molecules that are missing an electron from the pair it should have so it grabs an electron from the next molecule it gets near. The trouble is, when a free radical seizes an electron from another molecule, the second molecule then becomes a free radical, because now itʼs the one missing an electron. One free radical starts a cascade of new free radicals in our body.

Although losing a few electrons might not sound like a big deal, it is. Free radicals can blast their way into our cells, thereby gaining access to our DNA. If they break up the DNA molecules in order to steal electrons the cell either dies, loses its ability to reproduce, or even worse, mutates and produces abnormal cancer cells.

Not surprisingly free radical cellular damage is a major con-tributor to many diseases. In fact, researchers and the medical com-munity generally agree that most common ailments (including vir-tually all chronic degenerative diseases and pathological conditions such as aging, stroke, Lou Gehring’s disease and cancer) are either directly caused by, or are closely associated with free radical dam-age.

Thankfully there are effective counter measures called antioxi-dants. Simply put, antioxidants are molecules that help the body keep its electrons and fight off the free radicals. They also help repair and restore damaged cells and tissues. As renowned physi-cian, professor, and author Ralph Golan states, “Determining what substances provide the most optimal antioxidant capabilities (and) making those nutrients available to the public must be first and fore-most in our quest for health and disease prevention.”

In other words, knowing your antioxidant level is as important as knowing your cholesterol level, or your blood pressure. The lat-est medical literature strongly suggests that maintenance of proper levels of antioxidants can decrease the risk of cancer, heart disease, and complications related to diabetes. It can also boost the immune system and speed recovery times from illness and injury, while de-creasing pain and inflammation.

Although the best way increase one’s antioxidant level is through good nutrition, most Americans do not eat 8-12 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. As a result it is important that a vitamin/mineral supplement is taken. Taking this simple step can provide optimal nutritional support and raise the overall antioxidant levels in the body. When it comes to nutritional supplementation, safety

and scientifically-backed recommendations are of the utmost im-portance.

However, the healing process can’t begin until the antioxidant level is known. There is a fascinating new device called an Anti-oxidant Scanner. On an episode of Dr. Oz’s TV show he discussed this cutting-edge machine which uses Nobel-Prize winning science to safely measure antioxidant levels in the body, providing an im-mediate reading of this critical health marker. The process is a quick scan of the hand’s subcutaneous skin tissue. That’s it. The scanner enables the doctor to provide a non-invasive, painless, accurate, and low cost assessment of the body’s nutritional status. Imagine, in just a few minutes with a non-invasive procedure you can have an ac-curate reading of your antioxidant levels.

That is why I am so excited to announce that the Antioxidant Scanning process is now one of the services that we offer at Mont-gomery Dental Medicine. This scanning process is a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to help our family, friends, and patients along the road to good health, longevity and vitality.

In an effort to increase awareness about this vital issue and in-troduce this new technology to our community we are hosting a “Scanning Event for Your Health” which includes a one hour pre-sentation and scan. By attending you will learn how to progress to a higher level of health, vitality and longevity using a process that is guaranteed to help you achieve your goals in a measurable and repeatable way. Also, if your antioxidant levels are too low, we can explain how to increase your defenses simply, effectively and measurably.

There will be two sessions on Wednesday, March 28th at 5pm and 6pm. If successful, this event will be repeated Wednesday, April 25th. Attendance is $20, half of which goes to the Feed the Chil-dren Fund. We are located on Montgomery Rd, just south of Ronald Reagan Hwy. Call us at 513.891.5860 or visit our website www.montgomerydentalmedicine.com for more information and a map.

“IMAgInE…thEn do It”

Julie Shifman of Cincinnati, Found-er of Act Three which focuses on help-ing women realize a compelling next stage of life, has invited three women from around the country to share their life stories to urge other women to get out of the dreaming and into the doing. Their message: let your imagination soar, but then make your dreams happen…we did it and so can you. “Imagine…then do it,” at the Mayerson JCC on April 18, gathers speakers to highlight the limitless opportunities that lie ahead with some imagination and determination.

