October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) — a time to increase public knowledge regarding the importance of early detection of breast cancer. One out of every eight women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime; this disease will touch all of our lives in some way or another. The good news is that death rates have slowly decreased since 1990 thanks to treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.

The American Cancer Society will sponsor two local walks this month: the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will be held in Santa Barbara, Saturday, October 8, at Santa Ynez High School and in Orange County, Sunday, October 9, at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. These activities

unite commu-nities, cele-brate those that have battled breast cancer, and empower women to join the fight.

I had a wake up call early on in my life, years before I was ready to be awakened. The genetic threads of cancer weave through the fabric of, not only my DNA, but also the soulful threads that made up my hope, happiness and love; everything that laid the groundwork for whom I would one day become.

My first year as a teenager, I began the cancer journey with my father. During my last year as a teenager, the same journey with my older brother ended. From the age of thirteen to nineteen I watched my family members suffer from the lethal chains of a genetic disease that lead to cancer. The years I began to observe and understand the possibilities of the future, my mind was also blinded by the reality of short-lived lives. Hope and happiness was something I lived without for the next decade. The years I was discovering all the depths of what love was, I also discovered the power love has to overcome horrible suffering. Though I was bathed in tears of sadness, there was always a strong guiding light of love that eventually lit the path of where I would begin my own journey into healing.

Everything that would later define me as a woman was sparked by those first years when I was becoming a woman. Those first years when everything about our mind, our body, and our spirit is rapidly changing and evolving too quickly to process. When innocence of childhood is replaced overnight by the rush of hormones, crushes, fitting into social networks and talk of futures. When the reflection in the mirror becomes more serious and the questions of “who am I” and “what is my purpose” begin to arise like seedlings reaching up to the heavens.

My father passed at age 42 and my brother at 22. We lost both of them too early, mostly due to misdiagnosis of the disease. My twin sister and I then joined the family ritual of colonoscopies and other tests. The doctors lead us to believe that at any moment the disease could strike us as it had with our other young baby brother. Luckily, this was never the case.

There have been two other times in my life when I was fearful that cancer would be my destiny. During my ten years in college, I did not take the best care of myself. I worked everyday and

studied in every free moment. I thought I had time to neglect myself; I was still young enough, and soon, it would be my turn to be nour-ished. The neglect of my health and the emotional stress I was still holding onto without a doubt created my imbalance. I discovered that I had a hormonal condition that could lead to uterine cancer. This devastated me, but I was determined to heal myself. Luckily, I was in the

beginning of acupuncture school and determined to change those statistics.

Eventually, my hormones became balanced through acupunc-ture and herbs. When I became an acupuncturist, I opened a wellness center focused on women’s health and cancer prevention. Every patient’s powerful transition amazed me.

Then, three years ago, I believed something was terribly off in my left breast and underarm — the sensations were not right.

I considered having a mammogram, but didn’t have a lump, so I knew it would be negative. My doctor also tried to talk me out of it as I was “too young” at age 34, and therefore my insurance wouldn’t pay for it. I was encouraged to ignore my concerns because it would be an out-of-pocket expense. However, I was determined to find other options; I was going to be proactive.

I needed to find something that could capture what I was feeling. I eventually discovered thermography to monitor my breast health, which I was so surprised so many people, including myself, hadn’t heard of. The more I learned, the more I believed in hope. A year later, I no longer felt there was an issue. Bringing awareness of breast thermography has become my new passion.

Thermography uses changes in breast tissue temperatures to identify changes in breast tissue. When pre-cancerous cells or cancerous cells form in the breast tissue, changes in blood flow and tissue concentration occur, resulting in temperature changes. The thermographic images will show the change in blood flow, tissue density as it is related to temperature, and heat distribution. Thermography breast cancer screenings are not only radiation and pain free, they can also see physiological changes happening in

breast tissue eight-plus years before those cancer cells have grown to the size that can be detected by mammography or even be felt. With early detection, you can enter a path of healing and wellness instead of sickness care. I view breast thermography as preventive medicine, because you can safely monitor your breast health, and if there is a physiological change, it is discovered at the earliest stage.