Fawn germer, today one of the country’s most sought-af-ter speakers, saw her life and career change quickly when Oprah Winfrey raised her book Hard Won Wisdom to the skies, calling it a “very inspiring book.” To win the acclaim of Oprah and readers across the globe meant her perseverance had triumphed over earlier setbacks and hurdles. Germer brings that experience to audiences around the world and now to Cincinnati where she will be discussing topics like self-esteem, risk-taking, work-life balance, and perseverance during times of setback. She is also an award-winning investigative reporter, four-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, and the best selling author of seven books.

Jen groover, Philadelphia-based business and lifestyle content contributor for several major TV networks and maga-zines brings her business sense to budding entrepreneurs. Au-thor of What If? & Why Not?, Groover talks about rethinking the negative questions that often lead to failure even before get-ting started, and is on a mission to inspire other women to reach their greatest potential by transferring fears into action.

Indie Lee from New York was given a new chance at life in 2009 when she awoke from brain surgery to discover that a potentially fatal tumor had successfully been removed. Her return to normal life, however, did not mean settling back in old patterns, but instead she went on a mission to create a green and organic skin care line without the environmental toxins that might have been the cause of her illness.

With several poignant examples of women turning odds in their favor and uphill battles into positive, life-changing ven-tures, the attendees at “Imagine…then do it” are encouraged to exploit their own ideas and realize their dreams one step at a time.

“I’m very excited to offer another fun and exciting opportu-nity for local women of all ages and from all walks of life to get inspired. We have some amazing high-profile speakers and the momentum from the last Imagine event to build on. I know that most women go through a phase of questioning before latch-ing on to a new opportunity that will carry them into the next productive stage of life, but ‘Imagine’ will provide an impetus to get moving,” says Julie Shifman, organizer of the event. Shif-man will share her own story of reinventing. Her new book, Act Three – Create the Life You Want After Your First Career and Full Time Motherhood, will be released at the April 18 event. i AM Writing to those of us who are yearning for more compassion, more understanding and less conflict with-

in ourselves, our relationships and the world at large. My intention is to share something I feel grateful to have been exposed to that has offered me much hope in believing that peace is possible. That something is called NVC, or Non-violent Communication, which is now more preferably called Compassionate Communication. It is a way of being in a present state with ourselves and others

that encourages a flow of heart-centered giving and receiving.

Compassionate Communication is often described as being a conscious-ness centered on our innate compassion, with a complimenting set of founda-tional formulas to guide us in re-wiring our thinking machines to become more aligned with our hearts and our truth. In summing up the basic process, I would describe it as being honest about what is actually happening, instead of the analyses, evaluations, and stories we tell ourselves. It’s honoring our feelings, our responses to the experiences of our lives and listening to what our feelings want to mourn or celebrate. NVC calls these our values, or universal human needs, like security, consideration, self-expres-sion, and hope. Once we know what we are really wanting, if we are mourning a value not present, we can focus on how to experience this value in our lives by making clear requests of ourselves and others and by creating strategies.

Often we rush to solve a problem, at-tached to only one way to fix it, which obscures our awareness of the value we are hoping to experience. Why do we like it when our homes are neat? Because we like neatness, or because we value the ease and flow created when our environ-ments have more order? Do we also de-sire the convenience of accessibility of our resources achieved by an awareness of where we have put them and an hon-oring of them by keeping them safe?

I have scolded myself harshly when I have misplaced something. NVC has guided me toward giving myself an em-pathetic presence that encourages me to mourn my need for order and efficiency and accept myself for choosing to meet

another need, like rest and recuperation when I didn’t have the energy to put my keys in their special pocket. Once I em-pathize, I may request more self-accep-tance and patience of myself and create a strategy of acknowledging my limits to avoid overextending myself so much that I am more likely to forget to put my keys away.