It takes years for a tumor to grow and the earliest possible indication of abnormality is needed to allow for the earliest possible treatment and intervention. The faster a malignant tumor grows,the more heat it generates, and thermography looks for these signs as well as other factors indicating a physiological red-flag for the development or existence of cancer. Thermogra-phy is designed to improve chances for detection of fast-growing active tumors in the intervals between mammography screenings or when mammography is not indicated by screening guidelines such as for younger women, denser breast tissue, breast implants and to avoid harmful radiation. It can also guide closer attention to a septic area of the breast that needs particularly close examina-tion such as when an MRI is indicated.

Early detection will save lives. More than 90 percent of women diagnosed with early stage, localized cancer are alive five years later. Yet, according to the American Cancer Society, only 58% of cancers are diagnosed at this stage.

Most people say getting cancer gave them a wake-up call for their purpose in life. I grew up understanding the fragility of life and knowing that part of my own meaning was to give purpose to my brother and father’s lives that were cut short. It is easy to look back on mistakes and supposed wrong paths taken, but I consider these detours to be like a scavenger hunt; a gathering of whatever tools I could thanks to the intuition that I would need them someday. It is so beautiful now to know that every choice I have made has purpose. The accumulation of the lessons learned brought me priceless wisdom and clarity for this new level of life I am living. My path will guide other women on their path of health and healing. I now choose to live at all depths with an elevated consciousness at the roots and branches of my being.

My wellness center is called the Tao of Venus, which means the path or way of the women. We offer the healing tools to address every aspect of the women on each path of her journey. We always teach self-care to help empower women to leave with the tools to live their best life. What is the difference between thermography and mammography?Where mammography looks for structure such as a lump, Thermography looks for the body’s physiological response to cancer cells. These changes can often occur 8-10 years before the cells are large enough to be seen by a mammogram.

Does thermography replace mammograms?No! However, do mammograms replace thermography? The answer to this is also a resounding no; the two tests comple-ment one another. The consensus among health care experts is that no one procedure or method of imaging is solely adequate for breast cancer screening. The false negative and positive rates for mammography are too high for the procedure to be used alone.Thermography can pick up many of the cancers missed by mammography. A positive infrared image is also the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer. It is thermography’s unique ability to monitor the abnormal temperature (physiological) changes produced by

diseased breast tissue that allows for extremely early detection.

When will I get the report back?A week and often in just a few days.

Is it safe if I have breast implants?Thermography is a great screening tool for implants since it can see through the implant with no obstruction. DITI can also pick up on implant leakage due to the inflammation in the area and the resulting fibrosis. Since thermography does not touch the body there is no chance of rupture.

I’ve had breast cancer; what can thermography do for me?Thermography is a great tool to monitor your body’s response to treatment. Whether you had cancer three months ago or 10 years ago, it is a great screening tool to monitor your breast health, all without any pain or radiation during your thermography

screening.

If my mammogram came back normal why should I get a breast thermogram?A positive thermographic change is similar to finding plaque in your artery before you have a stroke or discovering you have very high cholesterol before you have a heart attack. All are warning signs that can give you an opportunity to intervene for health.

It is important to listen to the body and take the measures necessary to keep you healthy.Remember, knowing can remove much stress.

Rich in lignans, compounds that have an antioxidant effect and act as anti-estrogens, flaxseed can play a role in the prevention of estrogen-related cancers,

such as breast cancer. That doesn’t mean that men shouldn’t up their consumption as well; American Cancer Society studies have shown that a diet supplemented with flaxseed slows the growth of benign prostate cells, reducing the risk of prostate cancer. The seeds also contain Omega-3 fatty acids, which discourage colon cancer and heart disease. Consumption of whole flaxseeds is a piece-of-cake if you sprinkle them onto cere-al, on top of salad, or mix into baked goods. If you prefer your seeds ground, avoid the pre-ground flax mixes from the grocery store — fresh-ground flaxseeds have greater health benefits while store-ground seeds have often oxidized and gone rancid.