I am aware that NVC is only one at-tempt being made to help resolve con-flict and encourage peace. My hope is for mutual appreciation, sharing, and collaboration among all those called to-wards peacemaking. I think the world would be dull without many flavors of insights, ideas, and inspirations that when integrated have the potential to ig-nite a flame capable of illuminating our collective purpose to create peace on our home planet.

Note: NVC events are listed in WLJ Event Calendar. More Information can be found at www.cnvc.org and www.nvcohio.org. Cincinnati NVC is on Fa-cebook.

ALthOugh Our rEgiOn’S pEAk growing season is still a few months in the future, early to mid-spring brings several in-season treats. The delicious fennel

bulb does best after hard freezes but before the heat of summer, and now is the perfect time for local onions and other plants in the Allium family—leeks, shallots, ramps, garlic, scallions and chives. Nutritionists consider all of these vegetables great sources of fiber, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals.

Onions are grown all over the world and, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), are the second most com-

monly cultivated vegetable worldwide after tomatoes. Accord-ing to the website www.vegetarian-nutrition.info, onions and onion extracts can relieve asthma, bronchitis, and cold symp-toms, and the WHO “supports the use of onions for the treat-ment of poor appetite and to prevent atherosclerosis.”

Onions, leeks and fennel form the basis of the following vegetarian recipe. It makes a good entrée for two people, per-haps served with rice or noodles; we enjoyed it recently as a side dish with pan-fried crabcakes.

TRy SoMe TuRMeRiC Turmeric is a bright yellow eastern spice that has

a warm and slightly bitter taste. Indigenous to India where it has been one of the primary ingredients in curry, its anti-inflammatory effects have made it a pow-erful herb in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. The most fragrant oil in turmeric is curcumin. Studies have shown health benefits in fighting inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, cancers, atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease.

Curcumin is available as a supplement, but we recommend that the whole turmeric spice be used. The spice has other components that may act synergistically with curcumin, or have other health benefits. And its powerful taste will liven up your vegetable dishes.

instructions:Warm olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until softened. Add remaining spices, pepper sauce, juice, shrimp and broccoli and sautée until broccoli is crisp-tender. Serve over brown rice.

WE ArE in A DiFFiCuLt trAnSitiOn right now from one age to the next. The forces of light and progress are making an unprecedented impact on

civilization while the tendencies toward fear and separation are making a last ditch stand against what is ultimately inevitable. Thus we see the great movement toward real spiritual progress breaking down outworn religious structures and bringing a new demand for honesty and justice in the political arena. At the same time those who cling to the old ways are doing whatever they can to advance their desires at the expense of the freedom of the rest of humanity.

That is the current state of affairs. So, why be optimistic today?

1We are about to witness the emergence into public life of a group of fully enlightened individuals whose only purpose is to serve human liberation. They will call to what is best in all of us, and we will build a truly new civilization. This is not some idealistic pipe dream, but an event planned since 1875 and is already unfolding before us. The Teachers are our elder brothers, those who have gone ahead of us on the spiritual path and thus know the terrain. They are what every one of us will

one day become: selfless embodiments of God’s will, love and light. They are here, now, gradually making their approach to our deeply skeptical, materialistic world. They will not be de-terred in their mission, which is nothing less than the restoration of the Plan of Light on Earth.

2The heart of humanity is sound, open and loving. We may see ourselves as not fully dedicated to the kinds of changes the world so desperately needs, but that is because no one has ever really presented the possibility of real change. The Teach-ers will do just this, and they have no doubt that the vast major-ity of humanity will say “yes” to a world in which all are free to enjoy the bounty of this planet, where all are free to truly love one another and build a society where no one has to do without the bare necessities of life. This is our future and we will create it.

3No one can imagine the power and love of creation it-self, but that power, which we might call the will of God, is now directed solely toward the re-creation of our global society. This unlimited force is at the disposal of all who seek to posi-tively transform our world. Of course we have free will and can always choose where to direct our energies, but as we give ourselves to the betterment of life for all people, the love and power of creation itself will express in us.

All this is true. How do I know it? Thirty years of experi-ence with the teachings and the Teachers. Do you know it too?

Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

MuShrOOMS hAvE A LOng hiStOry of being used as herbal medicine, dating back thousands of years. Modern research and current scientific studies

are confirming the healing power they have on the body. Both laboratory and human clinical studies conducted on fungi have shown that mushrooms have properties that can stimulate im-mune function and inhibit tumor growth.

Reishi mushrooms, for instance, contain multiple active ingredients including: polysaccharides and triterpenes. Poly-saccharides are complex carbohydrates made up of chains of sugars. These sugars stabilize blood pressure and blood sugar, and have an effect on free radicals. Triterpenes are steroid like molecules that inhibit histamine release and have anti-inflam-matory properties. The result is an herb which has immune sys-tem enhancing properties and possible cancer fighting effects.

In the East, the reishi mushroom is referred to as the “herb of spiritual potency.” In China, reishi is known as “ling zhi,” the mushroom of immortality. In Japan it is called “mannentake,” the 10,000 year mushroom. The Japanese government officially lists reishi mushrooms as a treatment for cancer.

Below are some of the most common medicinal mush-rooms:

agarikon is a mushroom hidden deep in the old growth for-ests of the Pacific Northwest and was heralded by the First Peo-ples of British Columbia for “its life shield properties.” Recent studies have shown that it has powerful immuno-active effects against airborne elements.

birch Polypore is said to have been used by the Ice Man when he traveled up into the Alps. This mushroom helped him defend against “the ravages of nature.” It is now used to fight parasites and to boost the immune system.

Cordyceps is an adaptogenic and longevity herb which has been used for thousands of years by the Tibetans for its ability to increase energy and passion. It has a powerful effect on the immune system and studies show it increases natural killer cell activity by over 200%.

maitake is known as the Dancing Mushroom. It is consid-ered by many to be the most powerful immuno-supporter in the mushroom kingdom. It also promotes normal cell growth, particularly in the breasts, lungs, and liver.

red reishi is touted as the Mushroom of Immortality. It is borne from Chinese Acacia trees and has been heralded by Asians for thousands of years for its ability to promote lon-gevity and well being. There are six different types of reishi mushrooms: red, purple, green, white, yellow, and black. The red mushroom is the most well-studied and is said to possess the most healing properties.

shiitake mushrooms are promoted to fight the development and progression of cancer and AIDS by boosting the body's im-mune system. These mushrooms are also said to help prevent heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels and to help treat infections such as hepatitis by producing interferon, a group of natural proteins that stops viruses from multiplying.

Staying Balanced and FlexibleIntuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

StAy BALAnCED AnD FLExiBLE” sounds like the mantra of a skilled gymnast who performs on the bal-ance beam. She makes it look effortless, but it took a lot

of work for her to get to that level of apparent ease. We know that she has practiced many long hours to achieve the grace and form with which she performs. But she also has confidence that her performance will be the best of which she is capable. After all the prep work, at the time of competition, she still must also maintain an inner peace and a trust in Spirit that she will do her best.

In our day-to-day life, we too, strive to maintain balance. Often, we are tested to the max by multiple stressors, such as rush hour traffic, car problems, children to pick up and drop off at several different places, food to buy and prepare, deadlines to meet – the list can go on and on. But if you think like the gymnast, handling all of these tasks with grace and ease is a skill to be learned and this can only be done through practice, trial and error, and more practice. If you’re not a multi-tasker, it might feel difficult, however, just start by concentrating on the areas that are the most comfortable for you to manage and find other ways for the remaining tasks to be handled…or dropped. Be flexible.

Knowing yourself better will help, too. What’s your best skill? What’s the most fun? You’re very likely to be best at what you love the most. And then – what’s the least fun? You might, in a musing way, wonder about that. Not turning on the left brained criticism, but just noticing what works best for your wonderful self.