Though commonly espoused for their deliciousness, low glycemic index, and nutrition-

al value, berries also contain antioxi-dants, the cancer-prevention bingo word. Antioxidants assist in the prevention of cellular damage by fighting free radicals, which affect DNA and lead to cancer. The fruit’s high Ellagic Acid content also helps to inhibit the growth of tumors (notably, black raspberries have more of this compound than any other berry). The medicine isn’t hard to swallow — there are plenty of delicious ways to boost your berry consumption: put blueber-ries in your oatmeal, strawberries in your salad, blend into smoothies, or snack on them on their own. Just keep in mind when stocking up that shop-ping organic is the way to go; you don’t want to counteract the benefit of the antioxidants by consuming pesticides.

In-stead of staying on the defensive lines, it’s time to go on the offense and combat cancer before it arrives on your doorstep. Mother Nature has an abundance of powerful antidotes to disease in her arsenal — particularly when it comes to cancer prevention. There are plenty of delicious, wholesome foods that will not only improve the quality of your meal, but also the quality of your health. Here are six anti-cancer superfoods you should be incorporating into your diet.

Green Tea

Red WineWhile the key ingredient to red wine’s cancer prevention is grape skin, which you could ostensibly ingest by itself, the benefits extend to red wine. Polyphenols, such as catechins and resveratrol, inhibit cell proliferation and

are thought to have anti-cancer properties — like all antioxidants, they help to counteract harmful free radicals. The International Journal of Cancer pub-lished a study showing that a glass of red wine a day can cut a male’s risk of prostate cancer in half as well as lower incidence of more aggressive forms of the disease. While most don’t need an excuse to enjoy a good glass of wine, the health benefits are linked to the ingredients, not the alcohol, so doctors recom-mend moderate consumption of one glass a day.

Heralded in some circles as a miracle superfood, green tea contains a myriad of special ingredients. A high amount of the antioxidant catechin helps to fight cancer in a variety of ways, namely the ability to shrink tumors and slow tumor cell growth. Elevated levels of a special chemical called EGCG stymies

tumor growth as well as aids cells in avoiding damage and premature aging. With plenty of varieties and blends of green tea to choose from, there are no excuses not to make a cup a part of your daily routine. If you’re a coffee drinker, try substituting a cup a day with the green stuff — and if you already drink black tea the switch should be easy. Supposing the flavor isn’t your “cup of tea”, you can always doctor it with ginger, lemon or honey.

This veggie family — which includes cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli — contains sulforaphane, a compound that has antican-cer, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial assets. Cruciferous vegeta-

bles are cited as a promising breast cancer protective agent as well as linked with lowered tumor risks in the uterus, lung, colon, liver, cervix and prostate. If the thought of steamed cabbage turns your stomach, opt for some of the other veggies in this plant family; bok choy, kale, and brussel sprouts are cruciferous too. There are countless ways to turn these nutritional powerhouses into delicious dinner. Try roasting cauliflower, shaving the brussel sprouts with pecorino into a salad or opt for a lighter-dressed coleslaw.

Spicy is healthy; capsaicin, the component of chili peppers that give them their zing, has surfaced as an anti-cancer hero. The compound might render carcinogenic nitro-

samines harmless — meaning a little extra spice could potentially prevent cancer. A study from Nottingham University, lead by Dr. Timothy Bates, found that capsaicin got rid of cancer cells. In The Natural News, Bates explains that this may be key in explaining why people who traditionally eat a spicy diet, such as those living in Mexico and India, tend to have lower incidences of many cancers. While adding more hot sauce to your meal is an easy way to up your intake, have fun exploring recipes from other cultures that utilize hot peppers.

Impossible situations can become possible miracles.

Our body loves us, but it needs to know we love our lives in order for it to do all it can to help us survive. The change in body energy activat-ed by the love alters our internal chemistry and makes a difference. In many cases, this kind of miracle is damn hard work. But when you are willing to do the work, and

live in your heart, magic can happen.

Fear and love play a major role in all our lives. Fear is meant to protect us from danger, not make us ill. Fear can get you to run faster and escape a rabid animal, but if you live in fear of everything and everyone, it will intensify stress and negatively affect your ability to heal. Love and laughter are what enhance healing, reduce stress, and increase our ability to heal. So let your heart make up your mind.

It is important to follow your faith and make choices based upon what you have faith in. That can include yourself, your God, your doctor, your treatments, and more. It’s not just doing what others prescribe for you, because when you do that, you give up your power. Every treatment has its side effects, but if you choose a treat-ment out of faith, the side effects are diminished and the treatment more beneficial. What the mind believes has a very powerful effect on the body.

I have seen innumerable cases of “miracle healings” in my life and practice. Here is one story that inspired me.

Iwas a two-time breast cancer survivor. Each time, a rather unusual physician named Dr. Bernie Siegel became center stage in my world. I listened to his tapes before, during, and after surgeries, and his words held me through chemo. He believed in miracles — and so did I. Due to serious side effects, I stopped chemo prematurely, refused radiation, and yet survived — for fourteen years.

To work with the healer I thought could help save my life, my husband and I abruptly left our longtime home and our friends and family in Massachusetts, knowing we would not return. When I arrived in Denver last June, I wondered if I would see the month’s end. I came on faith — faith in the energy and spiritual cancer treatment I had chosen, faith in God and a conviction that now was simply not my time to leave. I was having an advanced, aggressive metastatic breast cancer recurrence. And I felt that somehow I would survive it.

“It’s never too late,” my healer had pronounced. I believed her. And so the journey began.

The chemo years before had created its own legacy of health problems, and I had developed severe chemical intolerances little understood by the medical profession. In recent years I largely avoided traditional medical care. Now, unable to undergo surgical anesthesia or chemo, I had no choice but to find a completely alternative way. Bernie’s enlightened teachings laid the foundation and gave me the courage to do so.

An energy and spiritual healer in Denver was the practitioner I trusted...a worker of miracles.

On my first day of “treatment,” I was directed to walk around the Denver Statehouse three times clockwise. This of course seemed ridiculous, and I was in significant pain from the then-advanced cancer. “You can do it,” we were cheerfully told. “You’ll understand later.”

So I did, limping, sweating, hanging onto Jim’s arm, and together we rejoiced in a feeble “I can.” Great, I thought, but how is this going to save me?

And then the first miracle happened: I was given time to find out.

Over the next weeks and months, my healer delivered powerful healing energy to my body in daily treatments. Together we uncovered lifetimes (yes, lifetimes) of trauma, negative beliefs, and emotions.

These were some of my (unconscious) beliefs:It’s too hard. I can’t.I don’t deserve to heal.Maybe God doesn’t love me.My default emotional states all evolved from fear.

“This is a big project,” my healer pronounced.When not in treatments, I made prescribed dietary changes,

consumed endless amounts of wheatgrass and Essiac, took handfuls of supplements, received Chinese acupuncture, and most important, was taught kundalini yoga. As the yoga practice deepened, what I had been promised came true: it was sustenance to the body and soul, life-giving as air itself.

Yet, like a bad recurring dream, “I can’t” still whispered from the wings.

There was that question of God. Where was (s)he? Why had this happened to me again? Did God love me — or just everyone else, more deserving than I? I had some big repairs to make in my thinking. Despite a lifetime of spiritual seeking, despite my “belief ” in miracles, the surprising truth was I had lost my faith as a child.