Empowered with this new knowledge you can then choose ways to improve your system, or maybe choose ways to let go of some of the things on your list. Not causing a drastic shift

in your life – simply beginning to notice and allowing change to happen as a natural result. Who cares if you’re not great at baking homemade chocolate chip cookies? Buy the ready-to-bake ones. It doesn’t matter if you lose points in someone else’s opinion. And if it matters to you, then make a change and prac-tice doing better.

A good visual activity to practice is to picture yourself as an athlete – perhaps a tennis player out on the court – with your knees bent, the same way as in most sports. And that’s simply because it is much harder to lose your balance that way. With your knees bent, you’re automatically flexible, can turn, twist, and go in any direction as needed.

And remember to be gentle with yourself and others. These are both great ways to stay balanced and flexible. Be nice to yourself. Congratulate yourself for the tasks you’re working on completing and for what you’re learning. Congratulate yourself when you let go of tasks that no longer give you energy. The choice is always yours.

pastor Brian Eastman is now available for healing sessions using the Life Improvement Internal-Focus technique (LIIFt) process. Eastman reports that LIIFT enables incredibly fast healings. “The process is non-invasive, non-linear, quite simple and free of need for personal revelations. Even people with signif-

icant issues such as abuse or overwhelming anxiety, typically experience a major healing in just the first session,” Eastman says. The process does not interfere with any ongoing counsel-ing, and some say it actually supports their counseling work. 513.853.6180. [email protected].

Occupy Your Lifeby Shiloh Sophia

There is no place else to get to and no other place you are supposed to be. Honest. This is it. Really. Your Life. Your own life. It might not look like you thought it would. It might not feel like you wish it did. But it is yours.

And so the question is...

What is stopping you from occupying it? What story are you telling yourself about why you won't pitch a tent in your heart and demand the truth about why you aren't looking at the places where you are being unjust to yourself. What are you telling yourself about why you won't claim your life as it is... Now? Instead of waiting for something else better, more, brighter, to happen.

What does it mean to occupy oneʼs life? What does it mean to truly LIVE in oneʼs own body. What does it mean to LOVE even when you are hurt? What does it mean to have compassion when you yourself are feeling like a victim?

I want to know...what does it mean to you? To occupy your great life? And Yes you can choose for it to be a great one, even with how it is right now.

What it means to me is that I live like I am living. Instead of living like I am dying. Even on days when it feels like my heart will never drop its oldest scabs and reveal new skin.

What it means to me is to keep finding the YES in every single day. To become present as often as possible and look around. To live the questions. To keep my hands in creation, in paint, in prayer, in poetry. To stand with my sisters and brothers who occupy the world with our chants and tears and truths.

And to no matter what to give my great work.

Whatever my great work is in each day. To live it. To give it. I want to occupy my life as if I belong to it and it belongs to me.

There is nothing else that needs to happen in order to say... I am doing it now. The only thing we have to do is choose and keep on choosing. Though rumor has it, it is easier to choose your life in the company of companions who choose and witness with you. Who can say -- Yes I see you. Yes I hear you. Yes you are doing it.

Finally we remember that this life is good after all and still on our side. Even when the outlook is grim we have some understanding that we are a part of a great unfolding. A mystery. And that no matter how bad it gets our response is still the same...

we have to keep on living and loving and giving and breathing.

And eventually not too far away we find we are willing to admit through surrendering our old sorry identity that we are living it right now. This is it. In all its glory and all its mess and all the grace given and received.

We belong to life. And life belongs to us.

Can I get an AMEN? Amen!

March and April 2012by Diane Samsel

March 2: Mercury in Aries. The mind soars thinking of what’s possible among many diverse options. It’s time to shape a dream into a plan that

fulfills your vision. Imagination inspires actions that pay big dividends down the road.