“God was there,” I was reminded. “It was you who left.” I realized I had begun to surrender to partnership with God

from the time I’d agreed to circle the Denver Statehouse three times when we first arrived. We tackled fear and its related negative emotions. How can fear coexist with God inside? I began to be aware of its pervasiveness in my life. Was there another way to be in the world? While these defensive, vigilant ways of relating to life were effective for childhood survival, they served no purpose now. In fact, they fed the cancer. When I was actually able to shift myself into happier internal places — love, enthusiasm, compas-sion, detachment, peacefulness, tolerance, patience, surrender — in spite of how my body felt, daily life, and my body, were better.

“Focus always on the light and you will heal. The body will follow the mind.”

As I plowed through mental, emotional, and spiritual layers, my once-battered heart began to open. I felt light breathed into me and pain receding. The cancer tightness in my chest released.

I sent gratitude to every cell. Gratitude for miracles. Gratitude for my amazing, loving husband and daughter, and for their unquestioning support of my chosen unconventional healing path. Gratitude for this precious life.

But fear still lurked, and anger ran deeper than I thought. I needed to claim my innate empowerment, release an unconscious victim program. Finally, I understood at the deepest levels that childhood abuse and neglect necessitate forgiveness, acceptance, and letting go. Then nothing — including cancer — can have power over us.

Repeatedly I returned to surrender. The opposite of giving up, surrender to God’s light and grace is fundamental to the soul’s healing. Our precious little will and ego must bow to the Infinite! It seems so simple, so obvious, and yet so unattainable.

And then, one day, it isn’t.

My will is thy will. The release in my body is real. The

cancer cells are dying.Just over one year from the day we

landed in Denver, I am looking out the window of our little rented house, marveling at the majestic front range, and contemplating all that has happened.

I have learned that cancer is a bully from our past. Like all dis-ease, it begins in the mind, emotions, and spirit, and appears later, often many years later, in the body. Yes, we can treat it with surgery, drugs, and other interventions to prolong life, but the soul longs for more.

For women, Mother Earth’s increasing distress is a deep wounding to our divine feminine nature, whether we are aware of it or not. Our breasts, symbols of mother-hood and comfort, are in pain. I under-stand now that allowing my own or the world’s hurt to enter my body serves no one.

There are many gifts. This astonishing soul work has strengthened my faith in miracles and has created deep cellular healing. I am physically stronger and healthier than I’ve been in years, more conscious, loving, tolerant, peaceful...happy. Another miracle: The chemical sensitivities are nearly nonexistent. For the first time in my life I feel whole. It took three times to get here, and I am a slow learner, but I’m healing. If it is meant to be, I will be completely well.

The truth is that my story can be anyone’s. When the soul is determined to heal, the body can follow, and what we call miracles can happen. As Bernie first taught me, our true nature is wholeness, love, and happiness — and is available to us all.

and not for the roles they play in them. I’ve known women who wanted to live because they were “mothers” and died when the kids left home. Do not live a role. If you introduce yourself to God by saying, “I am a single mom,” God says, “Come back when you know who you are.” You need to know you are an authentic human being made of the divine stuff and a child of God.

When you achieve that state, the voice will speak to you and guide you. I hear inner voices, and when I do I follow their advice and the directions they give me. The result has been very gratifying and healing. We are all capable of hearing the voice if we calm our minds and listen, or use repetitive exercise, meditation, or yoga to help us be receptive.

I believe God communicates with us. My concept of God is intelligent, conscious, loving energy. Why those words? Because creation, as astronomers and quantum physicists will tell you, couldn’t have been an accident. If we just move our planet a few miles, we would not survive due to temperature changes.

Miracles are our potential, and I hope minds open to this and we explore the reality of these events so they can become a part of our lives, as all miracles should be. Remember to believe in your own potential and experience, and do not close your mind to what you cannot explain.

Become a good one: a divine, authentic creation that you design and create and not a role imposed

upon you by others.