March 8: Full Moon. This Moon cycle starts with a huge breakthrough in your work with others. You could become an emotional dynamo driving the group towards a higher purpose. Suc-cess is assured when you get the right authority figure on board. March 12: Mercury Retrograde. This won’t be a brutal retro-grade like the last one but it will require you to carefully re-evaluate your motivations. Pressures are building to do something remarkable and revolutionary. You sense the need to bring a dream down to earth. Relax and be inspired as the divine comes through automatically. The time for action comes later.March 14: Fourth Quarter Moon. In any situation there will be a split between those with their heads in the clouds and those with their feet on the ground. Whatever camp you’re in, know the urge to be absolutely right about something could take the day off course. The power of this day lies in a group dynamic operating in harmony. Stand up for yourself, but the important thing is to add your energy to the group without disruption. March 20: Sun in Aries. Hard work pulls this day of extremes together when you take a stand for something in which you passion-ately believe. A leadership role could open up when you demonstrate an ability to succeed without getting aggressive. Show others that you have a workable plan and that you’re motivated. Don’t let doubts cloud your judgment. March 22: New Moon and Vernal Equinox. Let your con-servative side regulate the brilliant, inventive, daring side of your personality in order to give yourself a sense of purpose. Otherwise there could be open warfare between your inner CEO and your inner Mad Scientist. Society needs this break with tradition you’re working on but make sure you have a solid plan of action.March 23: Mercury Retrograde in Pisces. Mercury swings back into Pisces to check out the blueprints. It’s a time to pause and reconsider plans. Do they allow you to dream big enough? Are the goals realistic or are you deluding yourself? A wise person, perhaps a mature female friend, can be of help. March 30: Second Quarter Moon. There could be a conflict between an exciting new direction and the need to slow down and become familiar with the terrain. The potential is for a significant partnership breakthrough in the process. Both sides of the issue have their set of demands and needs. By balancing the equation through compromise great rewards are realized.April 3: Venus in Gemini. Making a relationship permanent could be on your mind today as romance rises up like champagne bubbles. A mature approach prevents marching down the isle with rose colored glasses and other acts of self delusion. Not interested in a romantic relationship? This is a great time to form any partnership that allows for maximum creative expression.

April 4: Mercury Direct. You’ve settled the score on some unfin-ished business, and now is the time to make your big move. People are paying attention to you so get out there with your best new ideas and thoughts. Listen to a wise counsel because an important insight results from this contact. Speak with authority and put your listeners at ease; success will follow. April 6: Full Moon. All Full Moons bring the issue of leadership vs. cooperation to a head. This Full Moon pits the need to break out of the confinement of a current condition against the need to develop strategies to improve current conditions. Both sides have the same goal, each has a different energy to address that goal. One side says “follow me” and the other side says “let's put our heads together and figure this out.” A good CEO will allow both sides to flourish. April 10: Pluto Retrograde. Plans for sudden and dramatic changes that promote new growth arrive at a crossroads. Pause to re-evaluate your attitude. Confidence is high, optimism blossoms among the dead leaves of abandoned dreams. Now’s the time to refuel a vision that empowers your future. April 13: Fourth Quarter Moon and Mars Direct. It’s time for change and the best way to facilitate it is to make things as steady and stable as you can during the process. Everyone will be hard at work completing important tasks and gearing up for even greater things to come. A smooth and orderly environment assures that power struggles won’t disrupt your plans. April 16: Mercury in Aries. A sudden development in partner-ships opens the door for you to make a bold statement. This opportu-nity may help clear an enormous obstacle out of your path. Nothing can stop you in meeting your goals today! April 19: Sun in Taurus. Everyone bands together to achieve an important task. The team seems to be on the same wavelength. Some-thing wonderful can come of the effort. The queen bee is in great humor and providing all the right signals to support the worker bees. April 21: New Moon. The goal of this lunar cycle seems to be centered on keeping things stable and secure in spite of really big and rewarding changes that are brewing. Contrasting with recent trends in cooperation, this is a more conservative and lonely time of drawing inward for reflection. April 29: Second Quarter Moon. Stubbornness could lead to painting yourself into a corner. Once in that corner, you’ll notice that you’re alone. Get out of this pickle by partnering up with someone with a shared sense of purpose. You might notice that all you wanted in the first place is to be the center of attention.

Book ReviewHollister House—The Banyan Tree Awakensby Joani Lacy (2011)

Hollister House—The Banyan Tree Awakens is Joani Lacy’s second novel and follows her first book, Hollister House—Legend of the Banyan Tree published in 2008, in what is to become the Hollister House trilogy. In this much-awaited sequel, Eve Hollister and her family settle into the beautifully restored Victo-rian mansion to celebrate their first Christmas together, confident that the house is no longer haunted. But when Eve and Sippie visit New Orleans that confi-dence is quickly shattered as more of the mysterious Hollister family curse is revealed. By taking the reader on an amazing journey through the romantic French Quarter, colorful carnival season of Mardi Gras and set in the Deep South of Mississippi with all its gothic imagery, the fantastic fantasy world of Hollister House is brought to a higher, spellbinding level, leaving the traveler begging for more. Lacy is currently working on the third book in the trilogy and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Autographed copies of both novels are available at www.robinlacy.com and are available in hard copy, paperback, and e-book format at www.amazon.com or www.IUniverse.com.

CD ReviewConvergence by Lighthawk Mark kenworthy (2011)

Convergence is Lighthawk’s (Mark Kenworthy) eighth CD release and once again em-ploys the use of live “stream of consciousness” performances from the past year. Con-vergence is not your typical relaxation/meditation music. The instrumentation is at first unfamiliar since Lighthawk spends many hours, weeks and even months creating a pal-ette of ethereal wave forms on his keyboards from which to paint a beautiful landscape through recorded music. It is an active meditation and a journey in changing conscious-

ness. The music is a blend of unusual yet pleasant wanderings and effects created with the intention of breaking trances and old thought patterns on a subconscious level that keeps one from realizing their full potential. To receive the full benefit of this healing music it is best listened to in its entirety in a quiet environment or meditative state without outside distractions. In listening one is taken on a journey of the mind and heart as the subtle textures and harmonics create space within the sub-conscious for a healing effect. The experience can be quite relaxing and often leaves one feeling refreshed and clear headed. Lighthawk’s CDs are available through his website, www.lighthawkmusic.com and at his performances. Or write to: Light-hawk Music, 741 Daphne Ct, Cincinnati, OH 45240. Note: Lighthawk will be performing live at Victory of Light on April 21 & 22. (See ad pg 3).

COMPLETE FAMILY DENTAL CARE

Montgomery Dental Medicine is like no dental office you’ve

visited. Dedicated to your total well-being, our staff forms long-term re-lationships with you and your family built on open, honest dialogue and a thorough knowledge of all the factors that impact everyone’s health.

Our approach is successful because it’s a more sensitive process of listen-ing to your thoughts, questions and concerns.

AN INTEGRATED APPROACHTO BETTER HEALTH

Do you wake up exhausted? Are you fatigued during the day even

though you get a “good night’s sleep”? Do you suffer Insomnia and CFS? Do you wake up with a headache? Do you have head, neck or jaw pain?

For 27 years, Dr. Bosma has enjoyed marked success relieving headaches and migraine symptoms, TMJ pain and dysfunction, stiff and painful neck and shoulder muscles, and an ex-tremely successful natural sinus regi-men to ease nasal breathing effort.

Our integrated approach combines multiple preventative medicine dis-ciplines. Since our healthcare profes-sionals have over 60 years of combined experience, we’re able to exceed your expectations and achieve our goal of improving your quality of life.

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTOYOUR BODY

Snoring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In

turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relation-ships.

Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.

TRANSFORM YOUR SMILE

Does your smile make you feel confident and attractive? Or, do

you cringe when you have your photo taken? Have you lived with discol-ored teeth, chips or cracks, or mottled coloring for long enough?

Transform your smile in as few as one or two visits to Montgomery Den-tal Medicine. Find new confidence and take years off your looks!

We’ll repair your older bridgework (cracks, chips and discoloration), and we can close up gaps between teeth. We are committed to making you feel and look your best.

WHY CHOOSE MONTGOMERY DENTAL MEDICINE?
